    Mills should have been off the case the moment they found that photo of him... it was a clear indicator that he might be a potential target. He & his wife should've packed up and left town for a few weeks, or at least until the case was solved.

      Really immersed you into the disturbing persona that was John Doe. Excellent mise-en-scene. The minute they stepped into the apartment, they were in John Doe's head

      Yeah it didn’t feel cheap at all. It was creepy that everything was obviously used for ill intent yet it was all meticulously arranged and organized.

    I honestly think David Fincher can easily direct horror films if he wanted to. This and the gluttony scene felt creepy as hell

      ​@Jonathan Birch Yeah, and his plan for the film was sabotaged at every turn by the studio. They'd already gone through two directors and something like four writers, they brought Fincher on and threw money at him and said "turn this sinking ship into something we can put on screen, for the love of god."

    I love the musical ambience from 0:41 onward -- as if the detectives were walking through unhallowed ground. John Doe's apartment is a place reeking with obsession and misery.

    In the first third of the film, both policemen investigate separately. Mills inspects some photos, while Sommerset reads some books. At the end of the second third of the film, both policemen do the exact same thing in Doe's apartment.

    Mills as a detective should have realized and remembered every interaction he had with the photographer, including the "M-I-L-L-S, f*ck off!" the second he saw his pict.
    He literally gave his death sentence to John Doe

    I always remember certain films where people go into the homes of crazy people. There's this one Se7en, and some others I recall being deplorable are the trailer park home in Zodiac, the room for the killer in 8mm, the house for David Ferry in JFK, and then of course Buffalo Bill's basement...

    You’d think after seeing photos of himself developing in the bathtub Mills would have taken precautions and perhaps moved his wife somewhere safe as the killer was clearly interested in him 🤷🏻‍♂️

      Well his character is brash and kinda stupid, besides he thought those photos were from the random journalist that he shooed out of the stairwell. So Im assuming he believed that the journo was the killer, not that he was being stalked. I could be wrong but those photos looked exactly like the time he yelled at that guy in the stairwell. Or at least the first picture was anyway.

    This movie came out in 1995. The same year as The Usual Suspects. Another thrilling crime drama. And in both movies, Kevin Spacey plays a villain who wins.

    I just realized we see the aftermath of many brutal murders in this movie but we never once SEE the killer show even a HINT of aggression besides running and shooting behind him. Can you even imagine Kevin committing these ultra violent crimes? 😂
