Excellent example of working through the process and problm solving! Its awesome to see real detailers work their craft and SAFELY deliver amazing results without compromising the clear coat! Simply amazing! Thanks Chelsea!
Your experience with this vehicle teaches volumes on the need to try different combos of compounds and polish. Only a thoughtful, professional Detailer would labor to this extent to give her customers great satisfaction. Couldn’t agree more about not chasing perfection.
Dealing with soft clear is always a pain in the butt. Ive found that it's not so much with the combo's we use but with the machines we use. Switching between a 15mm down to a 12mm in super soft paint has performed the best for me. I hope this helps a bit Chelsea as you always make great content. It was nice the paint thickness was averaging 5mils.
It was frustrating for me too on a white chevy 2013 truck. Had to cut very heavy to make a difference with the scratches and swirls, and polishing haze away was tough. Paint was very hard. Of course I'm learning not to chase perfection, but I'm not wired that way. I'm getting better! Lol. The black truck looks extremely nice. Thanks for walking thru the process with us. Helpful.
I have worked on dozens of paint finishes like this, I was cringing when you were explaining this because I could see It lol. Excellent tutorial on the video Chelsea. 👍🇨🇦
I love this video. To see real results in real time while troubleshooting is something you don't see often. It's refreshing for a warrior like me to see not every process is iron clad, sometimes you have to figure out the process. Thanks for sharing!
😲 Holy Crap!! What a difference! It was SO uneven, I wondered how it was going to blend in. GREAT WORK! I would have done a small inconspicuous spot if I was him. Thank goodness for YOU, he DID know to stop & get expert advice. Again, WELL DONE!🙌
Very informative. I love your style, how you talk to us like we're there with you and not at us, versus the charade some other channels do. Real life, real results. Good work and thanks for the knowledge.
In my opinion this is what makes a real detailer paint correction, and you do some of the best out there when it comes to youtube. Plus you talk sense and break it down to understand it not many other American channel's do that.
I saw just a portion of the video title and I thought you tried doing a detail job hammered. Ha. And like they say, black isn’t a color, it’s a full time job. You were so persistent on getting the marring removed. Well done.
Awesome job on the truck👍. Thank you for taking the time to explain all your thought process and combinations. It can be very frustrating at times and to be filming and documenting it is even more work. Keep up the great work😀
You got a challenge, and you solved it well! I do still keep my first Pony..., no my first DA. It has moderate 8mm throw. On problem-paint that machine could sometimes be a part of the problem-solving. Hope the owner was happy with the transformation you did on his dream car :)
Nice video! I wonder how Rupes Uno pure would have worked with a white pad on this. I got some for Christmas and I was reading the bottle and it says it’s good for finishing soft haze prone paint.
Hey Chelsea! I know we were talking about soft paints last time and black GM , having to two step , check out shine supply finish plus! It was amazing and made perfect for GM paints !
One product (1st step) that would cut away most issues on such soft clearcoat with minimal marring, is Meguiars Ultimate Compound with LC purple foam on a rotary. Have tested it many times. If using a rotary, the 2nd step is Sonax’s Green pad + Sonax Perfect Finish. This would render it close to perfect. 3rd step: DA + white pad + Perfect Finish. DONE!😁 Final layer: Since its so soft, buffing off certain coatings could even marr such an abnormal clearcoat. Hence, we spray on TAC System’s watery MOONLIGHT renowned for its ease of buffing off, durability and gloss…and immediately wipe it off. In my country, such soft clearcoats are very common, and its almost 60% of the work that we do on a daily basis. And the above 3 step method has produced superb results on darker colours with no future complaints from knowledgeable car owners who love to inspect their paintwork up close (detailing enthusiasts, car club members etc).
Glad to see the explanations as you work through the process. I tend to struggle getting that final polish, or removing the haze. I try to catch it as I complete each panel, but tend to fiind extremely light marring and that weird haze when I do a final walk around before I apply my paint sealant. That micromarring haze gets me all the time.
Nice Job, and great info! Man, sometimes paint can be tricky. I had a similar situation years ago where I kept getting a minute haze after polishing. After days of trial and error and head scratching a fellow detailer suggested I try 3M Perfect itEX Ultra-Fine Machine Polish. With a black finishing pad, 1-2 small drops of product and one pass over the panel on a low speed setting, followed by blowing out the pad and going back with the residue still on the panel for one more pass on the lowest speed setting, achieved perfect clarity. Since then I've used the same process on the gloss black pillar trim and other soft paints with fantastic results. Just thought I'd pass along something I learned that might help in the future. Keep up the amazing work!
I watched the other video the other day. Thinking the owner has half flattened the paint for you to bring it back to a high gloss. I would have went straight to the foam pads. I have never needed or used a wool pad to buff any paint in my 15yrs. Also at 10mins you can see the 1/3 cuts you did sectioning off the front door. Remember the throw of your orbits introduce unwanted buff marks. I've seem 8mm finishng, 12mm light cut, 15mm cutting, If your buffer is 21mm throw it in the bin an just use a rotary. Just safer and quicker. Problem solving can be more time consuming than the correction itself. Keep up with the great video's
I knew foam wouldnt touch the rids but youre right. Hind sight I should have used a smaller throw and I'll remember that for next time. I wanted to get done faster so kept using the 21mm but probably made more work for myself in the long run sticking with it. Thanks for sharing and watching!
Your dedication to your craft is admirable, and really speaks to both your character and standards of quality that you hold yourself to. Regarding getting paint absolutely “perfect,” sometimes preservation is more important than perfection, particularly on a daily driver that the owner plans on keeping for a while. Very informative video - do you have/use any other machines besides the Porter Cable 7424 XP?
Ah. My bad. Which machine(s) were you using for this particular detail? Also, do you still use your 3401, and under what circumstances would you reach for it as opposed to something else? I have both a 3401 and a GG6 but I hardly use the 3401.
@@Legendsneverdie877 I was using my 21mm long throw but should have used something less aggressive like gg6 and maybe that would have helped me finish down even more. I struggle with the 3401 because of the rotation and sometimes just want something more predictable and comfortable. But I should use it more. Maybe soon I'll break it out and see if my thoughts on it have changed...
Dud a Volvo xc60 was the same show! Different cast members. Ended up with either using H9 on blue pad and M302 and Koch purple pad or Griots correcting cream on yellow the the same koch on their purple pad/perfecting cream on black LC pad but was almost out of it. You just never know what’s going to do the trick. I personally think its going to get worse with all this soft garbage.
You had your work cut out for you on that one for sure, but you did a fantastic job! Thanks for taking us along on the journey of your thought process - I learned a ton from that! Recently picked up a DA polisher, now I just need to bite the bullet, get a test panel, and put all the things I've learned into practice. Quick question - you mentioned using a paint depth gauge to test the paint. What's a good, reasonably priced unit that would serve someone well who's not doing a ton of paint enhancements/corrections but would still like to get accurate results?
@@attention2detailswchelsea Thanks! I knew you likely had a video on it, but I was too lazy to search for it 😊 One other quick question - how does the Rules yellow pad compare to the Lake Country orange pad? Thanks, Chelsea! Always appreciate your time and knowledge.
Smidge more aggressive on correction but on medium/harder paints finishes down really well. I normally use either the yellow rupes foam or orange foam pads for my paint enhancements
I have a ‘16 F150 that us also black. My truck ends up looking similar. I don’t think it’s so much the paint is difficult, as it is the colour. They call it Shadow Black, and its not as deep and dark as your typical Black like Ebony Black. I’ve owned other black Ford’s at the same time as this truck, and the Shadow Black is more dull, leaning towards a more gray hue. Not sure how to explain it. It is not as deep a black as most people would expect with black paint. It is most noticeable against other black cars. I don’t think I would buy a vehicle with this colour again tbh.
This type of detailing job could land many competent detailers into trouble due to under-pricing. General rule of thumb for such difficult to deal with clearcoats, you’ll need 3 rounds of machine work to avoid any reasonable complaints from eagle-eyed customers. The big question often unmentioned in videos…how much would the car owner be willing to pay? If you eradicate the hazing caused by the owner, he might question you on the deeper (removable scratches) which u did not remove. Lots of time needed to perform testing with a confusing array of pads and polishes…time is $$$$. If you did the correct thing by compounding to remove all removable deeper scratches but left behind holograms etc due to your inability to go for a proper 3-step or even 4 step machine work, he might spot it LATER and call you up after a few car washes while having a beer and admiring the car under indoor lights. Trouble will come. For my own pro detailing work on such clearcoats, I’d charge for a 3 step machine work and no less. IMO, your DA + wool was the logical first step. Keep up the great work!👍👍🙏🏻👏 Love your videos! SUBSCRIBED!
