A classy woman who as a teenager reached out to young girls and told them, with this song, that they were their own person. You never heard a negative comment from her or about her. Just a beloved teen icon. You will be missed but always loved and remembered. RIP Lesley. So sad to know you left us.

Tango Eliott Yes, she was en icon! we- were aduceted to be a person- to bee an no-person at all, just doing what our parents wanted to us to be whithout questions! She was the first who said, YOU ARE A PERSON, AND IT`S IMPORTANT WHAT YOU THINK/WILL! i´M GREATFULL TO HER FOR EVER! I`m alone now, but I´m proud of there are no men who decides what do I do!

So true I have an old Life magazine article that shows Leslie supporting Bobby Kennedy and it was Paul Newman on the cover who supported McCarthy -- great article she was truly a classy lade and not afraid to speak her mind. Always polite.

I’m here cause this was my favorite song back in 1963/1964....I always felt this way. Eventually got married, didn’t last, raised my beautiful little girls alone, worked almost all of my adult life, helped raise all my grandkids...never remarried..never had the time or the energy to be in any relationship. Too much drama...too stressful...in my case, anyway. So now I’m 72 years old....still living on my own...still kind of feeling the exact same way I did when I was 15/16/17 yrs old, I think this song was written just for me. It’s me. I’m not young anymore, still in fairly good health, grandkids are all grown up, and I feel kind of free. Still remember (when I was young) feeling as if this was the perfect song for me. I did enjoy being young...and I’m much much much older now. And I still love this song. And I still feel the same way I felt back in 1964 when I felt as if I was being suffocated ....all because a nice guy liked me too much. I love my family. I’m not snooty...never was. I just need my own space and finally realized I’m happier living on my own . I did adopt two old cats from the spca a few years back. They’re still with me. No drama, no stress....I just play and cuddle with them when I want to. This is my life. And the cats don’t own me either. 😏😁

Just4Gamers Tube It can most definitely apply to both sexes! I cannot get enough of 50s/60s music, either. I'm 29 and jam out to the classics, only. Mostly. I cannot stand the crap they play on the radio nowadays, not what I would call music!

Please watch & listen to the angel of Norway the cute & fantastic, amazing, good-looking Angelina Jordan. You will be dreaming for the beauty of her voice & singing like flying to the moon. Better listen at night....she will put you to sleep for the beauty of her singing & voice.

I think leslys version is much better than that grace one, because you can actually hear the truth in her words. back in her day's women didn't have even half of the possibilities they do now, sad to hear that most of the young ppl prefer graces version because their ears are not used to hear someone who can actually sing without electronics and music that ppl actually had to play and not on the computer.

This is wonderfully produced by Quincy Jones, employing that Phil Specter ‘wall of sound’. I also enjoy the updated version that also included the ‘wall of sound’ along with a rap-reply from the guy that’s the subject of this song. This song holds its own nearly 60 years after it was first released: th-cam.com/video/8SeRU_ZPDkE/w-d-xo.html
For those who prefer the song without the guy’s rap-reply: th-cam.com/video/rnjdCJoDji0/w-d-xo.html

Ms. Gore was born Lesley Sue Goldstein on May 2, 1946, in Brooklyn. She grew up in Tenafly, N.J., eager to become a singer. She had just turned 16, a junior in high school, when her vocal coach had her make some piano-and-voice recordings. Those demos, with a youthful brightness in her voice, reached the producer Quincy Jones, who was then an A&R man at Mercury Records. He became her producer and mentor

Rest in peace sweet, Lesley :( I was minding my own biz and I heard your voice coming out of the TV from one of the ads and I insta fell in love with it. You spoke to me and I heard you and I followed you all the way here and when I learned such an amazing artist, a true diamond is not in my world anymore, someone so amazing that I have missed my whole life all the while she was living with me in the same world at the same time. I feel empty and sad. The world is an emptier place without you. I do feel the bond between us. Even though I just found out about you and have been listening to your voice a few hundred times I do miss you and I like a silly little kid want you back. You did make me cry like a baby at 6 AM. You are the line in the sand for my generation. Those of us who were born in the 80s'. In the middle of an Epic generation and whatever this is we live today. No respect, no art, and certainly no true passion. It is just about paper. I do wish you took me with you when you all left... in another universe, in another life I know my heart is yours :(((
May you rest in peace, my dearest Lesley.
Thank you Dave for this ... I don't even know what to call it. So beautiful.

+Carl Hardin I totally get your sentiment, the 50s can often seem very romantic in retrospect. But, to be fair, it was an awful time to be any ethnicity, other than white, any sexuality other than hetero, or a female that wanted a career outside of the home. It was also right off the back of WW2 so post-traumatic stress and fear of nuclear annihilation abounded. Not quite as beautiful and innocent as it seems.

+eleskimo i know what it was like . I know the negative and the positive. My comment was basically based on the people's lifestyle. How the women were treated outside, the politeness, the gloves and that elegant style in general... I loved every single detail but i know there was a huge wave of rasism and the KKK but not all white were like that .. So i just stand here, in almost 2016 wondering what would my life be like back then..

Much like Helen Reddy with “I am Woman”... this Reddy song got me through many hard times as a divorced ex-abused women raising two teenagers. I thanked God for Helen’s words... ❤️👍

I love the message I get when I hear this song concerning how she expressed the need absolute need for people and the nurses aide especially women to make it clear that they have this one life they own it it's theirs to live and fulfill on their own terms. To be the champion of your own life and write your own story that won't allow you to be the victim. Self-awareness and empowerment

this was pivotal for young women of this time. On the par with "I am Woman (hear me roar). Sounds corny, but at the time, it was powerful.

This song is waaaaaay ahead of I Am Woman. By the time 'Woman' came out the movement had started. This was like Columbus coming across the Atlantic and "Woman' is the Pilgrims following later

OK :) First Wife'Club brought me there about 10 years ago. Grace version - cover i have to say, something else, but at least that much strong (special Grace' voice) as it was also in the middle of age 60s. And it was much more meaningful those time. So i am really glad the Grace' generation is here and listen the original song. I have to admit when i heard Grace' cover firs after knew that its a cover, i sad wow, its powerful, full of passion and her voice is more powerful. Different ages, different feelings . And the covers sometimes came so far and good to know the history of music.
