The Peppermint Rainbows hit songs were very big in the spring of 1969, their songs were great and I was a Freshman living in Elwood, New Jersey, attended Oakcrest High School in Mays Landing, New Jersey. It was my final months of living in New Jersey. June 21,1969 I had moved to Newark,Delaware. The late 1960’s music and the music of the 1970’s was great.
I was a freshman in h.s. September of that year I went into my sophomore year at Northeast Catholic h.s. in Philly. what a great year '69 was! Partied my ass off that summer with the crowd at Simpson plgd in Northeast Philly.
It came closer to hitting the Top 40 on Cash Box (#50) and in Canada (#47), and it did reach the Top 40 on both the Canadian (#24) and U.S. (#21) Easy Listening charts.
Lead singer is as lovely as can be----a perfect '60s beauty. The other girl is cute and appealing, too. I l also covet the dude's jade or turquoise Telecaster-style guitar. That's a really cool-looking instrument.

What's not to love. Two cute girls who could really sing especially Bonnie. The group did great harmony and actually played their own musical instruments.
I was born July 16th, 1996! I really love the song Staying after Sunday! As a lead vocalist, we do 60s, thru 2024! Plus, there are a few originals! I would ( I would like, I think, a label!) @@bonniephipps2026 What a total JOY to see you, Bonnie, and know folks from this marvelous group are still alive and kicking! I LOVE your sound and songs quite a bit!!

Second single from the "Will You Be Staying After Sunday" LP (1969). Got to #53 on the Hot 100. The title track hit #32 earlier in '69 and #4 at influential KHJ/Los Angeles. Produced by Paul Leka (Lemon Pipers); straight outta Baltimore.
I uploaded this video since the only other one available on the internet is "Will You Be Staying After Sunday." Thought Peppermint Rainbow fans might like a different look.
@@Sargebri I worked in the Federal government back in the 80s with a guy who grew up in Baltimore. Bob Brady (of Bob Brady and the Concords) was his childhood friend and next door neighbor.
Yep, lip-synching. But, an interesting twist at the end of "Sunday." They quickly turned down the studio sound at one point, cutting to our two hosts for a chorus of "You Made Me So Very Happy," with PR providing obvious live harmonies! Very cool!
They had a awesome sound, the disco era kind of took alot of really good groups out. Much like Rap did to Disco. I miss this kind of music with harmonies and folks that could sing and actually play their own music.
This great group's demise had nothing to do with disco. The Peppermint Rainbow broke up in 1970. 1975 and 1977 were the years disco's popularity took off and took off moreso. Sunshine pop like this, and disco, are two of my favorite types of music.
@@jerrynash8920 I see. I don't think they were popular enough in the 1960s for us to be able to remember them at our ages back then. (I was only 7.) I didn't hear about them until about 10 years ago.
It's such a shame the cheesy hosts cut in at the end. Even though the group was lip-synching, it would have been better to let them finish the song. Lead singer's voice is clear as a bell (heavy influence of Cass Elliot, who helped discover them).
I was barely a teenager when this group came out . Of course this young lady had an excellent voice but my gosh she is beautiful as were a lot of women of that era. They wore makeup that accentuated their natural beauty which made their sex appeal warm and wholesome not vulgar and aggressive ! Whether it was Gayle McCormick of Smith or this lead Singer Bonnie Lambdin or PR's keyboardist Pat Lambdin, I would have loved to have gotten my first kiss from one of them.
According to a 2019 interview with a Baltimore newspaper reporter I found online, Bonnie Lamdin Phipps mentioned that she is retired from being CEO of St. Agnes HealthCare in Baltimore and now does consulting work in the healthcare industry. Her sister Patricia Lamdin Brown is an attorney assigned as a Magistrate in the Baltimore Juvenile Courts. Patricia might be retired by now since Lawyer.com indicates she is not active.
Note--despite the song's wholesomeness, the singer is sleeping with her boyfriend, according to the lyrics. It was the late Sixties; times had changed.
I am a recent new-comer to the descriptive term, Sunshine Pop. Was/is that considered to be a (sort of) subdivision of, Bubblegum? And, which term was used first -- if you happen to know?

These two songs personify the vibe of 1969 for me. They just capture the feel of that year, which appealed for love and peace.

"Don't Wake Me Up" should have been a bigger hit with it's soaring harmonies. I had completely forgotten about this group.

Yes, "Don't Wake Me Up" should have easily been a top 10 hit.
I think that they were confused with Spanky and Our Gang and this hindered them.
They remind me of Spanky & Our Gang and Mamas & Papas. The lead singer sounds like Dusty Springfield.
Bonnie looked like Bobbie Gentry.
Great vocals, harmony and band.
