    Despite what some folks have claimed to have heard on The Colour and the Shape, there actually weren’t any drum samples on the album at all! What are some other rumours that you've heard about famous albums!?

      I used to pink noise for EQ ,,, I also just turn up everything n sweep a frequency n when it squeals like a Pig turn it back two numbers below that...
      it sets the house for random EQ from walls n People... it Also sets Mic's with monitors so They don't Feed back...

      Well, there are people claiming that some of the Beatles' music and also album cover artwork contains hidden messages about Paul McCartney actually having died and that he subsequently was replaced by a look-alike, in the mid 60's :-))

      I love Foo Fighters! My biggest pet peeve is the amount of people who stated how good Wasting Light sounds ONLY because it was tracked all analog. I really respect that and I think it leads to amazing performances, certain creative limitations etc. But at the end of the day it was all mastered and listened to digitally. No Different than basically every AC/DC album (and many many more) who TRACK through tape (A800 at warehouse studio) before going to A/D...and then generally mixed again hybrid.

    i always considered this a perfect sounding record. its so interesting to me that Dave understood how important it was to stay away from compression, instead, pushing these tech wizards for other solutions like slamming the tape and molting the parallel channels. made it all even more dynamic and interesting. So inspiring. What a visionary he is.

    • @TheChadPad
      @TheChadPad 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I bet it's because, as a drummer, Dave really would have loved to hear the full drum sound as much as possible, and that's the same way I feel about guitar. Cut out everything from the bass and drums to make room so I can hear the full sound of the guitar. I'm not an engineer, so I don't really know how that works, but as a musician, his attitude about the drums makes a lot of sense to me. I'll be the same stubborn guy in the studio ;)

    • @billyhughes9776
      @billyhughes9776 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@TheChadPad If recorded properly dominate guitar frequencies (in a rock context) shouldn't compete too much with drums and bass. EQ can correct if necessary, but, compression is a bit different when applied to certain instruments. So, that's why it surprised me a bit. The record sounds amazing, so in the end it doesn't matter.

    • @nickwallette6201
      @nickwallette6201 5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Partly because guys like this take a .. perhaps questionable demand and apply the letter of the law, if not the spirit. Hitting the tape hard... that's not technically "using a compressor", is it? EQs to emphasize or subdue transients - that's not compression either. If I hire an intern to play the tape back at 1/5 speed and ride the fader to create a new volume envelope, that's not a compressor.
      As they said in the end of the video - it's all about learning how to say "sure, NP!" and then do whatever you need to do to make it work.

    According to multiple articles I've read about the creation of the Use Your Illusion albums by Guns 'N Roses in '91, they had to mix the album in Skip Sailor because November Rain was a 86 channel multi tape recording and Skip Sailor had the biggest console in LA during that time. Strapping a total of 4 tape machines together and spending weeks trying to sync them. Insane...

    We started the conversation with “I didn’t use compression” to a 4:1 on the bus compression. The whole thing is on tape so there is compression. Then he slammed the The 2 track tape. So there was plenty of compression happening. You couldn’t get away with that in 2019 with Pro Tools. Also, 1997 there was automation especially on a 80 channel SSL.

    Wicked; between Bradley, Chris and yourself, I feel I was there at these sessions. One question; 'Molt, moult?', did I hear the word correctly? Correct me if I'm wrong, I took it's meaning to be; take an aux off a track, maybe out of one console into another, tweak the schnizzle out of it and push it back in along side the original; akin to parallel compression but in this case with EQ, gating etc. instead of comp; is that the idea?

    • @urltom
      @urltom 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Bring MeSunshine He is saying "Mult" - A physical place on a patch bay with multiple patch points. He could patch from the Neve into a "mult" and come out to two or more separate channel strips on the board with very different EQs to bring into the mix more or less. Cheers!

      Mult. Just a patch point to split the signal to two outputs

    • @Producelikeapro
      @Producelikeapro  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes! Mult = Multiple! Meaning you can take one output and multiply it through the patch bay so it goes through multiple pieces of equipment and then often summed back to one input!

    Thanks Warren and Chris. I have a question for Chris regarding Drum panning. How far apart did you pan the overheads in general? All the way left and right or somewhere in between? Thanks

      I would really like to hear some thoughts on this as well. There's so much bleed between two overheads it feels like you can get away with harder panning than with other instances of panning two tracks left and right.

    Hey Warren! Love these videos! (Well, all of your videos, really)
    Do you think you could get Kevin Shirley to talk about his work with Iron Maiden? (Brave New World in particular)
    Cheers, Warren! Keep up the good work!
