Customers need to think twice before buying the Whirlpool microwave- wmh53521hz-5. When the light won’t shut off the only way to fix it is to buy a new motherboard, and they range in price from $156 to over $300 online plus tax and shipping. Also $150 for service call to install it. And it’s an inherent problem in this Whirlpool model. You can buy a new microwave for $450 or pay that much for repairs or buy an LED stick up under cabinet lights for $12 to $18 as a alternative solution.

Thanks so much. Great video. I watched it yesterday, ordered the parts through your link from Amazon ($42.00 for both parts.)
They came today and I installed them in about 45 minutes start to finish. Works great. The only issue I had was the orientation
of the Magnetron. The ears went front to back instead of side to side, I just installed it with the ears lined up with the holes
and just connected the 2 wires to the front instead of the side as that's where the connections were.
    Works like new! Thanks again.

    1. HV Capacitor from ovens built in the 1990s and newer have an integrated bleeder resistor, so no need to discharge; 2. Most DMMs cannot test the HV diode, used a 9V battery to test forward/reverse current for an open/closed diode; 3. Test the HV capacitor to verify it is a capacitor, remembering there is a 10MΩ resistor built in and 4. Test the two filament terminals on the magnetron for continuity around 1Ω between two terminals and no resistance between ground and either terminal. Only after all of these tests fail bother to replace the magnetron.

Maybe I missed it, but why did you decide to replace both components? Isn't the magnetron quite a bit more expensive than the diode? Why not try replacing the diode first and if that fixes it, then you wouldn't need to replace the much more expensive magnetron?

    • @BrickBuildingKids
      @BrickBuildingKids  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

For me, all signs pointed to the magnetron. I didn’t want to be in a situation where I replaced just the diode and waiting on the magnetron or the old magnetron damaging the diode. You are totally right though on costs.

I have looked up what could be wrong and it's the magnetron, diode, capacitor or fuse. How do you know which one of these it is beforehand? What part would make it hum if it goes bad? I don't want to buy parts I don't need, especially if the cheapest one.. the fuse is the culprit versus the magnetron.

I have a whirlpool countertop microwave model GT4185SKB -2 made in August 2002. (the “-2” at the end is the “ECN” number). It looks new inside and outside, with no food residue, no scorching and negligible rust. So I figured this machine may be “low miles.” So I just put a TV dinner in for 5 1/2 minutes. Everything worked fine, clock works, turntable spins, light comes on, and no unusual noise. But the TV dinner was still frozen. So apparently, no heat. Does this model default to the “HI” power setting? (most, if not all microwaves do). Did I not set the power setting right? Or any other possibility of “operator error?”

Perhaps it's the bigger relay on the logic board (directly connect the two wires coming out of it) or the thermal fuses (on the magnetron and on the oven body). There are also two more fuses (one where the main cable enters the case, the other between the transformer and HV capacitor).

The Magnetrons are not cheap on some models. Sometimes replacing the Microwave, is a better option if it has failed. In this case, testing before replacing did not happen. The diode is much cheaper than a magnetron. It may have fixed the problem. Less than $10.

This very good video got me started on my repair, so thank you! For anyone researching a microwave repair, I highly recommend this video first: th-cam.com/video/t1tdj3OnlXU/w-d-xo.htmlsi=PndPjWnIl0Mqzb6q There could be multiple reasons why a microwave doesn't work, probably good to run through them all. Repairing appliances is great (saves $, reduces waste) but it doesn't pencil out if you purchase parts on unnecessary repairs. So accurate diagnostics are important. I have the very same microwave as in this BBK video. In my case, I replaced the diode first - that wasn't the problem. I don't think the link for the magnetron in the description should be trusted (in my case, the mounting points were 90 degrees off) so research your exact model number. I found a magnetron and it solved the problem. Back to quieter and hotter operation! My magnetron magnets were not cracked, but the top one was loose (it would spin freely) so I think that was the problem. The link I pasted in this comment has a good approach to diagnosing the magnetron beforehand. Good luck on your projects everyone!

The magnatron part he listed in the description is currently selling for $50 on Amazon. The microwave he is reparing costs between $250 (Best Buy) and $320 (other vendors) brand new. My general rule of thumb is if the replacement parts cost less than 1/3 of the total cost of purchase, I’m down to fix it. If it starts costing more than that, I might as well save up the difference for a new one. Especially because sometimes you get the thing open, replace the recommended parts, and still have the problem. Then its back to the drawing board, or you’re buying more parts, wasted a whole Saturday messing with it, and still don’t have a working unit.

My personal advise don't buy expensive microwave big brands.. After few years the die too.. The time of my parents, buying a expensive brand was equally quality.. I changed my mind.. My whirlpool microwave cost me $250 few years ago.. And broken from nothing.. Soo why pay extra money for a well known brand? If the longevity is the same as a low cost brand?
    Now i will buy a $60 microwave..
Welcome to the excessive consume society..

Leather doesnt protect you. Rubber then leather over the rubber. The leather is to prevent wear to the rubber gloves. Also, when using a ticker, check a known power source first so you know it works properly.

Not sure why you didn't replace diode first then test to see if working...diodes are cheap and the most common part to fail from what I've read. But you replaced both at same time so everyone watching this have no idea which part was bad. Interesting video anyway to see the insides of the MW.

For the heat, this video should help but for the turntable not spinning, it could be your drive motor. If you take the tray out does the coupler still not spin?

I replaced the magnetron and the diode and the capacitor. It’s still making the buzzing noise and not heating.
    What else could it be?
