Aaahhhh..... memories. My first visit to City was in 1973 when I watched Trevor Tainton dash up and down the right wing tirelessly during a home win over Hull. I left school in summer 74 and got a job in London. Two years later I was living in a bedsit about 400 yards from Highbury and bought a ticket in the East enclosure for this game. When Clive Whitehead crossed and Paul Cheesly soared into the air to head that goal I was right in line with Paul. I leapt into the air and turned a roar into a squeak in mid jump when everyone else around me gave me a look which seemed to say... “See you outside later sonny!” Ulp...
I became and still am an Arsenal fan but, after years of working all over the world I am now back in Bristol with a season ticket in the fantastic new Lansdowne stand, cheering City on to, we hope, future success in the Premiership. COYR....

I was there as a kid, a very hot day, what a great team, Cheesley had such a great future ahead, My Dad started singing Drink Up Ye Cider and then all the City fans joined in! Happy Days

Although not a City fan, I do appreciate good old fashioned soccer. And this ticks all the boxes!

Damn, what might have been........ nearly 40 years on, Paul Cheesley is still the best player I ever saw in a City shirt.

Cashley, Collier, Merrick, Tainton and Cheesley: 5 Bristol boys (plus Gow & Ritchie from the youth system) playing for the City at Arsenal. And winning. This aint going to ever happen again.

True, but without looking up, which one on your list played for the club long after the rest had left?

@@charliemagri1669 - I wish I could answer that question but I'd have to look it up...😄

Dommi Davros Despite a one season move to Sunderland, Richie was still playing for the club in 1984 and while in Division 4. The rest were either sold on for finances, left or had their contracts torn up. Jon Shaw, Not on your list, stayed the longest - leaving in 1985 -and remained the first choice keeper soon after this match. I still have a signed team poster from this era and all of these players autographs on programmes as well.

What a side Bristol City had then; so many legends and pity they had reached their peak by 1979; Cheesley's injury forced him to retire and then huge wage bills led to their successive relegations. At least they didn't bottle it and tried to live the dream!

Jimmy Rimmer playing for Arsenal in goal. A very good keeper in a mediocre team at the time. But he went on to Villa in 77/78 season.

Whitehead was the best winger in the division, should have played for England. Better than All the rest, could beat defenders easily for fun and crossed the ball beautifully!

I left Ireland for London, England in June 1976 aged 21 and this was the first match I attended on the opening day of the season in 1976 at Highbury. First match ever on English soil for me. I can still remember that Paul Cheesely headed goal and the faces of the Arsenal supporters in the North Bank where I and my mucker through inexperience inadvertently ended up ! City were freshly promoted from the old League Division 2. I believe Paul Cheesely had to retire from football prematurely that very same season 76/77.

@MySilverr Good knowledge! Had better luck with Villa winning the European Cup, and I think he remains the only Englishman to have acheived two European Cup wins with different clubs, having been a sub with Man U in 1968.

I went as Arsenal fan to watch Supermac's debut but Bristol city dominated the game and should have won by 2 or 3 goals .. and also remember Arsenal made bids for Tom Ritchie and Geoff Merrick but were rejected
