Inherited my grandpa’s 1950 8N about a year a go. Not a perfect tractor but a nice tractor. Fun to tinker with now and then. No longer doing much work - other than hauling the grandkids around. Lots of new memories being made 😊

Since the 8N I'm getting will be for woods work, I'm having a welder friend of mine weld up a new front bumper that I can hang weights on as well as mount a winch. This is why I'm happy the 12V conversion has already been done

Picking up an 8N tomorrow. First ever tractor. Guy was going to scrap it and said if I paid scrap price I could get it. $200 not running and needs a rear wheel. I'm a pretty good mechanic so we will see if I can get it running again. I purchased 22.66 acres in the desert. Hoping the tractor will be helpful as I try to make a farm. I found a loader setup for $150 an hour in the opposite direction. I'm hoping to get the tractor and loader setup working for under $1,000. Have no idea what I am doing but I have TH-cam. Lol
The tractors seem pretty easy to work on. Sounds like you have a great plan and found a super deal. You will enjoy the time with the tractor. Good luck!

haha, I don't. I think you are talking about the small tree mover that I made. I spent a lot of time on it. Everything was custom made. I need to figure out what else it can be used for one of these days. Maybe I should make a video on it.
8Ns are good but my favorite is the Ferguson TO-35. Live PTO and a few more horses. With the Ford N-series be sure to use an overrunning clutch to avoid the brush hog pushing the tractor through fences or into ditches. Live PTO disconnects the PTO.

A lot of people confused the 2N with the 9N since both are almost identical and have serial numbers starting with "9N". The 8N came out in 1947 and had a lot of improvements over the 2N, 4 speed transmission, position control, etc. The Golden Jubilee came out in 1953 and added even more upgrades, larger OHV engine, live hydraulics, optionable live PTO, etc. You can trace the N-series up to 1964 with the 2000 and 4000 tractors that came out in 1962.
That's an awesome scoop. Tractor seems to be running real nice there. I only paid $20 for the scoop I modified, so I didn't mind attempting my experiment. Thanks for sharing the video, and knowledge.
I prefer the 8N personally due to the location of the distributor for when you need to adjust timing or clean up points (unless you've also upgraded to modern ignition). The ONLY thing i don't like is the lack of "live pto" / hydraulics (for safety reasons), but for a mower or woods tractor you can't beat it
The 1950+ with side mount distributor is probably relatively better, IMHO. I have a 51 and a 48. Your assessment of the $1,400 old=$18,000 new is accurate, but remember, there is no tax on $1,000 used, and parts are probably more available for the 70 year old stuff and definitely cheaper. Try rebuilding a Yanmar engine for the same price.
I have 2, and my brother has 2, his are a 860, and a 871. Mine is a 631, and an Allis D17D. Everything the Fords need is available from Ford and or aftermarket. The 8n just doesn’t have the power for what we need to do, and my Allis has parts issues. The flat rate manual gives twice as many hours to rebuild the engine as my 6 cylinder diesel, so there are sone trade offs. Have fun

@@LohreFarm We grew them for practice and to show my family gave most away to help people. Look for a cole planter mx12, speedo one row potato planter. You will not be able to eat all the food you grow. Now is the time to by seeds on sale.

Life stories of these old tractors would be pretty cool. I believe mine has had many parts replaced over the years. It would be cool to know why.

We had a 9N back in the 60's. Putting car tires on the front as you have was a lifesaver when it came to driving over new breaking on the homestead.

I did see that a company made a way to deal with the live pro issue. I think they are pretty hard to find though.

Yes, the availability of parts alone is huge. There really hasn't been a part I couldn't find, and at a reasonable price too. Great comment!
