Possibly the best acapella tracks of all time? Love your reaction, my man.

Hi Harri! Gaudette is a sacred Christmas Carol from the 16th century

It is originally a medieval poem written to praise of the birth of Jesus. The music has been composed in the 16th century. Please search for singer Neumann's version on this. :) It is an a capella performed by a small studio group, the solo parts provided by a boy tenor. Neumann's inspiration was this version by Steeleye Span so you can compare, especially the pronunciation. You'll notice the sharp letters r and different letters e. They pronounce it dé rather than "day". It is also bit faster in tempo.

Gaudete means Rejoice and was a Christmas hymn from 1600s
Rejoice, rejoice! Christ is born Of the Virgin Mary - Rejoice!
The time of grace has come- What we have wished for; Songs of joy Let us give back faithfully.
God has become man, With nature marvelling, The world has been renewed By the reigning Christ.
The closed gate of Ezekiel Is passed through, Whence the light is risen; Salvation has been found.
Therefore, let our assembly Now sing in brightness Let it bless the Lord: Salvation to our King

Great choice! Saw them open for Jethro Tull in the early 1970s and they were mesmerizing. "Commoner's Crown" is, I think, their most approachable album. Electric folk at its finest.

Yeah it's a Latin hymn sung a cappella (one of the few Steeleye Span songs without accompaniment).
Basically "Rejoice, Rejoice, Christ is Born by the Virgin Mary, Rejoice." Could be "Celebrate."
But, yeah, basically a Christmas hymn sung a cappella.
    -----
If you want a broader window into their music, which spans all kinds of genres, there's plenty of great songs to dig into...
"A Calling On Song" is a great folksy introduction.
They have very whimsical songs: "Skewball," "The Fox."
They have very "dark" songs: "Long Lankin," "Lord Randall," "King Henry."
They have very pastoral songs: "Harvest of the Moon," "The Old Turf Fire."
They have rather cheeky songs: "New York Girls," "Four Nights Drunk."
    Drinking Songs: "Tonight's The Night"
    Jigs/Reels: Mooncoin Jig, etc.
Fantastical songs: "700 Elves," "Wee Wee Man," "Allison Gross," "Dance With Me."
Even one I'd liken to "Mr. Roboto": "To Be Human."
A bit of "commentary": "You Will Burn"
A bit of Historical stuff: "Prince Charlie Stewart," "Hard Times of Old England," "Ned Ludd," "The Victory," etc.
Some low-key "risque" stuff: "Gentleman Soldier," "Cold Haily Windy Night," "Brisk Young Butcher," "Seventeen Come Sunday."

It is hard to imagine someone getting a top 20 hit with this kind of song today.
Please, search for Neumann's version on this. He did it 1986 for his album with a small studio group, a boy tenor providing the solo parts. Neumann's inspiration was this one so you can compare the pronunciation. :) It is also has a bit faster tempo.

quite probably the only Latin song to reach the charts........and it's quite beautiful.. Steeleye Span were brilliantly talented musicians, and their music and their style has seen them survive over 50 years in the music business.. I have virtually every one of their albums, and absolutely love their music.. Maddie Prior has the voice of an angel........

Oh, wow! I love Steeleye Span. Try Gambol Gold and Robin Hood (sp?) or All Around My Hat.

Gamble Gold and Robin Hood is in my top 3 Steeleye tracks (along with Hills of Greenmore and Long Lankin)

      "Harvest of the Moon"
      "The Black Freighter"
      "Let Her Go Down"
The remade "Boys of Bedlam" (I think from either "Dodgy Bastards," "Bloody Men," or their "50th Anniversary Tour" album) is brilliantly "insane".

The "Gaudete! Christus est natus ex Maria vigine" part means "Rejoyce! Christ is born from the virgin Marie". You should definitely also check out the versions done by Pasha Lisitsyn or The King's Singers. In my opinion those are way better than the steeleye one...
