This was it. I was 13. I’d already had S&K for three years but I happened to see Sonic 3 in a store and begged my dad to get it for me. When I combined them I truly knew joy. I now have this game on an emulator on my tablet.
Lol and it sure as heck wasn't this moment. What a shambles almost every boss fight in this game is (to play that is; they're beautiful to watch). I like sonic 3, it's the least flawed 2D sonic. But that's not saying much. A sizeable portion of it is still irredeemable and janky af. I'd sooner play Rush Adventure, at least it's more honest about its BS and has more consistently good level design, even if the story and the physics aren't a scratch on 3.
The music, the sound effects, the visuals.. I don't know how they did it but this game is ahead of it's time ! I'll bet everyone was playing this back in '94 !

Can we just talk about the scene? Sonic transforms right into space, chasing after Robotnik as he still has the master emerald, and he harnesses the power of the super emeralds in order to stop him. No matter what Robotnik throws at him, sonic still forces his way through, takes down his ship and is ready to fight the Mecha Suit in order for the master emerald. It really IS the final showdown.
Gotta give it to Robotnik though, No matter how many times he's defeated, Even to seemingly the perfect plan, He always has some new crazy invention and tries again

I love how laser-focused Sonic seems, he knows what’s at stake here. The fate of the entire world is shouldered by this entire battle. Sonic knows that if Robotnik gets away with the Master Emerald then the planet would become a robotized mess within the week, and he’s isn’t going to let that happen. He must end this once and for all.
Eggman doesn't actually robotize anything, it's just one of the Sega of America's headcanons to make Sonic series "darker", even where it doesn't fit them at all.
This was just a rollercoaster of an ending for a sonic game. If you were playing S&K on it's own, you might have been led to believe the doomsday zone was only available to Sonic 3 and Knuckles Lock on, get all the emeralds and suddenly, NOPE you can do it as base Super Sonic! But here, no cheesey dialogue, just a kick ass theme and a boss that leaves you in a real struggle against time. Also notice the slight variations of the endings Sonic does not get emeralds - He falls free from space and the Emerald doesn't follow him down. Sonic gets Chaos Emeralds (Best S&K ending) - Sonic takes the emerald down but he reverts to normal upon entering the blue sky and free falls till tails gets him. Knuckles does not appear in the ending Sonic gets Super Emeralds (Best S3&K ending) - Sonic takes the emerald down and retains his hyper form till he lands on the plane. Knuckles appears after the plane is departing to look over his new allies (till the next time he falls for silly lies).
I just beat this level for the first time not too long ago. Got all the Chaos/Super Emeralds and everything, and I beat Eggman's mech with ONE ring left. Like, another second and I would've died. Telling ya, my heart was POUNDING.
Not only do we have Michael Jackson's hidden legacy in this game, but some of the most dynamic gameplay and epic moments in the series. It'll never get this good ever again.

No lie this zone took me by surprise. I've played this game as a kid and never got neither the super emeralds or the chaos emeralds but as an adult I did. And let me tell this has got to be the most satisfying/surprising gaming experience I've ever witnessed. The soundtrack, the setting, the desperation, this was the True tip of the Climax. When I beat this zone with just 2 rings left, then heard the sky sanctuary theme play... I felt such a great sense of heroism and joy. Truly the best game of the 16bit era

I feel sad kids today will never experience the feeling that you get when you're thrown into Doomsday Zone the first time. You defeated Death Egg Act 2. You put your controller down, expecting the credit scene to come up. Suddenly you get thrown into space, Sonic turns super (hyper), the fast pace music comes up unexpectedly letting you know this shit is serious. There is no draggy cringy cut scene, chats. dialog leading into Doomsday Zone. It just happens within a few seconds. I will never feel this moments in gaming ever again. It is also unbelievably awesome that you get to FLY as Sonic in hyper speed, for this ONE stage. The experience make getting all the emerald worth it.
I'm 14 now but I owned a ps2 that could run S3&K and what you just explained literally brought me back to a time I will never be as excited about. Thank you.
The Doomsday will be remembered in my eyes as one of the best Sonic Stages ever! And I would have loved to see Hyper Sonic and The Doomsday Zone return in Sonic Mania!
This is by far his toughest Death egg robot,since it can withstand Hyper Sonic's hits,which is comparable to making a big hole that can be seen on Earth

I remember as a kid I was tryna beat “Doomsday Zone” it was one of the hardest levels I ever had to face but also one of the best levels I’ve ever played. Flying in space facing meteoroids, catching rings for more energy and also playing Super Sonic to catch Dr. Robotnik(Eggman) in his robot without needing to get all the emeralds(Eventually I got all the emeralds and super emeralds) but having to experience this in my childhood was amazing. Definitely one of my top 3 favourite Sonic games ;)
Screw the creators of the game saying that Hyper Sonic isn't canon, it's canon in my head! Basically a headcanon. This specific zone is genius! You're *Hyper* Sonic racing through space, stopping Eggman from potientially creating a doomsday! Danger is at it's peak, and it's up to *you* to stop him! This is why Sonic 3 and knuckles is my favorite genesis game, of all time. Crazy to believe that this game was made in 1994; especially the music! The music is a banger, and it gives a sense of "last chance, final stage, our last chance for hope all or nothing, now or never!" Sega was a genius back then! Gotta give props to them.

I've never played Doomsday Zone and I've always believed the Death Egg Robot from Sonic 2 to be the most epic final bosses from the Mega Drive era. But I must admit this is epic too, The music and everything going on really portrays that this is Robotniks last resort, That if everything goes wrong he'd fall back on escaping with the Master Emerald with a machine that literally is impenetrable to even Hyper Sonic and its own weapons are the only thing that can damage it. And upon the eventuality of that being defeated, He still has a final trick up his sleeve with the modified Death Egg Robot designed to go as fast as it can for him to try and escape with the Master Emerald
if you didnt experience this as a child after spending hours and hours after getting the standard ending and then finally getting all the emeralds you had a shitty childhood

The greatest final boss in its age. Imagine playing s3&k as a kid getting hyper sonic and defeating the death egg, and then seeing hyper sonic flying around in space.
Eggman proves himself to be the ultimate Sonic villain only in Sonic 3 and Knuckles. Throughout the last two games, he didn't take Sonic seriously. In this game, he finally takes him seriously, but still goofs around with him half of the game. If you notice the narrative, as the game goes on, his machines become more and more crude, showing less scientific ingenuity and more crude and effective methods for dispatching Sonic. It all culminates with Lava Reef Zone when his rage and frustration is revealed and he foregoes all of his classiness to defeat Sonic. Only to think ahead of Sonic a few steps with contingency plans until you get to this point. I like to think that Hyper Sonic is the canon form in this fight, because it'd emphasize that when he's truly serious, Dr. Eggman is a greater threat than the godly villains and he pushes Sonic to his absolute limit
This was so fun to play! It had so much intensity as you have to watch your ring count and you have to catch up to Eggman’s ship and Death Egg Robot and it’s so fun playing as Hyper Sonic.
There it is, the final battle. Both rivals seem to be serious about this, each with their own story to tell. If Sonic doesn’t stop Robotnik, he’ll take over the entirety of Mobius. If Eggman loses, then there’s no hope he can make a comeback after that battle. This was such a great and smooth way to end the Genesis series of Sonic The Hedgehog. This game is replayable and fun to complete over and over again. You can think of many scenarios in the Doomsday Zone. If one of them loses, it’s doomsday for them. The music is incredible and suits the vibe here. Picture this: If Sonic loses, he’ll run out of rings and be stuck in space, with no one to help him. The Tornado doesn’t have enough power to reach space, so it’s a terrible game over for Sonic. If Eggman loses, he plummets down to Earth, with everything gone. Thinking about the mistake of betraying Knuckles, so he could stall Sonic a little longer. Well, that’s all I have to say about Sonic 3&K.
To this day, there has been NOTHING in gaming history that gave the same feeling of getting to Doomsday Zone. The fact that you have to go through so damn much, get a whole other cartridge, and make it to the end makes this feel so damn epic... like the battle to end all battles kind of situation.

One of the most obscure differences here is that the Master Emerald glows if you have all of the Super Emeralds. If you don't, it does not glow.

I feel sad kids today will never experience the feeling that you get when you're thrown into Doomsday Zone the first time. You defeated Death Egg Act 2. You put your controller down, expecting the credit scene to come up. Suddenly you get thrown into space, Sonic turns super (hyper), the fast pace music comes up unexpectedly letting you know this shit is serious. There is no draggy cringy cut scene, chats. dialog leading into Doomsday Zone. It just happens within a few seconds. I will never feel this moments in gaming ever again. It is also unbelievably awesome that you get to FLY as Sonic in hyper speed, for this ONE stage. The experience make getting all the emerald worth it.

I remember as a kid I was tryna beat “Doomsday Zone” it was one of the hardest levels I ever had to face but also one of the best levels I’ve ever played. Flying in space facing meteoroids, catching rings for more energy and also playing Super Sonic to catch Dr. Robotnik(Eggman) in his robot without needing to get all the emeralds(Eventually I got all the emeralds and super emeralds) but having to experience this in my childhood was amazing. Definitely one of my top 3 favourite Sonic games ;)

Screw the creators of the game saying that Hyper Sonic isn't canon, it's canon in my head! Basically a headcanon. This specific zone is genius! You're *Hyper* Sonic racing through space, stopping Eggman from potientially creating a doomsday! Danger is at it's peak, and it's up to *you* to stop him! This is why Sonic 3 and knuckles is my favorite genesis game, of all time. Crazy to believe that this game was made in 1994; especially the music! The music is a banger, and it gives a sense of "last chance, final stage, our last chance for hope all or nothing, now or never!" Sega was a genius back then! Gotta give props to them.
It took me 7 years to finally beat this game on my PS2 i could never have passed this game without my brother he played as tails and help me find all the giant rings when we finally got all the super emeralds we were happy and when it showed DOOMS DAY ZONE ON THE SCREEN HE UNPLUG THE SECOND PLAYER CONTROLLER AND WE WERE READY IT TOOK ME SO LONG TO BEAT BUT WITH MY BROTHER WE WOULD NEVER HAVE DONE IT AND I'M THANKFUL FOR THAT HE HELP ME BEAT THIS GAME BUT THE BEST PART WAS THE FUN WE HAD DOING SO

After facing off aginst the final boss this was the moment which made every kid feel like they'd become the final boss.
I've never played Doomsday Zone and I've always believed the Death Egg Robot from Sonic 2 to be the most epic final bosses from the Mega Drive era. But I must admit this is epic too, The music and everything going on really portrays that this is Robotniks last resort, That if everything goes wrong he'd fall back on escaping with the Master Emerald with a machine that literally is impenetrable to even Hyper Sonic and its own weapons are the only thing that can damage it. And upon the eventuality of that being defeated, He still has a final trick up his sleeve with the modified Death Egg Robot designed to go as fast as it can for him to try and escape with the Master Emerald

Eggman proves himself to be the ultimate Sonic villain only in Sonic 3 and Knuckles. Throughout the last two games, he didn't take Sonic seriously.
In this game, he finally takes him seriously, but still goofs around with him half of the game. If you notice the narrative, as the game goes on, his machines become more and more crude, showing less scientific ingenuity and more crude and effective methods for dispatching Sonic.
It all culminates with Lava Reef Zone when his rage and frustration is revealed and he foregoes all of his classiness to defeat Sonic. Only to think ahead of Sonic a few steps with contingency plans until you get to this point. I like to think that Hyper Sonic is the canon form in this fight, because it'd emphasize that when he's truly serious, Dr. Eggman is a greater threat than the godly villains and he pushes Sonic to his absolute limit

There it is, the final battle. Both rivals seem to be serious about this, each with their own story to tell. If Sonic doesn’t stop Robotnik, he’ll take over the entirety of Mobius. If Eggman loses, then there’s no hope he can make a comeback after that battle. This was such a great and smooth way to end the Genesis series of Sonic The Hedgehog. This game is replayable and fun to complete over and over again. You can think of many scenarios in the Doomsday Zone. If one of them loses, it’s doomsday for them. The music is incredible and suits the vibe here. Picture this: If Sonic loses, he’ll run out of rings and be stuck in space, with no one to help him. The Tornado doesn’t have enough power to reach space, so it’s a terrible game over for Sonic. If Eggman loses, he plummets down to Earth, with everything gone. Thinking about the mistake of betraying Knuckles, so he could stall Sonic a little longer. Well, that’s all I have to say about Sonic 3&K.

To this day, there has been NOTHING in gaming history that gave the same feeling of getting to Doomsday Zone. The fact that you have to go through so damn much, get a whole other cartridge, and make it to the end makes this feel so damn epic... like the battle to end all battles kind of situation.
