Incredible recap! Rewatching the reveal like this, I just realised how much I love how Yana Toboso sets it up, with all the main characters in this arc all coming to the same conclusion at the same time, but not revealing it to the reader until Sebastian & Ciel show up at the manor. So suspenseful and brilliantly written!

Sebastian may be incapable of feeling love but he held a genuine admiration and respect for Agni and did consider him a companion. His face when Ciel asked if Agni was breathing says it all. He was visibly upset for a second there to confirm that Agni is indeed dead. This brought me to tears. You were the very epitome of a butler and a very great man, Agni, rest in peace
2:56:53 ”the thing that stands atop the stairs” sounds like a good name for a horror related book or movie. And yes, to Our Ciel, this moment is some kind of horror indeed. This arch was very interesting in a Sense that I’m not into any idol groups and I like divination and such themes only aesthetically alluring. It’s so compelling that the surface level fun get together was actually just a cult. Also makes me sad that the p4 kinda left one cult mindset only to find themselves in another one without their knowing. At first glance I felt this arc was more lighthearted ( until everything began to go downhill of course ) but yeah no, this actually has an ominous vibe pretty much from the start. I feel like the buildup in this is so good and we get introduced to different puzzle pieces that just add up. Towards the end it’s so crazy to me how many hints, cut off sentences and panels we get before finally revealing the truth. I am a firm believer that it’s okay for fans to figure out a plot twist, it just means that you have done a good and reasonable job with it. Nothing is more horrible than making nonsense plot twists just for shock value like the evil twin trope usually is. Anyway really looking forward to the grand backstory time. I feel we should mentally prepare, it’s a lot to take in, in so many different ways.
2:37:27 i personally think Grell was depressed here and the rain falling on her just makes her look more sad. Grell would have made a snarky remark and left in a hurry because it was raining but she didn't. She probably just got loss in thought and stayed there for a couple of minutes.
I love the goth makeup at the beginning. When I first read the blue cult arc, I wasn't really into K-pop or J-pop idol groups (still haven't gone down that rabbit hole) so I interpreted the S4 and P5 as a version of musical theatre, especially with all the character acting of the P5 lol. 26:56 this scene reminds me of the flash back in Boc where we see Vincent with his kids at the party. Ciel was hiding behind Sebastian just like how he did with his father.
1:00:17 I remember reading most of Yana's old blog, she claims her reasoning for the fanservice was because she thought it was funny that her not yaoi comic was considered gay and was surprised people shipped Ciel and Sebastian. Oh I never got to read much of Yana's old blog, but that is really fascinating! It does seem like most the actual SebaCiel fanservice moments are more of a joke than anything too serious. A lot of anime and manga have a certain level of sexual harassment framed as a joke (girls groping each other with out consent happens ALL THE TIME it's actually wild). I don't think the anime will make any changes to Sullivan, especially in that regard. I think Lizzy's main objective was to keep Sebastian from exploring the music hall. Death wasn't her priority, but I don't think she was thinking about it either. Just doing her part to protect r!Ciel. I'm pretty sure all the S4 have different blood types, but it's never actually stated. As for Fayte0love's video on who Polaris is, I have seen it! Thank you for all your comments and historical contexts!!
@@laurenmungaray3912 Because the Commanche Slave Empire was destroyed in 1875, Baldroy is depicted as fighting them well into 1887. Meaning either the timeline is VERY different or Baldroy was killing innocent natives that made peace with the USA.

Hihi, first time commenting one of your videos. Love your BB deep dives. One of the main things I like is comparing translations (mine are in Spanish) for example at 2:04:44 Ciel says something akin to “Don’t bring up matters of the past in here!” In the Spanish version, so it’s interesting to see how (at least imo) it gives an extra layer to the statement. Great video btw, can’t wait for blue memory arc! 💙
Oh that's really cool! I know different translations have to take some liberties here and there, so being able to compare two different translations is really cool!
I am finally not half a year late to the new Black Butler video! XD Thank you so much for releasing them! They made my work week livable! I don't have that many comments this time. First of all, I wanted to say that I am one of the people for whom the reveal came out of the blue (lol), so, you dissecting small revealing details makes me appreciate Yana's attention to details even more! Second of all, I think this arc is where character design peaked. Everything was so impacable, yet retained its original character. Sebastian was the hottest he has ever been (with the exception of some select later chapters), Ciel has been the most expressive, and I could feel Agni's love and Soma's dispair through the pages. Overall, absolutely stellar presentation! Third of all, and I may be really wrong here, but I think portraying that disadvantaged people could not read may or may not have been entirely accurete on Yana's part. Before widespread literacy of today, people in England considered reading and writing different skills and would teach them separately for different purposes. Protestants were high on education, so, they tought women and men to read so that they could read the Bible (which was not crucial before as they would be read the Bible in church by a priest in Latin before the reformation), but they would often not teach women to write, because writing was considered a male domain. This trend continued into the Victorian era when a lot of folks could read. That is why Penny Dreadfuls were so popular, because more and more people could read them. So, I think the first lady Sebastian picked up in the bar would probably be able to read in real life (but maybe not write). Then again, my only source for this is a single video by J. Draper, so, I could be wrong!
8:32 I'm 5.5 feet and 31 8:40 I interpreted this as him still thinking about the 'looks like his father' part 19:10 Interesting that they had Queen Victoria worried over class mingling since she regularly interacted with her people, one time a mentally ill man hobbled up to her and smashed her face in, when the crowd attacked the man Queen Victoria saved the mentally ill man herself claiming that she was unharmed (a obvious lie since he broke her cheek bone), the more and more I learn about her the more down to earth she seems (and the more I really don't want her to be the main villain) 22:52 As an older brother I sympathize greatly with Edward, especially in this scene 25:50 Not really while the Stuart Era had a classism problem the early Georgean Era had a classism problem by the end of it much of seemed to have dissipated then of course Queen Victoria and her loyal noblemen were VERY popular with the lower-class 19th century America had a classism problem though, so it really depended on the country 27:49 I think he is like the Phantomhives/Midfords he has supernatural abilities but is pretty much human 31:07 As toxic as Ciel and Sebastian's relationship is, I do think Ciel views him as friend, there are too many scenes where he ignores that Sebastian wants to kill him 32:37 Interesting that Vega has the two lovers thing going on, since Vega (who I'm assuming is Layla/Al) has the duel personality thing going on 36:23 Ah a fellow Leo (are all people born in Augast short?) 43:00 Yeah, people stanned people all throughout history 45:07 I wouldn't say gatekept so much as that it took too long to teach for something that the average person at the time wouldn't need, it was expensive but that wasn't the only reason the lower-class didn't learn to read 47:29 Ah you understand post-modernism occultism, Bill Gates would proud 50:27 It wasn't as uncommon (even in Christianized Europe) for someone to enjoy the Iliad and the Odessey, there is a reason we still remember those stories, so yes 50:57 By an excellent woman (I'm not sorry) 51:13 That is funny
Edward really is a great older brother. I'm also an older sibling, so I understand his position a bit in this arc. I think a lot of us agree that Layla/Al could be Vega! I'm very excited to see how Yana Toboso ties all this up! As to the nature of Ciel and Sebastian's relationship, I do agree that there are a lot of moments where it seems like Ciel believes he holds the power in that dynamic, but I wouldn't say that's him seeing Sebastian as a friend. More so him putting a lot of trust in the leash he has Sebastian on with the contract. They have a really fascinating dynamic though that does teeter more towards friendly in some moments, and Ciel does seem very upset with Sebastian after moments where he is reminded that the demon is not someone he can trust. So maybe you are right there! Maybe I'm taking for granted being taught to read at a really young age then, because I wouldn't say it took too long, but my mom also made sure to read to me and my siblings when we were too young to read ourselves, and made sure we had a desire to read, and helped a lot with teaching at home. Reading is just such an essential part of living in my opinion that it's hard to me to see it as something a whole class of people didn't need to learn or thought wasn't worth the time to learn.
@@PocketLeaves Carlo Collodi (that's the guy who wrote 'Adventures of Pinocchio' in 1883) would agree with your second paragraph, it wasn't so much that learning to read took a long time, it was that the lower-class believed it took too long to learn something that they didn't need too, they also believed it got in the way of fun and encouraged elitist behavior. Carlo Collodi genuinely believed that education was an essential source of liberation for the lower-class and a massive advocate for literacy and mathematics for all.
I don't know English at a good level, so I watch your retellings with yandex, which translates them to me. i want to say that i am incredibly grateful to you for your creativity on black butler!
Amazing recap as always! This is the last story arc I read in full. Like you, I was in college when this arc was coming out and I got busy with finishing my degree. Sadly, this caused me to fall off the fandom until you started this video series! Can't wait for the Blue Memory Arc recap.
2:06:05 Its interesting to think of the older twin as a prankster, since we only see him be cute as in the flashbacks and monstrous in present 2:07:34 Can't say I know much such things either 2:10:22 Its a hardcore tactic 2:11:31 Alas IRL Abberline would eventually quit his job over a scandal involving underage boys and a government coverup (he really didn't like pedophiles) 2:13:16 to be fair hearing you son sing about 'stripping virgins' would upset most parents 2:15:14 Soma and Agni have the patience of saints (or whatever Hindus have instead), I could never stomach walking around eggshells with people 2:17:26 Doll, McMillian and Bluer, its a pity Ciel never tries to maintain these relationships... I imagine they will have consequences down the line 2:31:11 These two are such great characters 2:31:29 I like that they kept West's deer head 2:36:37 Yeah, this is probably the closest we'll ever see Sebastian feeling love 2:43:45 I can't see the link 2:56:55 'I have them' love your comedy 2:57:41 Is this when you started doing the cosplay skits? 3:03:14 Shots fired at Yana, I wonder if she watches these vids?
so, 2:28:58 you talk about how ciels survival guilt prevents him from being affectionate. I see it as, he does care for these people dearly but loving them more, it'll hurt more when hes forced to part ways with his soul and die after his wish. and to try and lessen that, hes withdrawn. its very sad way to be stuck living
I think Yana fully intended you/us to think of that cult when the boys came on stage. Makes for a great clffhager and effectively yanks us off-base, preventing us from working out where she's headed--something she's very good at doing.
so i searched on google was there a real ciel in real life, and i found him on google he had parents with the same name married to a Elizabeth, and died at 30 yrs old, so i honestly wondered if we would get a time skip, see them married, he looks like his father finally and the queen would be dead by then. all that would be left is seeing if the revenge is finally carried out
@@Mailed-Knight I don't know your discord but like I said in my comment. I found this all googling. Shouldn't be that hard to find the same things I found and stated here friend I just mentioned it because it really added alot to how I view this series. Knowing real life really is being used as much as possible
I absolutely love all of your Black Butler deep dives, I’ve been a fan since around 2012/2013. I used to read the manga online but I haven’t caught up to the current plot lines and archs. I do have a few theories, though they may not have any backing; but I think it’s interesting to think about. I think if the queen knows about undertaker and his ‘dolls’, she may be turning a blind eye, maybe she wants Albert back. Even if he isn’t himself. I also wonder if undertaker will attempt to resurrect Vincent and Rachel, what if he’s trying to put the Phantomhive family ‘back together’. I don’t know, I just thought it was interesting. I think it would be a brutal way to end the series, to have Our Ciel have to take out his ‘family’ to take back the title of Earl of Phantomhive. (This was just a thing I thought of and I know it’s probably nowhere close to cannon)
I do think Undertaker wanted to bring Vincent (and possibly Rachel) back, but as it stands now he can't because their bodies were too badly damaged in the fire. I could see him figuring out another way though if it'd be possible with the in universe lore Yana Toboso is working with.
@@PocketLeavesThat’s a very fair point, I honestly forgot about the severity of the fire. I figured if Undertaker was able to bring R Ciel back and reverse the decomposition process that maybe he could somehow bring Vincent and maybe Rachel back unscathed as well. It’s just so fun to think about the story and all of the possible lore implications.
It was love at first sight with my boy Othello! And I don't even believe in love at first sight. 😅 P.S. I'd like to have a philosophical discussion with Sebastian.
watching video for like a 6th time something like that. how did the servants and soma all not ask "hey? wheres your eye patch?" when they thought they where around ciel? i feel like that should make them go wait a minute, ive never seen this kids right eye before
"enough about that cringe" no, no, no, lets got back to that cringe. what do you mean character's reincarnation? (not judging, just genuinely curious abt it)
@@Bia-pn8hi The video I had made about it unfortunately had to be taken down. But the long and short of it, someone that used to be infamous in the fandom was gathering people under the pretense that he felt we were all reincarnations of the fictional characters, and that Black Butler really happened. It's like old school kinning. Not too much else to say about it really. We were all delusional and manipulated at the time.
Everybody talks about the double Charles... why does no one think of the one who has already demonstrated he can move as fast as Sebastian? why does no one suspect John Brown and his dodgy horse?!
i want you to know that a while back i wanted to reread this arc, but held off knowing your video on it was coming eventually. but the over that time i forgot 😶 so then 2 nights ago i reread the arc. then the next day this video went up. 😂 i was so mad since it reminded me why i waited and the fact that i forget and then a single day before the video i binged the arc.... hilarious. also i just want to say that in regards to grandpa undertaker... you are not crazy. there is just too much evidence. we are not crazy, we are just right!!! if Yana were to reveal it not to be the case then honestly it would feel more like an active subversion rather than the intended narrative. and Yana really isn't that kind of writer by my understanding. she sets things up, then she pays them off. y'know, like a normal person. (grumbles about the popularity of shock value plot twists) anyway good video. looking forward to your coverage of the halloween chapter and blue memories!

I think the reason Nina hates Sebastian so much is because he probably reminds her of Vincent.
8:32 I'm 5.5 feet and 31
8:40 I interpreted this as him still thinking about the 'looks like his father' part
19:10 Interesting that they had Queen Victoria worried over class mingling since she regularly interacted with her people, one time a mentally ill man hobbled up to her and smashed her face in, when the crowd attacked the man Queen Victoria saved the mentally ill man herself claiming that she was unharmed (a obvious lie since he broke her cheek bone), the more and more I learn about her the more down to earth she seems (and the more I really don't want her to be the main villain)
22:52 As an older brother I sympathize greatly with Edward, especially in this scene
25:50 Not really while the Stuart Era had a classism problem the early Georgean Era had a classism problem by the end of it much of seemed to have dissipated then of course Queen Victoria and her loyal noblemen were VERY popular with the lower-class 19th century America had a classism problem though, so it really depended on the country
27:49 I think he is like the Phantomhives/Midfords he has supernatural abilities but is pretty much human
31:07 As toxic as Ciel and Sebastian's relationship is, I do think Ciel views him as friend, there are too many scenes where he ignores that Sebastian wants to kill him
32:37 Interesting that Vega has the two lovers thing going on, since Vega (who I'm assuming is Layla/Al) has the duel personality thing going on
36:23 Ah a fellow Leo (are all people born in Augast short?)
43:00 Yeah, people stanned people all throughout history
45:07 I wouldn't say gatekept so much as that it took too long to teach for something that the average person at the time wouldn't need, it was expensive but that wasn't the only reason the lower-class didn't learn to read
47:29 Ah you understand post-modernism occultism, Bill Gates would proud
50:27 It wasn't as uncommon (even in Christianized Europe) for someone to enjoy the Iliad and the Odessey, there is a reason we still remember those stories, so yes
50:57 By an excellent woman (I'm not sorry)
51:13 That is funny
"This is the idol arc" what
*an hour later* ooooh
I was at that MomoCon panel in 2017!!!!
omg?! That's so neat!
Gregory Violet my beloved... what a diva...
2:06:05 Its interesting to think of the older twin as a prankster, since we only see him be cute as in the flashbacks and monstrous in present
2:07:34 Can't say I know much such things either
2:10:22 Its a hardcore tactic
2:11:31 Alas IRL Abberline would eventually quit his job over a scandal involving underage boys and a government coverup (he really didn't like pedophiles)
2:13:16 to be fair hearing you son sing about 'stripping virgins' would upset most parents
2:15:14 Soma and Agni have the patience of saints (or whatever Hindus have instead), I could never stomach walking around eggshells with people
2:17:26 Doll, McMillian and Bluer, its a pity Ciel never tries to maintain these relationships... I imagine they will have consequences down the line
2:31:11 These two are such great characters
2:31:29 I like that they kept West's deer head
2:36:37 Yeah, this is probably the closest we'll ever see Sebastian feeling love
2:43:45 I can't see the link
2:56:55 'I have them' love your comedy
2:57:41 Is this when you started doing the cosplay skits?
3:03:14 Shots fired at Yana, I wonder if she watches these vids?
OH! I had forgotten to actually put the link th-cam.com/video/j4MYDt3YEw4/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=AwesomeKuro
so, 2:28:58 you talk about how ciels survival guilt prevents him from being affectionate.
Makes for a great clffhager and effectively yanks us off-base, preventing us from working out where she's headed--something she's very good at
doing.
THANKS! 💜
if undertaker dosent turn out to be ciels grandpa im gonna do an angry backflip
GREAT ANALYSIS AS ALWAYS! BUT PLEASE! I MUST KNOW WHAT THE NAME OF THE SONG PLAYING IN THE BACKGROUND AT 02:56:46 IS! IT'S SUCH A BANGER!
Thank you so much girly
so i searched on google was there a real ciel in real life, and i found him on google he had parents with the same name married to a Elizabeth, and died at 30 yrs old, so i honestly wondered if we would get a time skip, see them married, he looks like his father finally and the queen would be dead by then. all that would be left is seeing if the revenge is finally carried out
I don't suppose I can have a link on Discord please?
@@Mailed-Knight I don't know your discord but like I said in my comment. I found this all googling. Shouldn't be that hard to find the same things I found and stated here friend I just mentioned it because it really added alot to how I view this series. Knowing real life really is being used as much as possible
Like this real life Ciel. Born 1875-1905. Died at 30. Just seems way to creepy to somehow tie that into our story
It’s just so fun to think about the story and all of the possible lore implications.
hahaha XD the book of flashbacks!
It was love at first sight with my boy Othello! And I don't even believe in love at first sight. 😅
P.S. I'd like to have a philosophical discussion with Sebastian.
TH-cam! You hid this from me! I watched the Public School Arc video like 4 times. This should indicate I want these videos PRONTO
watching video for like a 6th time something like that. how did the servants and soma all not ask "hey? wheres your eye patch?" when they thought they where around ciel? i feel like that should make them go wait a minute, ive never seen this kids right eye before
I would also like to know what they were thinking! I'm not sure if r!ciel was wearing an eye patch as a disguise, but it makes me wonder
"enough about that cringe" no, no, no, lets got back to that cringe. what do you mean character's reincarnation? (not judging, just genuinely curious abt it)
She's made a video about that before.
Everybody talks about the double Charles... why does no one think of the one who has already demonstrated he can move as fast as Sebastian? why does no one suspect John Brown and his dodgy horse?!
as a august leo i feel represented and as a type o negative blood haver im proud my music taste reflects that lol
i want you to know that a while back i wanted to reread this arc, but held off knowing your video on it was coming eventually. but the over that time i forgot 😶 so then 2 nights ago i reread the arc. then the next day this video went up.
(grumbles about the popularity of shock value plot twists) anyway good video. looking forward to your coverage of the halloween chapter and blue memories!
oh pocket leaves you will always be famous!!
Whenever I think we are close to being recent, I remember “oh. This person is still alive so can’t be” 💀
(Edit: Nevermind lmao)
omg (rip)
Our lord and savoir is back 😊
I wish ciel would be aged up. :(
May I ask why?
♥️♥️
me 28 and being 5 ft.... I took that personal XD
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA YESSSSSSS !!!!
Wait so Agni doesn't die in which arc but In blue after which arc?? I'm so confused why dose google say he dies in the next season?
They didn't put the effort in translating the dialogue eloquently during the climax of the arc. Go read the other on it's far better.
