The fandom is filled with both casual manga readers who don’t take this stuff too seriously and then there’s the crazy fans who take this series to seriously.
I joined the fandom in late 2015 early 2016. I was like 11/12 at the time, and my child brain thought this was the best thing in the world. I was obsessed, I made my grandma sew me a ciel cosplay. I remember getting into fan fiction shortly after I finished season one. Mind you I was 12 years old reading Sebastian x reader lemons on wattpad. I also was a sebaciel shipper. Now look back at it as a adult I’m literally disgusted that I shipped those two. I still love the series and manga, it will always hold a special place in my heart, because it was a big part of my growing up. I’m very excited about season 4 public school arc. The change in art style is interesting to say the least, I really hope it grows on me. I honestly love the manga much more then the anime now that I’m older, it’s darker then the anime, and gives more detail to the story. I loved season one of the anime as a kid, but now after reading all the manga, I kind hate it, because there only like 5 episodes out of the entire season that’s canon. It’s literally like a whole other story the rest of the season. Like I said the series will always be dear to me no matter how old I get💕
That's so fair! Honestly, I find most kids who shipped SebaCiel used Ciel as a self insert of sorts, and they though Sebastian was THE GUY for them asdfasd. Honestly, I've recently rewatched season 1 with a friend, and the canon episodes are the weakest episodes in the whole season. Not saying the anime is great, but there are some fun and interesting things going on. But it is frustrating that they jumped the gun on making an anime back when there was so little story to adapt, leaving fans with the confusing mess of anime continuity we now have.
Wow, I listened it (at x1.5 ☠️) while I was drawing Sebastian and I think that made it even better. I hadn't joined to the fandom until 2017, even though I have known the series since 2015 so I was completely unaware of almost everything about the early eras, so this video was quite informative. This was gorgeous

It so interesting to see how much black butler has changed so much throughout the years and how much work yana but into the series with interesting plot with so many interesting characters and how people are thing how the story will end with probably a bittersweet ending even comparing yana others with almost dark turn with Disney twisted wonderland game having a similar dark tone but having all dorm leaders characters having realistic problems that they deal with throughout their own chapters being seen as a “villain” from other students point of view since if people see them as “villains” then that how they will see themselves not wanting to fix their problems and things that all of these negative things that have been said to throughout their backstory and whole life even as kids makes so much worse and heartbreaking I do love that kind of writing that yana is doing with Disney twisted game she also doing the whole plot and character designs as well and the direction that she going for the conclusion for twisted wonderland might be a plot with that might be similar to the twin ciel revealed cause a lot people are theory’s that the head mage of the school might be main bad guy in story probably cause at end of each chapter for the villains all the negative emotion takes over their body and ‘overblot” which they get covered in ink and their outfits changed to suit their villain inspiration and all 7 dorms leaders have been revealed and they look so good and at end of the battle with them with the main player and characters fighting of then defending the head mage don’t not want people to know on what just happened and keep is out of sights of other to not get in trouble and throughout the game us as the player we tell him if he has found a way to get us home but always said as if he’s not done it yet and don’t not want us to go back to out home wants us the fix the other students “problems” so that all so far but I’m really excited to find what will happen at then if we get to choose to stay of go back home our world but it will be bittersweet also a few days ago in Japan they had a Disney twisted wonderland festival with the students voice actors and revealed what coming up and the Japanese server with event cause they had a event called “lost in the book with stitch” and a new 3rd Halloween event coming this year to the Japanese server with 2 figures and people theory’s that it the fox and cat from Pinocchio and a 4th set of birthday cards with a collection of new birthday card for the characters with a Disney 100th anniversary collaboration design with 30s Disney art style and the new card with the a magical cat that stays with us the player named grim he’s getting his own SSR card also with 100th anniversary Disney collaboration that card having grim and Mickey Mouse in the same card art with wearing the same outfits a white tailcoat, white vest, white gloves and light navy pants and Mickey being seen through the mirror in the main player bedroom in their own dorm were both grim and main player live along with ghosts being inspired by a Disney short of Mickey called “thru the mirror” and also probably the beginning of the game “epic Mickey”

@@earlgreymilktae haha, I would've loved that! People kept saying things like "I love your Ciel cosplay" but I couldn't tell if they meant real ciel or thought I was just missing an eyepatch lol. I did make sure to part my hair like r!ciel and wear the outfit he wore when he first came to the manor, but unless I had an undertaker with me, that was all I could really do :)

Right. I'm glad to be able to flue this fandom obsession again, hahaha. Since I am a 00's baby qnd came into consciousness around 06 and didn't get into the fandom until 2010/11 its so intresting to see the 'early days'. As for the point about Bard simps.... I do say the closer I get to middle age, the more appreciation I have for him, lol. As for the sebciel pairing... this is something I have just come to accept within this fandom, fangirl gonna fangirl and such. Let's say the exclude tags on AO3 is a god send sometimes hahaha.
I also do understand why there is so much contempt today for the non-can episodes. I feel like Black Butler has such a solid plotline within the manga, and so many more people would be raving about it if it had gotten an anime adaptation after 2016 and it followed all the manga. It deffo would have some of the hype which followed shows like Moriarty the Patriot.
Also... can we get love for all the AMVs and CMVs to Angle with a shotgun for this fandom hahahaha.

This fandom has so many iconic amvs/cmvs! Honestly, I get it when it come to Bard simps, he's so cool! I also agree that being able to filter out tags is the biggest blessing of modern internet!
If Black Butler had more anime following the manga, or a total reboot around the time that the fandom was still thriving, it would have more of a presence today.

Very interesting video!! I actually got into Black Butler in May this year, and it's safe to say that I got a little... obsessed LOL (I watched all of the anime's content, for better or worse, read the manga up to volume 32, and even checked out The Most Beautiful Death in The World)
So it was really cool to learn about how this fandom used to be, as a newcomer! I'm glad there are people making content about this franchise despite how old it is, and it's a funny coincidence how I seemingly picked the best time to get obsessed with it, since there seems to be less rampant transphobia/homophobia nowadays, and it's getting a whole new season soon too :D

I've never been truly part of the Black Butler fandom due to not speaking English back when I consumed it, but I watched all of the anime there is and started reading the manga back in the day - the announcement of the new season has inspired me to try and catch up on the manga 😊

thank you for making these videos, you put quite a lot of effort in them and genuinely talk about this story with nuance and depth it deserves, and i absolutely love deep dives.i just want to say how immensely i appreciate your black butler videos, cause it's safe to say how starved i am for some youtube black butler content, as i am once again in my black butler era and i always want to discuss about it. the fandom is greatly diminished when it comes to internet presence. i have been watching and reading bb since early 2009, so i literally feel geriatric as I've been here almost since the beginning and i'll be 28 soon. honestly i left the fandom a long time ago in the sense that i didn't participate except reading the manga, that's only thing I've been actively following for the past however many years. (and the book of adaptations of course, our rain in the desert). I watched whenever something bb related was released, but i was far removed from the fandom. But i find myself drawn back in, especially due to the weston arc anime announcement, and now i really appreciate these look backs on this history as everything does feel nostalgic, however cringe fail it has been lmao. It certainly marked a big part of my adolescence and i'll probably be here until the bitter end of this story.

Yeah, sometimes the best thing you can do for yourself and your love for a piece of media is to take a step back from the fandom. But I'm glad you're finding joy in it again! I've been into Black Butler for so much of my life, it's kind of wild to think about how long I've been here.
I have a few drawings at home that I did in my spare time of Ciel, Sebastian and the Grim Reapers Ronald, Grell, William and Undertaker and I also own the Black Butler seasons 1-3 dvds and the book of murder and the book of the Atlantic film dvds.
Just leaving my commentary here as a fan of Black Butler since 2014. This is exactly the kind of content my soul craves while we wait for the public school arc to be animated (honestly, STILL recovering from that news lol. I was literally rewatching season 1 due to, as you said, nostalgia, when the trailer dropped.)

The absolute whiplash between Sebastian threatening to eat Ciel in Green Witch, to mysterious blood collection, to… the Phantom Five boy band. Every time I reread those chapters, I laugh at the lyrics they’re singing because they’re so obviously written by Sebastian.
Ah. The Black Butler decline/dark ages. I remember wanting to see Book of Atlantic in theaters but the nearest one showing it was like 40 minutes away from me, and I didn’t have a car or friends who also liked the show. And then the manga slowed down after the twin reveal. The amount of flashbacks, while enlightening, could rival those of Naruto Shippuden. Pretty much the only interesting thing in the fandom at that time was theories on O!Ciel’s real name and memes lol
I really hope we can get an official release date for S4 soon. I hope it can introduce new fans to the show, which I still think is underrated for the amount of mystery and humor it offers.

I'm of the few people that are dying for BB content. I joined in 2015 and have been obsessed ever since. I feel blessed to have lived through that peak era especially since I was in middle school during that time. And that time I told everyone I was 'married' to Sebastian and I would take his last name. (Which I still use and people still know me by because I don't like my legal last name).
The most I miss were Sebastian headcanons on Tumblr. I still have my 36k word Google doc of all the headcanons I agreed with that I have put into a list. And early this year I began an Obsidian vault so I can see the connections built of his personality. I also made my own fanfics with my OCs.
My obsession never died 😂
I would also like to say that as I've grown older my use of BB has changed. Much like Ceil Ive had a shit childhood. When I was younger, I used it as a form of escapism. Now I'm endulging it as a special interest, looking at the deeper personality of each character.
I get that! My relationship with this series has changed a lot over the years, and in a sense it matches my growth as a person over time. There's also just a lot to unpack and look at when it comes to analyzing the characters!

This was a super neat and informative video! I joined the fandom back in 2014, I managed to watch the 2 seasons and catch up on the manga right before book of circus aired. (And it was pure magic watching it weekly :'>) I always wanted to know what the climate of the fandom was before that time, so this was a treat! It was also such a blast of the past seeing you guys cover the later periods (both during the highs and lows of the fandom). I made some shitpost and art throughout the years here and there, but mostly I was lurking through the black butler tag on tumblr. Also!!! The animations between the segments were really nice! Great job! (I got a tiny bit emotional/sentimental watching the last one)

I haven't watched the whole video yet, but I already have my two cents to add.
1) I have discovered Black Butler in 2013 after I have discovered Pandora Hearts in 2011. Back then, I had access only to the first season and was thoroughly unimpressed. The characters were very two-dimensional, especially Sebastian, and the fact that everyone around me hailed him as the second coming of sexy annoyed me to no end. Only after reading a couple of AU fanfictions where Sebastian was a human and was either operating his own mafia ring or being in similar dangerous, high-stakes, and demanding "lines of work" while helping Ciel to exact revenge did I aquire interest in the BB world at large and started liking Sebastian as a character more in particular. Now, I am a certified fangirl. I have also read some very unsettling BB fanfictions that have colored my perception of BB and made me desparately wish for it to become darker. I am glad that the latest manga chapters have the same dark tone as these fanfictions now.
2) I have never been an active fan in the fandom due to my dislike of both my native and the English-language fandoms' hatred towards female characters, especially Beast, whom I love with my whole heart, and Lizzy. I don't have a tumbl and you can't pay me enough to start using twitter or ticktock, so I was completely in the dark about the fandom developing there. Nowadays, I still continue consuming BB content through fanfictions, which makes me both detached from the canon and never hungry for content.
3) Nothing to do with BB this time, but it's interesting how most of the people I know absolutely hate 2018. It has also been a very difficult time for me, and I am glad that year is over.
Pandora Hearts is so good, and I've found that a lot of people who like one do or will like the other! Sometimes fanfics are just so so good. I have also seen a bit of really dark fanfics in the fandom.
FANDOM MISOGYNY IS SO REAL AND ANNOYING! Luckily I've curated a space that loves and appreciates the female characters, and it's so fun.
2018 was just ROUGH! I turned 21 that year, so it probably had more to do with my stage of life than the year.
On a completely separate note, Aldred is pretty much the Hebrew word for vampire/leech, so the main character's name in Rust Blaster is just vampire XD

I stood on the hill that I was never going to get into this fandom for YEARS, because all I knew about it was SebaCiel. (Which, for some reason, I thought was canon?) And then I started playing Twisted Wonderland two years ago and found out the creator was the same person. And then Danny Motta (one of my favorite TH-cam creators) started posting Black Butler reaction videos. And then Negative Legend (another of my favorite creators) posted two Black Butler analysis videos. I started reading the manga about three months ago and I love it now lol.
Edit: I forgot to add that I only gave in and started watching the anime a couple weeks ago because Jonah Scott, my favorite voice actor, announced he’s in the Public School Arc lol. (He plays Greenhill.)

I really liked your video i've never been part of the fandom so it was interesting to see how it was, I was however a fan of a series albeit I went from season 1 and 2 fan to a biggest hater after reafing the
manga, i love it I love every character( other than anime original ones, especially angela and pluto) but I refuse to interact with ao3 black butler section for now as I don't really like most popular ships. I feel so bad for curry arc it was done so dirty I would be the first person to sing a petiton for a remake of the first 2 arcs
That's fair. You can use the filtering system on AO3 to exclude the ships you don't like, but that won't be much help if there's just no fics for what you do like. Honestly, fandom can be so fun and exciting at times, but sometimes a series is best enjoyed alone or with your friends. I will say, I think most people became haters for seasons 1 and 2 after reading the manga, but I've recently started re-watching season 1, and it's actually pretty good, especially if you treat it as it's own thing.

Bloody brilliant video absolutely adored it! Wow it's crazy everything that happened. My history with Black Butler is a bit muddled back before it was translated into English in 2006-07 I remember reading and finishing the Red Butler arc and then I wasn't able to read anymore. I watched the anime back in 2012 I think. I enjoyed the first season for the most part yet felt like there was plot inconsistency and weird choices. And the second one made me upset since I didn't like the ending and had mixed feelings about it as a whole. Then I found out the 2nd Season was not canon and then Book of Circus was announced. I went back to read the first chapters again before that arc and found myself loving the manga version so much and rediscovering why I enjoyed the series.
I held off reading the Circus arc in the manga because I wanted to watch Book Of without being spoiled. I did end up reading the Atlantic Arc and onward before the movie after watching the Book of Murder Ova because I was heavily invested by this point. After watching all of it I grew to love Black Butler more and more. I had enjoyed the series before but it wasn't until that point that I became a heavy reader and watcher. I loved the dark and deep story with all its serious and comical moments. All the characters were so great as well. It was so different from the anime and I appreciated how real it could get. I absolutely loved the genius of the Phantomhive Twins reveal. Some people might have been upset but I loved the reveal, all the foreshadowing made sense now, and I craved whenever a new chapter came out revealing more of the backstory of the twins. It endeared me to our Ciel more and more. I continued reading the series although the drought, smaller chapters, and lack of new content has kept it kind of an up and down indulging. I'm so happy that a new season is premiering next year.
Thank you so much both of you for sharing your time with the series and bringing up so many things I didn't know back when I was a casual fan. I definitely was among the crowd reading Tumblr, TH-cam and OC stories I still do to be honest but I'm much more selective.
I love your deep dives and the looks into everything so far. I'm now a huge fan of KuroMyu because of you too ha ha. ;) Here's to hoping for a great future for Black Butler and people can find the genius that is the series once more.

It was really fun looking into what the fandom was like before I joined it, and how it had been during the time periods where I was less involved. I think many fans ended up watching the first two seasons of the anime before realizing how non canon it all was! So it's confirmed that Season 4 will be the Weston School Arc? Don't care much about the yaoi rumors, but didn't Yana write BL mangas under pseudonym then? I thought it was confirmed. The thing about Yana writing BL under a pseudonym is most likely true! Many mangaka get their start with things like BL. However, I haven't been able to verify the information, so I don't feel right presenting it as with out a doubt true.
Yes, the promotional art that we've seen for the anime includes the Weston house symbols, or the campus grounds! I'm so excited to see how it turns out!

It's the two pieces of art work that accompanied the announcement! The one of Ciel and Sebastian standing atop a building at night, and the one with Sebastian looking in a mirror on a stripped wall. The last one has mostly been attached to Crunchyroll's announcement

The shonen series I'm currently on this moment are the Jojo's Bizarre Adventure sagas having just finished Phantom Blood, Battle Tendency and Stardust Crusaders. I know there's the future for Diamond is Unbreakable, Stone Ocean and Golden Wind.

I use to own a Jacket of Kirito's Fairy Dance gear buy then I ended up donating it to a charity because the nylon jacket with no zip did not seem to fit my body well. I've only seen cosplayers of Sao, Dragon Ball, Zelda, Dc comics, marvel, Disney and Fate Stay Night characters at London Comic Conventions.

The only A1 pictures animes I've seen and finished over the years are Fate Apocrypha, Persona 5, Asterisk War, Sword Art Online, Fate Grand Order, Erased, Black Butler and Blue Exorcist though I ended up despising Rin Okumara after a 2nd watch of Blue Exorcist and preferred his brother Yukio Okumaru and there a few A1 pictures series that I gave up with but I might get back to finishing in the future except Fairy Tail and those A1 pictures series are Seven Deadly sins, Your Lie in April, Kaguya Sama Love is war and Magi The Labyrinth of Magic. I know also there's the mecha Aldnoah Zero, Darling in the Franxx and action sci-fi 86 that have also piqued my interests.
Cloverworks is split off of A-1, and they do SpyXFamily, which I've been enjoying, and the animation is pretty nice! I didn't realize all of those animes came from the same studio that produced Black Butler, that's so neat! Darling in the Franxx was fun, but I didn't finish it. It got a bit weird in a less fun way towards the end.
About the Ciel themed swimwear at 18:30, was it really part of the season 1 merchandise from 2008-09? I thought it was from 2015 or something, so could you please clarify that for me because I'm a bit confused.
I know they've sold that bikini for a long long time. It may have come out later than I thought, but it is based on the green outfit from season 1.

I've been to Church camp, one of the most fun experiences I've had.
I don't care that Season 2 was awful, I still loved it and I love villains of that season, season 1 villains were mostly lame.
I still laugh at 'still a better love story than Twilight' jokes, I had three sisters, and they all watched those movies a lot.
The bitchslap was one of the best parts of Season 2.
You and Null play off each other really well (not sure if I've said that already).

I still consider you a big name in the Black Butler fandom, even back when you did those funny non-shippy Ciel, Alois, Elder Ciel, N. McMillian skits.
I can't remember when I became a Black Butler fan, I remember that I used to think anime was all/or mostly cartoon porn before some of my church-going friends started talking about how much they loved it.
I traditionally have kept my tumblr to myself, although I've been muddying the water by sharing my videos with the black butler community on tumblr. If you've found it, feel free to follow, but I probably won't publicly be like "HEY THIS IS ME GO FOLLOW". I reblog a lot of stuff that isn't always related to the things I'd talk about here, so I don't think many people would enjoy the minecraft youtuber spam on their dashboards.
I'm glad you've had good experiences with church camps! I think they can really be a mixed bag. I've got good memories from them, but they were less about church, and more about building community and just being a 3 day summer camp. (although there was church talk in the evenings to keep it "on topic")
Seasons 1 and 2 of the anime are what they are. I don't think I can ever bring myself to actually hate them since they're what got me into the series in the first place! I feel like many fans feel the same way to be honest.
asdfasdf "better love story than Twilight" jokes were EVERYWHERE, especially in anime fandom at the time. Some of them are funny, but I think that's because the ones I've seen would be for stuff like Vampire Knight, talking about the incest. And it's like ????? You think THIS is better than Twilight? I read this horrifying account a few months back that a mother shared about her child being groomed and abused in an anti-shipping circle by a manipulative adult who was sharing NSFW content with minors so that they knew what to report online, but like, that's still weird and still sending inappropriate things to kids? It's a really toxic space when you get really into it.
My parents watch my videos, and show the ones not talking about the plot of Black Butler to my nephew adfasdfasd. They like to see what I'm doing and spending so much of my time on!
OOH! Ciel cosplayers. It's mostly just a product of late 2000s con culture. But I've read accounts of Ciel cosplayers being harassed, literally pulled into games by con staff who wanted to "make Ciel smile", and just a complete lack of boundaries. However, that was an issue with cons as a whole for a while when it came to cosplayers (this is the yaoi paddle era after all, where people where going up to strangers cosplaying characters they liked and hitting them with these wooden paddles)
I did musical theater my last two years of high school! We did Disney musicals, but they were so fun! I've also had a long stint as a broadway fan, but I'd probably be considered a fake fan since I've only gotten into the stuff that was super main stream and trending online around 2017 when everyone was getting into musicals (Heathers, Be More Chill, Hamilton)

OH NO! I actually didn't know that anime was considered porn because I learned about anime from some kids at my school, who were really into Vampire Knight and Death Note. It took me a few years before I learned about hentai and the more NSFW animes

The only Shounens I've watched all the way through here are Dragonball, Fullmetal Alchemist and D.Gray man. Some I have given up on and may never see again because I don't like animes with episode numbers in the thousands and millions including One Piece and Fairy Tail and Yuyu Hakusho. Naruto on the other hand barely ever aired here in Great Britain and I know that before Kazuto's parents got killed in a car accident and Kazuto himself got adopted by his Kirigaya relatives Kazuto was known as Kazuto Narusaka which would of made his Portmanteau Naruto though is what I learned from Sao Unital Ring book 1 anyway I was never really into Ninjas so Naruto as an anime is a no go for me too. These days I prefer the Dragonball Manga books over the Dragonball anime because the Dragonball books have no filler and are shorter than the 500+ Episode anime is.
That's fair! I've been a fan of many different shounens, and while a lot of battle shounen are pretty similar, there's some gems in there in my opinion!

I'd say for the most part, fandoms can still be a fun and great community! Just like back then, it's all in how your curate your space. A more active fandom would still have that huge community and togetherness feeling that Black Butler fandom used to have. You just have to find your group! There's still pockets of wonderful community out in the Black Butler fandom, and I do hope you can find a group that feels like old fandom to you.
(I'm sorry to hear you've been beat up and spit on??? I'm not sure if the post traumatic ship disorder bit is a joke or not. People don't like that ship for a lot of reasons though, and I'll admit often times people make a lot of unfair assumptions about people who do ship that. But it does invoke a lot of strong feelings in people who have had negative experiences regarding that ship)
