Good for you! It is not how much or how little money you make/receive but how wisely you use that money that counts in the long run. Already having experience living frugally will be a blessing if the economy collapses. You already know how to live on very little -- many do not. There are many spendthrifts out there who make a large income yet have no savings, no food storage, do not own outright anything of lasting value, are deeply in debt and completely spend every paycheck each month. The people who have not had the foresight and self-discipline to gradually build up their emergency supplies while also paying down their debts will be hurting if they lose their source of income or if power grid goes down and their credits cards and debit cards cannot be used.
Just thought it was funny at 4:23 when you mention bugging in for a pandemic during marshall law. So often we use these phrases that at first look seem very 'doom and gloom' and people dismiss it as nonsense. Well, here we are in the midst of Coronavirus approaching lockdown, and its not so crazy now!
Every time I got to Sportsman's Warehouse or Walmart to do my shopping, I grab a pack of Mountain House or Backpacker's Pantry. I am building up my preps bit by bit. There is always that situation I have to head for the tall timber. I heard I can use the preps for cash.
I finally found some Mountain House at Walmart this evening. As it lasts until 2050, I’ll be sure to include it in my will. I wonder who I’d bequeath it to since, it’s not likely I’ll be here, even by the BB date.😂
When your starving it tastes great. That reminds me of a story that my Dad used to tell when he was in the war WWII. He was 18 and one half in the South Pacific Islands, The soldiers were going through the chow line and one on the guys would say,"What kind of sh!t are we eating today cookie?"The cook became insulted and responded,"This is good food , "I better not hear you call it sh!t again!" The very next day they are going through the line and that Soldier says,"Well, what kind of sh!t are we having today? Quickly he recovered with,"It's sh!t but it's good sh!t!" Everybody laughed including the cook.
Great, now I'm hungry hahaha, I gotta try some of these 🤘 I agree that granola and blueberries breakfast is delicious, i've also tried the Backpackers Pantry pad thai and was blown away at all the flavor; that crystallized lime is deinitely a plus. Can't wait to give Happy Yak a try soon and support a smaller freeze-dried food company. Thanks for another great freeze-dried food video, man! Have a great rest of your day.
Yes and no, more important in winter time. If you are burning a lot of calories and eating 4-5 of these meals a day to keep up with your caloric demand and each one has 70% plus of your daily sodium intake, it will catch up. You don't want to be retaining mass amounts of water in the winter time.
Backpackers Pantry Pad Thai With Chicken is my FAVORITE freeze-dried food, and I've tried every variety of Mountain House, Backpackers Pantry, and Alpine Aire. It is really spicy which is great after a hard day backpacking. Mountain House Spaghetti With Meat Sauce also excellent. Mountain House is by far the best brand overall. I'm looking forward to trying Happy Yak.
Backpackers Pantry Pad Thai is THE BOMB! Did a three day kayak trip last summer (2019) and had it for dinner the first night! Was sad when it was gone.
Hey Nate, I have been buying the Mountain House meals for quite sometime, mostly based on your and other u-tubers I watch recommendations. Also, tried the Peak refuels after one of your episodes. I had the Chicken Pesto, Breakfast skillet and the Beef Pasta Marinara. All 3 were good, but the Chicken Pesto was the tops and the only one of the 3 I would buy again. I felt, based on cost to pleasure to eat, Mountain House comps to those 2 were the better value. That is just my opinion, and I admittedly have the palate of a brick, so keep that in mind. Thanks again for your efforts, i always appreciate your shows. Happy holidays to you all, Robert
Another great video! I do agree to start with your own prepping with your rice and beans and then follow up with your freeze dried foods for a backup. I like mountain house personally.
Watching this in April 2021, he mentions that freeze dried foods could be a good option is you are hunkering down if there's a pandemic... This video was on my youtube recommendations at just the right time!
I think Mountain House tastes the best. But Nutrient Survival is definitely the best for you. It gives you more nutrition than most of the foods we eat day to day.
I had my first Mountain House ice cream sandwich tonight and it was for sure a 10/10. I don’t think I’ll be able to stockpile them because I’ll just keep eating them.
I wonder what our ancestors did for calorie counting? Oh yeah they hunted. I wonder what they did for nutrition and daily vitamins...oh yeah they harvested. I wonder if they had diabetes? Oh wait, not until 1950s when McDonalds showed up :)
First time seeing your video Bro, been offline for a long time due to illness, good to see new backpacking foods available since I first started many years ago. Great vid man. Paul
There is the 3rd type of freeze dry, plain ingredients. Meats, veggies, fruits, dairy... all in steel cans with like 25 year shelf life. You will get very tired of mountain house stroganoff in very short order. Being able to make different combinations for the long term I believe is important.
You missed a whole other category. The companies that sell freeze-dried food that you can buy in bulk and prepare yourself from Thrive and Honeyville. When I go backpacking I prep my meals from their ingredients.
Those indeed sound like good things, though how long do those ingredients last once the package is opened, or are the packaged in manageable portions ? ... but after doing a 100days of food for $100,- having something like this in say 'bulk chicken' and 'bulk beef', means you can eat quite a variety of full meals (say pasta chicken, rice beef, pasta beef, rice chicken, possibly do some stews also (with all having some different type of bean of fresh garden produce). And while you still be eating the same things, when combined with different spices your actual experience will be that you are eating very varied. And i sort of know this from experience, when i lived on my own after my study years, i ate basically the same things every week, so 7 different meals in the week, but those same 7 throughout the year. That felt very varied, and if you look at your actual food every day, it's likely that for most of the ingredients you use, this will actually be the case for most people...
@@dutchcourage7312 Once a package is opened you can reseal it {vacuum) in mylar bags or glass jars in smaller portions or you can use oxygen absorbers and they will stay fresh for years. The items vary as far as how long some are a few weeks others are for a whole year from date opened. I have found that if you open them and put them into glass jars with a moisture absorber they keep quite well. They are a lot less expensive than Mountain House and you can control what goes in your dish. They also carry spices and premade sauces, cheese and a variety of veggies.
@@phebefriddle9133 I deffo liked this, actually mentioned this option to somebody else in these comments, because it seems to pair so well with the rice/beans/pasta options for as far as making a more complete meal out of those ^^
Yes! I just had to scroll through the comments and see if anyone else mentioned this! It would be pretty easy to buy the individual ingredients and put together your own Mylar packs with individual meals. I don’t like a lot of salt and get grossed out very easily by ready made foods. I do 99% of my own cooking because I am quite picky. You just have to take simple meals that you like, but the freeze dried ingredients, mix it up and try it out. If you cook I don’t think it would be difficult to figure out the proportions of freeze dried ingredients and spices. Even if you don’t cook, I have no doubt the company has recipes available on the packages or their web site. I am sure it will be cheaper, and you get exactly what you want.
Stretch your MH into a couple meals and lower your sodium intake by only pouring half the pouch out and mix with instant rice. Then add rice to MH pouch to cook later with the other half
Nice video. I keep a fairly varied reserve in my pantry. Frozen food like moose, salmon vegetables, etc. Canned meals. Freeze dried soups and stews by Toro. Freeze dried rations by REAL. I really like the REAL arctic field rations.
Thanks for this video , so far I've considered can foods , now I'm going to be adding dried foods . I watched the movie Panic in year zero , the movie was made 60 years ago , but it's amazing how they figured out how to make their food, safe . Please keep up these great videos .
Those expensive instant/freeze-dried meals as well as expensive MREs, trail bars and salted nut mixes make quick high-energy meals when you are busy rescuing people from flood waters or pulling survivors from collapsed buildings and just do not have the time or energy to cook regular meals. The high salt content of these foods is also a blessing when you are doing a lot of sweating while doing physically demanding tasks. By Day 4 of a prolonged disaster that may last multiple weeks or months, you are better off using less expensive ingredients (wheat, oats, pasta, dried beans, powdered milk...) plus a sparing amount of some expensive ingredients (Ova-Easy, freeze-dried cheese and meat, freeze-dried veggies, freeze-dried fruit) and making the time and effort to cook regular meals.
There are a few preppers who are making their own. They get individual ingredients. They assemble dried meals in jars and in their own bags. The key is they precook pasta and rice then dehydrate. Just search "make your own camping meals".
@@littleoldlady4154 I prefer to wait until I want to prepare the emergency meal before I start measuring and mixing together the "instant" ingredients. The thing about homemade instant meal mixes is the different ingredients in a mix can have vastly different shelf lives -- the dry ingredient that goes rancid first will spoil the entire mix if the homemade mix is not used soon enough. I would only make up some instant meal mixes in advance from the single ingredients in #10 cans or Mylar bags if I wanted to take those instant meals with me on a camping trip in the very near future. And I would only do this if I did not have enough pouches of Mt. House instant meals. I do have a collection of "gifts in a jar" and "make-a-mix" recipes as well as cookbooks that only contain recipes that use long-term food storage ingredients, but I choose to not pre-assemble meal mixes.
It is said that the Lewis and Clark expedition from St Louis, MO to the WA/OR coast, carried 50+# packs, carried a canoe, their rifles, ... and such food and water stuffs. They wrote that each person ate 5+# of meat everyday (full fresh venison on the hoof). So they would scarf all these foods with relish and finish everything up.
Thanks for the reviews. I like to buy the big cans and make my own dishes and vacuum seal them then I know how much salt is in the meal. I like to have a bit more protein also.
I am trying to do the same thing today. I bought Burger, chicken , potatoes slices , and peppers. And a few for flavoring Mixing them up to create some kind and of menu. Did you add any seasonings like dried basil and oregano? We can’t have those high salt meals either. Am facing my own fears of failing after I bought all these. But I tell myself. “Just try. And we can get better next time.” How did yours turn out?
@@parentrescue8982 I keep the seasoning separate and add them in amounts I feel like at the time. You will do just fine. We fail when we first try to do anything just watch a baby try to learn to walk. In the end you will do well.
@@lyndabuchholz1216 it turned out great. I tried three meals and had my favorite, but they were all good. I will pack seasonings to add later on. Thanks
Buy a freeze dryer from Harvest Right and you can make the meals for a lot less money. The freeze dryers have come down in price over the past few years. When I first looked at them at the fair they were over five thousand dollars.
Here is a real secret to making these foods taste decent. Get a bottle of msg and sprinkle that stuff on everything. Keep a bottle in your bug out bag and you can eat pretty much anything. Also even if ya dont smoke get a few packs for christ sake.... Nobody ever shows that in their bag but its the number 1 way to break the ice alot of the time.
I haven't tried nearly as many freeze dried meals as you have, but the best one I've had so far has been the Kung Pao Chicken from Alpinaire. Also I like the chili mac with beef from Wise better than Mountain House. The flavor and seasoning is better and the noodles are the small Kraft type noodles so they rehydrate better.
Rice and red lentils for complete protein. simple as that. dont get beans, take too long to boil and waste water since you have to leech them over night.
Scripture tells the last days will have horrific famine. 1 Year supply of food for each person in your home, and live on some acreage with a rich topsoil you can grow your own food.
I am now eating my Wise food buckets, (mistake), and have bought Mt. House #10 cans, (mistake corrected). I believe that freeze dried foods will be the currency to have during martial law or pandemic, (everything you said CP). Next purchase Coleman grill, water cans, and gas cartridges, and BBQ lighters. Thanks CP.
I've tried the MH Breakfast Skillet. Wrap it in a tortilla with some hot sauce and you have an excellent meal! I've also tried the MH lasagna and the MH Chili Mac. Both are pretty good. I make a dehydrated version of the Chili Mac that is just as good. I was looking at the Happy Yak Pad Tai but I thought it was too bulky. The Happy Yak Thai Chicken Curry soup is very good!!!
My biggest concern with preps is my young autistic son (soon to be 6). Very good particular as usual common in autistic children. Pizza, cheese burgers, French fries, chicken nuggets, macaroni & cheese, and now sesame chicken. We are a bug in first vs bug out scenario. I do prepare for the bug out but that’s secondary. A total grid down scenario also concerns me with clothing a growing child. But nutrition concerns are primary.
I usually go with Mountain House and re-hydrate in the re-sealed pouch. I also double up on the wait time. I've found and heard from others that if you don't allow it to completely re-constitute in the pouch, that process will continue in the digestive system risking constipation and who needs that. Have you tried the MH seafood chowder? It's basically clam chowder with salad shrimp mixed in but tastes great.
The best tasting food I have ever eaten was mountain house Mexican rice at the end of a LONG hike. Second best was beans, rice and peanut sauce at the end of a long day of building a house. It’s all about how tired you are lol!
Nice! I'll be doing another order soon! Btw are you doing a Christmas sale similar to black Friday? My cousin tried to place an order but something happened and he was unable to complete his order. He said he did but it didn't go through.
Thank you for this top 10. I was so overwhelmed what to buy. I am building our emergency bug in pantry and I don't know which ones i should get. I hope you will do a boxing day sale so I could buy bulk. 😊
If you want to have a complete list, you missed Packit Gourmet. I have never had Happy Yack, but without knowing anything about HY, PG is hands down my favorite!

I like Mountain House and keep about 20 packs on hand at all times. As mentioned below, the breakfast scramble is very tasty!
Great Video. Thanks for these comparisons.
🥰
Nice video.
I keep a fairly varied reserve in my pantry.
Frozen food like moose, salmon vegetables, etc.
Canned meals.
Freeze dried soups and stews by Toro.
Freeze dried rations by REAL.
I really like the REAL arctic field rations.
Mountain House makes up about half of my food prep and it is much easier to put into food rotation use when needed just like spam
Higher sodium intake increases the body's water retention which may be helpful for situations in which water is being rationed.
Thanks for this video , so far I've considered can foods , now I'm going to be adding dried foods . I watched the movie Panic in year zero , the movie was made 60 years ago , but it's amazing how they figured out how to make their food, safe . Please keep up these great videos .
Canned foods are fine, you're probably not a backpacker.
@@ChrisGilliamOffGrid I'm 70 years old , so my back packing will be a grocery cart , with a cat siting on top!
Watching "men who built America as we speak." They definitely had food.
"Remember in Back to the Future when they go back to the Future?" My favorite line in this video. 😅
I put those breakfast Skillets from Mountain House on tortillas yum
That 9 dish caloric spread at the end you say a working survivor will need is what I eat in a whole week - but I'm not active at the moment.
I like the packs that have all the spices separated. I can't have spicey stuff but it seems like it's in everything!
I'm the opposite but I agree. As long as they throw in a hot pepper sauce packet I'm good. I have to have heat in most meals.
I brought 6 and half kg of these . I have never eaten a freeze dry meal so I am taking your word on it .
Thanks
Looking forward to trying Happy Yak. I want the best tasting, healthiest rations!
Happy Yak has been getting some good reviews. I like Mountain House also.
MH Breakfast Skillet is to die for!! Just picked up another #10 can for the stockroom.
12¢ price chopper macaroni and cheese was my staple meal all through college!
Thank You For A Great Video !!
If you want a great freeze dried dessert, try Backpacker’s Pantry Creme Brulei. It is fantastic!
Buy a freeze dryer from Harvest Right and you can make the meals for a lot less money. The freeze dryers have come down in price over the past few years. When I first looked at them at the fair they were over five thousand dollars.
Thank you for the update. Have a great day.
Just subscribed, love the vids. Keep it up, can't wait to got through the previous ones.
Here is a real secret to making these foods taste decent. Get a bottle of msg and sprinkle that stuff on everything. Keep a bottle in your bug out bag and you can eat pretty much anything. Also even if ya dont smoke get a few packs for christ sake.... Nobody ever shows that in their bag but its the number 1 way to break the ice alot of the time.
that pad thai looked great, need to try that. I'm surprised rice and chicken from mh wasn't on this list
The mountain house breakfast one is super good. One of my favorites. It has sausage and peppers in it too.
Rice and red lentils for complete protein. simple as that. dont get beans, take too long to boil and waste water since you have to leech them over night.
Love your videos so much
I cant wait to try the Happy Yak. The Pat Tai Backpacker is the bomb!!
Awesome, thanks again for posting a video👍👍
Good information. Thank you
Scripture tells the last days will have horrific famine.
Thanks CP.
Investing in the freeze dryer that you reviewed would be the perfect option
Awesome man thanks for doing these!! You should post these on 3Speak as well.
Thank you CP for the review. I now have I better idea of what I might in freeze dried foods.
First comment. Keep up the good work!
Your 2nd😂
Freeze Dry Wholesalers
Great job Nate. Try putting some of the MH Skillet Breakfast on a flour tortilla....absolutly my go-to breakfast when out there.
Steve 1989 mre info ate 50 year old peanut butter, it was fine, just needed stirred up a little.
The best tasting food I have ever eaten was mountain house Mexican rice at the end of a LONG hike. Second best was beans, rice and peanut sauce at the end of a long day of building a house. It’s all about how tired you are lol!
Cannot disagree. Cost and taste you could purchase 8 times the packages with 2X the flavors of Knox brand rice😉
The mountain house granola and blueberry, is what is in most breakfast MREs and damn is it good
We carried three things in our packs. Salt pepper and to bass o suace
Individual packs are insanely expensive.
Damn Skippy! The Blue Box, mac and cheese Rocks!
Nice! I'll be doing another order soon! Btw are you doing a Christmas sale similar to black Friday? My cousin tried to place an order but something happened and he was unable to complete his order. He said he did but it didn't go through.
Thanks for the info brother!👍
Good video. Thanks.
Biggest problem with some of those brands of freeze dried foods is their expiry dates. Some are only 5 years you tested. Others 25 years.
Thank you for this top 10. I was so overwhelmed what to buy. I am building our emergency bug in pantry and I don't know which ones i should get. I hope you will do a boxing day sale so I could buy bulk. 😊
Mountain house might taste good, but if you buy from there website, they sell your info. Recomend Patriot Pantry. Your info. is not shared
Great reviews. Thanks.
thank you for doing this review.
If you want to have a complete list, you missed Packit Gourmet. I have never had Happy Yack, but without knowing anything about HY, PG is hands down my favorite!
Love MT. House....you forgot to add those extra flavor packets... ( desiccant packets ) lol....Thanks
Pad Thai is like spread
Food ment for hiking has high salt content do to loss through sweat
