  • This is one bullsh*t metal surge protector. Or power strip. It's actually both, but it's definitely not metal. Well, some of it is metal. So watch the video already!

I found a BUNCH of still-in-box power strips at a flea market last weekend for $4 each. They were "Defiant" brand. Seemed to good to be true so I passed and did a web search on the brand, leading me here. Thanks for the honest review.

Yea I had a monster surge protector from 2011 that was all metal, heavy, really great quality that finally died on me a few weeks ago. Went to best buy and frys and all are plastic. Even the really expensive ones that are $150, $200 we're all plastic from all brands.

I am not a big laugher, but you had me going. I was at Home Depot yesterday and left drained and wondering why I ever bother with them. Thank you for this cathartic video.

Metal or plastic, all of the big box store surge protectors do not protect modern power supplies from all of the components of a surge. They all use Metal Oxide Varistors and only can wait for the voltage to reach a specific level. Then they send the energy to the ground line which can raise the potential of the neutral and it is a path back into your computer/tv via any communication ports. What kills a power supply is the dI/dt rise of current.

Great video, lousy product. Lost power in windstorm, after restored computer was still down. Looked at surge protector and saw a bunch of black char on cord and switch, but light was still on. Worst part was that there were two black marks on the rug! Scary

You can replace the outlets on the metal ones if they wear out or get broken, because they're the same thing you install in a single-gang electrical box.

All this does is make me think to all the shitty experiences I've had with Home Depot, as most recently as this past Saturday. We can't find anybody to help us, and when we no longer need help and are looking at fasteners, a dumb-founded guy goes and watches us struggle to find the right size screws, while standing there going "I dunno" when asked, repeatedly, if they had a specific type of screw, because apparently two guys well removed from high school = thieves?

On one of my recent trips there it took about 45 minutes to get 10ft of tool cord from the bulk spools. 30 minutes to find a guy, then about 15 minutes for him to find a wire cutter. In Home Depot. (I mean, he was looking for the one for employees, but I could've grabbed one from home and been back in less time.) Some of the people that work there do know their shit though. But they don't get paid enough.

Tell you what Scott, I bought my DEFIANT® Power Strip(s), so I could (uh-hum) "illegally" use it, NOT as a "RELOCATABLE" power strip, as it clearly states on the back of the unit (and what it was designed for) but as a "PERMANENT" power strip.
CASE AT HAND: As like you (I am assuming) and MANY others, I ABSOLUTELY HATE the kind of FULLY plastic power strips, that give you those FOUR VERY IMPOSSIBLE SLIDER SCREW HOLES ON THE REAR to mount the unit on a wooden plank, surface, under a table or wherever. I have NEVER EVER SEEN, IN MY WHOLE ENTIRE LIFE, ONE THAT WAS PERFECTLY MOUNTED, WITHOUT ANY GIVE-WAY, WITHOUT A BUNCH OF "JIGGLE-SLACK"! It is nearly impossible to do! It's like trying to "Pin-The-Impossible-Tail-On-The-Impossible-Donkey" on EARTH...upside down & backwards...after taking four Valiums & two long shots of J&B Blended Scotch Whisky...and doing it from MARS!!! NO CAN DO!!!
This particular version of DEFIANT® had two VERY VISIBLE screw holes seen from the FRONT; one on the upper front right hand corner and one on the lower front right hand corner. Using this form of fastening (BTW, ignoring most electrical inspection codes), by mounting a power strip DOWN from the top in a tight, "PERMANENT/UN-RELOCATABLE" fashion, no longer allows the user (or electrical code inspector or enforcer) to simply remove the power strip without ANY tools, "in-case-of-a-so-called-emergency". All those plastic power strips with those FOUR VERY IMPOSSIBLE SLIDER SCREW HOLES ON THE BACK END, are there, so the user (or electrical code inspector or enforcer) can just "smack-it-up" or "smack-it-down" and it is hence instantly "REMOVABLE", thus making it a "TEMPORARY" or "RELOCATABLE" power strip.
    (Still with me so far...???)
All to say, I must have bought, over the period of 5 years, at least five dozen of this DEFIANT® type of power strips, strictly for the "ease" of FRONTAL MOUNTING...yes I know...breaking every 110v electrical code in the book. I used to design, build & assemble radio broadcast studios, audio production facilities & recording suites (I'm "retired" now...just in case any defense attorney or workers' comp adjuster is reading this here post and wants to NAIL MY A## TO THE FRIGGIN' WALL!) and these DEFIANT® power strips went up in seconds, with two #6 sheet metal or wood screws...indeed...also purchased at "world famous" Home Depot!
Indeed, the ALL THE GREAT metal versions (made by Belkin®, Phillips®, ACE Hardware®, etc, etc, etc...) were and always had been my first choice, but in the long run, those were a bit harder to work with, as far as "PERMANENT" mounting was concerned; one had to VERY, VERY CAREFULLY remove the teeny-weeny #4 sheet metal screws from the side panels (two on the left; two on the right) then remove the full rear panel from the electrical chassis, then "PERMANENTLY MOUNT" that back panel to your surface with two #6 wood screws, then VERY CAREFULLY replace the housing chassis to the back panel and screw back in those four teeny-weeny #4 sheet metal screws; hence, now becoming a "PERMANENT" electrical fixture! The Home Depot DEFIANT® brand made it a step easier, because the "screw-down-holes" were very accessible FROM THE FRONT! That is probably why, as of 2021, those DEFIANT® models have been long since discontinued, probably for safety reasons...and for guys like me...who ever so slightly, "bent" the code rules.
OTHER THAT THAT...indeed Scott...that model from DEFIANT® distributed by Home Depot, were absolutely ALL NOT METAL, just the front housing as you so verily pointed out...the balance of the product, was indeed, good ol' fashion plastic. But for my insane, "quick, fast'n'easy, just-blast-it-in, take-the-road-less-traveled & the-path-of-least-resistance" purposes...they worked.
Thanks Scott, for your review. I respect your thoughts.

The Defiant power strip is the biggest POS power strip / surge protector I've even seen. Get this, mine is highly 'defiant' at accepting standard 2 prong cords. That's right, you can't plug in 90% of your power cords as expected. It easily accepts 3 prong. But you have to get porn star aggressive with the insertion in order for this unit to even accept a plug. Inexcusable B.S. Oh yeah, and it is mainly plastic too.

Was with you until you showed the picture of the woman with all the plastic surgery. Not cool. I know you're trying to be "edgy" and funny, but she is a human being with feelings. Just stick to the reviews, which are very good, and treat others with respect. Thanks.

Hilarious. And true. I have a few of these because of the mounting ears and the model with 10' cord, but yeah, plastic. I think HD finally got your point because these were just moved to the clearance isle and are gone from the web site. Replacement is CE brand, which truly is ALL METAL and still has ears and long cord.

$13 LOL. A McDonald's meal costs just under that. A bet that power strip lasts longer than the burger meal. Know what I mean? There is this saying about farting in the wind... I'll take 1/2 metal at $13 than full metal at $50. I just plug things into mine, not sure about you. I can't recall the last news item about power strips causing a house fire. Lastly...much ado about...nothing. I'm going to buy one (larger one) tomorrow.
