Here's an exercise I created to work on my evenness while giving both my hands and my brain a workout.
    I call it 1-2-3-4

What's your favourite drumming brain teaser?

Question. So for someone who has had no formal instruction and has never done an exercise like this, how long does it take to get from the 'frustrated... I'll never be able to get this right' stage to the 'this is so boring I need to add footwork to make it challeging' stage? Also correct me if I'm wrong but exercises like this are, in a sense, unlearning. Sort of unraveling that intrinsic 'my brain is telling me to do this' ball of yarn e.g. right foot wanting to mirror the right hand type thing thing most of us had to unlearn when we first started drumming.

This is an old video but thanks for reminding me of it...it's actually a good little teaser. think of things like this (hand builders/teasers, coordination, independence and speed) as skills you are building up through many many exercises and a lot of time. So there is no right or wrong answer. If it takes you a year then that's cool. If it takes 1 week, that's also cool.
Think about your drumming in the long term and focus on practising anything that helps you get the ideas that are in your head out easier.
I have a couple of free courses which you can do to help you decide what to practice and build your hand speed. You can find them here
