To put it across in simple terms: Derived EF Function works by deriving/calculating the EF current from vector summing the three independent phase currents. (So, it means you need only three independent phase elements in the relay) Measured EF Function works by physically creating the star point of the three independent phase currents and then making the resultant neutral current flow through a separate physical EF element(coil/ internal CT of relay) of the relay to be measured by it.(So, it means you need not only three independent phase elements in the relay, but an additional element for measuring the EF current).
