I’ve learnt more in a week from your lessons than I have in the last 10 years - thank you

Can't tell you how much that means to me. Thank you so much for letting me know.
It's this kind of thing that made me want to reboot the channel... which I did a few weeks ago. FYI - I've added new content recently, with more to come.

There are a few picking hand videos already posted that you should check out. Picking is about two things: 1) moving freely and 2) moving efficiently. Practice them each by themselves (not really possible to practice both at the same time). Picking freely will not be very efficient and picking efficiently will reduce the size of your motion. The notes that you play are not as important as the way that you play them. Hope this helps.

This is fantastic especially for an easily irate person as myself, you speak with such clarity and the advice is bloody brilliant :)

ive been playing for 30+ years with nerve damage to both hands that makes playing very painful this has made frustration a major part of my trying to improve but i will never quit never give up!!!! even if i only end up with 1 working finger i will play slide!!!!!

Thanks for that, I have to be honest i haven't really tried learning songs, I've picked up a few well known riffs here and there, but i have recently purchased a book of songs which i'm going to get stuck into, also, i did watch one of your other videos about tension which i have found very useful. Today's practice went very well, just by the simple act of relaxing. Thank you so much for your help, and i have really appreciated your replies, Thank you!!!

Fantastic advice!! Your video was heaven sent for my 10 year old daughter. I am able to play a handful of chords and keep up with the songs she likes. I'd like to pass what little I know with her, but at times, she does get a bit frustrated. As we watched it she realized that she wasn't alone. Thanks so much for your encouraging words. ;-)

@TheKamikazie1974 As for suggestions for your daily routine, are you learning or writing any songs? It's great that you're working on chords, scales and theory but are you applying it to anything? You might want to consider going one day on what you're already doing, then one day on application... writing or learning songs.

Thanks for commenting. It's great to hear that you don't get frustrated, but lots of other people do and it can really get in the way of getting better. In no way am I trying to say that this is some kind of magic shortcut to being a great guitar player, only that if you get out of your own way (assuming that you're actually in your own way) that you can get better faster AND enjoy yourself.

@TheKamikazie1974 That's a tough one to put up for general consumption because everyone will have a different daily routine depending on what their goals are.
With that in mind... let's focus on you for the moment. What would you like to accomplish (realistically) in the next 6-12 months with the guitar? How much time do you have available per day to practice?

i'm 13 and i've only been learning for about 2 months, i get really frustrated and upset because i feel like i'm never going to be good enough, i an leaning back in black for school and it goes ok until the 2 4 2 5 2 6 2 7 part, because i have really bad coordination, but your advice really helped me, thank you so much :-)

I started guitar at 12 and i swear I quit playing every other year, just to pick it up again. lmao. But one of the most important things I've learned was not to set your bar too high. And don't listen to the technical stuff too much.

I think one aspect of my playing that frustrates me, is my pinky finger not resting close enough to the fret board, it tends to "stick out" a lot more than my other 3 fingers, so i'm not fretting the notes as clean or as quick as i would like, but a friend of mine told me that it's not an uncommon problem. As for practice time, I have really started to knuckle down the last month or so,about an hour a day, 45 mins playing scales/chords, then 15 mins theory, currently learning notes on fretboard.

@TheKamikazie1974 I'm going to go against conventional guitar wisdom here... but your pinky finger doesn't need to be "close enough to the fretboard." That, as far as I'm concerned, is an old wives tale. You'll improve much more focusing on free motion and staying relaxed than you will by trying to force your fingers to be "close enough to the fretboard." Economy of motion is the result of well trained, coordinated fingers, not the cause.

I really needed to see this video, I'm 37, only started playing 2 years ago, my playing isn't that good, anyway,I was really starting to become frustrated, my fingers not doing what i want them too etc, then i saw a video of some 15 yr old kid shredding like George lynch, and I really was starting to think fuck this, I'm going nowhere fast, lol, but watching this has given me some hope, so thanks alot...p.s. I know exactly what you mean with the lego story, lol
