  • Rabbi Mordechai Dubinsky hosted a young couple from Israel who were seeking treatment for the wife’s heart condition. What he didn’t expect was to also be involved in the birth of their first child. (1970s)

I'm not sure the explanation was clear. The Rebbe deliberately delayed his answer so that 40 days would pass and the halachic ruling would change.

There's a mistake in the subtitle at the beginning of the video, the father's name is Amnon, not Amos. 0:24

Beautiful message, it's always important to get a second opinion.

According to the video, one cannot get a second opinion with another rabbi. From a medical standpoint, before involving any rabbi directives, sure you can ask how many doctors you want. The miracle here may be that the original rabbi changed the directive (by grace of the Creator manifested through the rebbe) in part by the delay in the reply and part because of the particular surgeon (out of countless) that happened to have a different suggestion.

I'm from Baltimore where i was not yet frum. In the 70's and 80's, I would go over to my frum cousins' house from time to time. I remember hearing them say Reb Moshe. I had no idea who they were talking about- but i understood he must be someone important.

By waiting until 40 day mark the halachic status changed, this resulted in a new ruling from reb Moshe.

The Rebbe’s genius-“running out the clock” so it would be 40-plus days into the pregnancy.

It's Rav Moshe Feinstein (zt'l), not "Reb". He was the Posek Hador, not just a regular person.

Unlike the pope, or the president, our greatest leaders are approachable, even by the small people, Reb Moshe was KNOWN as Reb Moshe, he had no need for honouriffics, look at the artscroll biography, it is also titled "Reb Moshe"

When Rav Moshe gave his ruling it was correct. We save the mother's life at the sacrifice of the fetus. But once it was 40 days the fetus is considered a proper human being and we don't kill one to save the other. In this scenario, we can't blame either of the Rabbis since they both gave the appropriate response. But the Rebbe knew that the couple really wanted to keep this baby, and deliberately delayed the response until 40 days were up, and in a way gave them an alternative option.
