    The first thing I heard when I started watching CS players was "roundabouts are absolutely necessary, you can't manage traffic without them". One guy started the city with it, another one even had a city plan based on traffic circles. It is so stunning to see that the real problem is somewhere else - don't put all industry together, preserve space, keep landscape, preserving space, tell a story, think about citizens and their children, ... it sounds so simple and is so hard to do. Thanks a lot for this series 🙏

      Honestly it also seems so much more realistic. I've personally heavily disliked cities that were hyper focused on roundabouts, because you don't really see them that often in reality (speaking just from experience from American cities, not too sure on European cities). Whenever I see a city planner playing this game and actually using proper interchanges, thoughtfully placing intersections/stoplights, and as you said also being mindful of traffic heavy areas ahead of time... its just beautiful to watch develop because I can actually look at google maps for high population cities and think "holy smokes, it looks just like it!"

      Well honestly, it's a question of space and distance, so yes that is very much influenced by where you live. Looking at that highway intersection, that's about 250-500m wide with all the connecting roads, and increasing capacity mostly through giving every destination a separate connection and a lot of "queuing space" - you wouldn't be able to put that monster anywhere near the center of a central european city, the space demand (on very expensive land!) is just too large, it only makes sense if you're literally piping people into a city center who live about an hour away, with plenty of rural space in between.
      Just have a comparison on Google Earth if you like: Phoenix, Arizona and Munich, Germany - both similar in population (1.5 Mio in the city proper, give or take), quite open surrounding geography with a well-populated metropolitan region (Munich has about 6 million, Phoenix metropolitain about 5 million).
      Phoenix looks exactly like a mid-level city simulator player would design an efficient city I suppose; it has two interstates going through the city, also US Route 60, essentially forming a north-south, east-west cross with big highway intersections all placed right next to the city center ; in addition to this they have the 101, 202 and 303 beltways which form a sort of loop, but are all following that griddy pattern. All very rectangular and tidy. When passing through town, chances are you'll use about two main roads, maybe three.
      Munich however looks entirely organic and funky, has a concentric structure, with a ring autobahn going (almost but not entirely) around the city center , basically six actual Autobahns going from all sorts of directions to that ring autobahn, all of them also curving every which way to avoid obstacles such as towns, lakes and so on, some even crossing each other before hitting the ring, and also for the most part passing through, but none of them going entirely through to the city center as that would be a completely cost-prohibitive endeavour - they are all just connecting to the mid ring with a 1-2km diameter around the city, where traffic is then distributed onto slow roads, and in the center is the inner ring (Altstadt-Ring, old town ring), a circular road - also just as irregular as the rest, obviously - spanning the old town where the city wall had been (which is a feature present in just about all european towns and was in many cases turned into roundabouts nowadays). There was also a started outter ring between the Ring-Autobahn and the mid ring, which was modelled explicitly on American city planning examples in the 1950 and 60s (long sections of straight car-only sections, essentially much like an american belt-road), but left unfinished due to large protests of the population against the necessary destruction of existing cityscape. So yes, it's way more roundabouty and organic in that way by default, just by preservation of the preexisting structures. I think it's clear, if you want to simply pass through town you'll use about 5 different main roads, and you'll very likely have to use a navigation aid or be really good with remembering number combinations. Also, you'll very likely spend some time on the mid ring, probably not covering all that much distance in the meantime.
      In fact I'd say, city planning in European cities like that is like playing cities skyline where you can only start with a prebuilt-town, in Multiplayer with other players trying to build their settlements simultaneously in the same region, with no way to bulldoze their buildings or even your own once they've reached a certain age, except for going through a very lengthy diplomatic process, or having a natural disaster - or a war to get your city bombed a bit.
      That's why you see roundabouts in Europe more often as a way to solve traffic problems - they're definitely more space-efficient and work well for these constraints, but aren't so much necessary in American "let's build a road over there, and make it, umm, six lanes in each direction!" conditions.

    I noticed that you zone everything 4x4 when you space out buildings - for anyone that is not in the no, you can do 4x4 4x3 3x3 3x2 2x2 as well. You can do smaller shops instead of large office spaces for little neighborhood areas, so there is more variety. I space them out 1 or 2 wide or sometimes 3, for pathways. Also, if you space them enough, you can fill the rest after those spots are filled in, for more buildings as wide as those unused spaces are.

    Some notes on the roundabout roads:
    1) The 3 lane and 4 lane one-way roads came with a free update alongside Plazas & Promenades, so everyone gets those, for free!
    2) I feel like the difference between the curve tool and the free-form road tool isn't explained very well yet. Definitely not your fault, as the game tutorial is also very bad at explaining their full potential.
    You see the outline of two straight segments when you draw a curve? With the Curve tool, these "arm" segments can be different sizes and create a curve with a smooth transition between two different radii. The free-form tool will let you choose the angle more freely, but the "arms" and thus the radius will be constant. Also, with the Curve tool, the length of the first segment is fixed, while with the Freeform tool it is not. You can use the Curve tool to build fixed-size 90° curves without a scaffold, as well as easing drivers into curves, e.g. at the Parclo interchange, or U-turns, and easily creating ellipses.

    • @CityZilla
      @CityZilla  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The eco-sewage is not actually eco at all. Sure it produces half the pollution, but they also only process half the volume of sewage, so it takes 2 of them to process the same volume of sewage, meaning that, for the same volume of sewage, they produce the same amount of polition, but for more than double the cost since they are more expensive and you need 2 of them. They are completely pointless.
