Latter-day Saint Leader Appeals to Media to Make Polygamy Distinction

  • Elder Quentin L. Cook, an Apostle for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, appealed to news media today to make a clear distinction in their reports between the Church and the polygamist sect in Texas which has made headlines throughout the world.
He praised news media that are making this distinction but expressed concerns about others who are perpetuating mistruths about the Church, whose members are commonly referred to as Latter-day Saints.
Elder Cook said it is very confusing to the public when some media use "Mormon" to describe the Texas-based polygamous group which is currently under investigation for possibly incidents of child abuse. He reiterated that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, with over 13 million members worldwide, is not connected in any way to small sects that practice polygamy.
Drawing contrasts between the Church and polygamists, Elder Cook said, Church members do not live in isolated compounds, arrange marriages, dress in old fashioned clothing or wear unique hairstyles.
Rather, they are contributing members of the communities in which they live throughout the world, get married at the average age of 23, and are well educated. In fact, 60% of Church members in the United States have some college education, which is 10% above the national average.

👩🏻‍💻I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I have often made this clarification in my TH-cam posts to people who do not know or understand the policy concerning this subject. Thank you Elder Cooke for making it clear and what The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints uphold and believe in. Much love and peace. 🙋‍♀️🪔🌠🐞🥰&♎🇬🇧🇺🇲

It frustrates me how wrong the media can be sometimes, especially when it perpetuates common misconceptions about our church. I hope more news stations pick up on this and make the needed distinction between the Mormon church and those who practice something we're entirely against.

Thank you very much, Elder Cook, for clarifying this point and for your very reasonable request to the media.

This is excellent. Thank you. There is NO connection to this law-breaking group in Texas.
How would you like it if someone hijacked the name of your church, added "fundamentalist" to the front of it, and perpetuated to break the law, abuse children, and suppress human rights? This is scary, and I am glad Elder Cook has set this clear.
Thank you! I love the LDS faith, and to see it's principles and values trampled by fanatics is disgusting.

I find it interesting that people refer to these polygamist groups as "fundamentalist Mormon ". These groups are not "Mormon at all. The protestant sects that broke off from the Catholic church centuries ago are referred to as Baptist, Lutheran, Methodist, etc. Does anybody refer to them as "fundamentalist Catholics "?

Hi there, the practice of polygamy is strictly prohibited in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and has been for over a century. To learn more about the history of plural marriage in the Church, see www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/history/topics/joseph-smith-and-plural-marriage?lang=eng.

i think the use of Mormon should really go out of style with our church. that way there wont be any confusion if those other churches want to be called mormon.

The term Mormon is a derogatory term used over 100 years ago by others who sought to destroy the faith. We prefer to be called LDS or The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Please!

I am so glad to know the leadership from our church is making this distinction. Although I want to add I really wish the FLDS sect wouldn't even be refered to as Mormons or LDS without the use of Fundamentalist in big words right in front cause we already have problems with people getting confused with all the rumors about our church we don't need this added to it.

The problem is we still have Section 132, which sets forth “the principle and doctrine of their having many wives and concubines”. Until we denounce and remove this false “doctrine” we will have to answer to the accusations. Joseph gave us Section 101, the Law of Marriage (monogamy), it was replaced with 132 in 1880 with an abomination to the Lord (Jacob 2-3).

i don't agree. as much as I hate all the lies about the church, freedom of speech means freedom of speech. we can't stop them from saying that stuff, we can only correct them and provide accurate information.

Not when it’s slandering, that’s against the law (; Elder Cook was a Lawyer before he became an Apostle. He knows the law very well and knows that companies and persons are not allowed to slander others. It’s against the law and has hefty fines attached if found guilty.

I'm not Mormon... but who are you to say that someone isn't Christ-Like. That's all Christian means. It's a term for someone that belives Christ died for their sins, nothing more. There is no religion called Christian.

As members of the LDS Church we believe in Jesus Christ of the Bible. He was the Jehovah of the Old Testament prophesied of for centuries and came to earth as recorded in the New Testament--living and teaching His gospel prior to His resurrection. This certainly qualifies me as a Christian! I do not agree with tenets of the Nicene Creed, but that does not make me not a Christian!

Abraham, Moses and other prophets had to live a higher law. In the restoration the prophets Joseph Smith had to live that same law. I personally had to go to God to get confirmation of this and I now know D&C 132:66 the Lord keeps his word.

Truthfully, Kasdri, go back and study the history of Christianity, starting with the Bible itself, and you will find that LDS doctrine is in perfect harmony with original Christianity as it was taught by Christ. It is traditional Christianity that is no longer in line with, and now no where resembles original Christianity. Frankly, Peter, James, John, and the Saints in the meridian of times believed as the Latter-day Saints do.

Just to let this be known. I don't think they are mormons they may view themselves as mormons but in no way are they a part of what the real mormons believe. They may read the Book of Mormon (BOM) that doens't make you mormon. Warren Jeffs has spoke about their doctrine and it is twisted from the BOM or he has just made it up.They are Fundamentalists of the LDS church in no way should they be known as mormons since the LDS "Utah Church" is widely known for being Mormon, it causes confusion.

If an individual professes Jesus Christ to be their Lord, Savior and Redeemer, as "Mormons" do, what would the orthodoxy of christianity prefer they be called?

  • @dearlizbeth

By saying that someone, who openly and publicly announces their belief and faith in Jesus Christ, is "not a Christian" only shows spiritual immaturity and a lack of understanding of the Savior and his teachings.
"Judge not and be ye not judged."
    Need I say more?...Nuff said.

Mormons are not orthodox christian. However, they are christian with their belief of christ defined by the new testament, not the nicene creed.

Wait a minute. Academic anthropolgists and cultural ethnograhers have a practice in calling a group of people by the name that they call themselves.
    1. Aren't people of the FLDS church believers in the Book of Mormon?
    2. Didn't this sect break away from the mainstream LDS Faith?
If these people call themselves Mormon, then who are we to say differently?

Nothing like subterfuge, the hallmark of Mormon apologist. Mormons still believe in polygamy in the Celestrial Kingdom, the only difference is its not practice on earth, as in the past. Only reason they're not is 1) its against the law, 2) the feds threaten confiscation of property and no statehood for Utah.

Kasdri, maybe you should've used a screen name that matches your proper title "Self-proclaimed judge of which church is Christian." But before you change it, read John 5:22.

No connection, Elder Cook? I beg to differ.
Joseph Smith, the founder of the LDS Church started this whole ugly mess and lied about practicing it, just like the FLDS are doing today. As the LDS church based in SLC may not openly practice polygamy today, it was the leader of your church who implemented this disgusting practice, under the guise of a "revelation" from your God. The FLDS sect is doing nothing more than practicing this religion as it was "originally" setup by Joseph Smith.
