  • The UNESCO World Heritage site of Hal Saflieni Hypogeum is a large, underground burial chamber that dates from around 3300 BC. It was built in around three stages, and contained burials of many people, and may have also been used for other religious rituals. It's extremely well-preserved, as it was buried underneath the suburbs of Valletta until the early 20th century when it was discovered completely by chance!
    Many thanks also to Heritage Malta for kindly providing footage of the Hypogeum interior!

    It's always just a "temple" or "burial place", as if millenia ago people had so much spare time.

      Interestingly, the view of most modern anthropologists is that hunter-gatherers and ancient farmers probably had a lot more spare time than we do now. But clearly, projects like the Hypogeum were important enough that people devoted enormous resources, and they could only do that if things like food and shelter were comfortably taken care of. Fascinating stuff to think about, thanks for watching! 👍

    No mention of how there is a part of the structure that if someone speaks in this chamber no matter where people are in the tunnel they can hear you clearly

      Interesting, they didn't mention that on our tour! They did show us the incredible acoustics in one of the chambers though, where you could easily imagine chanting and drumming putting people into a trance-like state. Such a fascinating place! Thanks for watching 👍

    You are not in Valletta, You are in PAOLA!

      Well, the Maltese areas are so tiny in comparison to literally any other area that the mistake is easy to make. :)

    The Hypogeum is in Paola, which is not a suburb of Valletta.

      Yep, I probably should have phrased it differently, though it is only a couple of kilometres away 😉 In Australia we'd definitely call it part of the larger city. Thanks for watching! 👍

    • @WorldHeritageJourney
      @WorldHeritageJourney  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep! Dug entirely out of the ground using antlers and flint. Hard to imagine 😱 It's a beautiful spot and well worth seeing when you visit Malta - just be sure to book well in advance!

    Meanwhile if you are aware of how sound is used to cut stone... and chambers were acoustically designed for healing using sonic resonance... you laugh when they tell you it was a "burial chamber" dug with antlers and flints...

    Impossible to get tickets. Months and months in advance....

    • @WorldHeritageJourney
      @WorldHeritageJourney  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yep, it's very difficult - we managed to get tickets about six weeks in advance and then booked our trip to Malta around that! I understand the frustration, but at the same time I respect their decision to keep numbers very limited since it's such a delicate and precious environment. Thanks for watching!
