  • DARE to go where very few can physically go! Drag you mouse across your screen, or use a Google cardboard to view these enchanting subterranean man-made caves in full 360-degree 4K glory! You might even glimpse a ghost from the past! The Hal Saflieni Hypogeum is not completely off limits to visitors, but the site is so delicate, so unique, that its conservation is strict. Very small numbers of visitors are limited to very specific sections of the complex. Explore ALL this Hypogeum here, in this 360-degree short film! / stmartinsedu
Through this project, the Hal Saflieni Hypogeum is being brought to all those who have cultural heritage at heart, providing a virtual model that may be explored in its totality and to its minute detail. This work is researched and developed by students and academic staff of the Department of Computing at Saint Martin’s Institute of Higher Education.
St Martin's Institute of IT was founded in 1985. It is a licensed teaching affiliate centre of the University of London International Programmes working under the umbrella of the Ministry of Education in Malta. St Martin's today is a multi-faculty private Tertiary Education Institution, attracting students from different countries reading for University of London undergraduate Diploma and Honours Degree programmes in Accountancy, Banking, Business, Business Administration, Economics and Management, Marketing, Human Resource Management, International Business, Information Systems and Management, Creative Computing, and Computing and Information systems. St Martin's also offers University of London Diploma for graduates in Management and Information Systems, and postgraduate Degrees in Information Security and International Business.

Extremely confusing to know where I'm supposed to be looking since I don't control the travel

@@smiitmalta On a roller coaster there are tracks alerting you to where your focus is supposed to be. Once I moved my camera on this, it was all over as I didn't know what was happening or the direction lol

@@PoleTooke This is a short film. The VR experience itself allows the visitor to move unfettered inside the space and explore freely without the roller coaster effect of the director's choice of viewing point.

So....are your throbbing rocky depths carved from tools of bone? You said your somber skin is the result of the taint of your womb. Just trying to know more about the sweet oils in your deep chambers. Cheers. Btw, what are you wearing ?

I wish they would release the 3D model into public domain. At least I couldn't find it online anywhere.

This narration is fantastic. It gets the viewer to both understand the fundamentals of the construction and why it was important, and how alien our own fascination with it would be to the ancient people's that built it.

Entrance prices are too much exagerated especially for us citizens.

A poor substitute for the real thing. I am disappointed again that it seems to be shut on my visit in December

I mean, it's a valid theory, but they don't know for sure that this was a tomb, as a matter of fact I rarely hear scientists entertain that.

Well done! Maybe another video about the cave set in 2,500 BCE to show an ancient burial rite in the cave.

This is our next phase of the project, implanting objects and avatars in 360 degrees. Not an easy task technically, due to lighting and perspective, since in the actual VR model from which this film was produced, the user has full freedom to look at an object from any angle they so wish. In the film it is somewhat easier, because the position of the viewer is determined by the camera - we are stretching the boundaries here.
