5:15 I have a Union Pacific version of the combine (Coach/baggage) car! It looks nice on the end of a semi-modern freight train, just in front of the caboose! 6:00 those couplers are called Horn-hook couplers. They're used on many older HO scale trains! you can make them work with knuckle couplers, but they may come un-coupled after a few laps around the track! I'm glad you have a French steam engine for those Wagons-Lits cars!
Ooh very nice! Yeah those are lovely, I'll have to do that! Yes I have found that - but they seem to work fine 90% of the time, which is quite good! Many thanks again for your comment, Sam :)
The Bachmann "Old Timers" coaches and combination cars are based on 1860-1890 era wooden sided but steel framed cars. Although few of them are around anymore in standard gauge, even in museums or historical railways, you can still find cars like these in service today at a few narrow gauge historical railroads, like the White Pass & Yukon RR and the Durango and Silverton RR. Theses historical railroads will run these cars behind early model diesels when their steam locomotives are out of service. 4-4-0, 4-6-0, 2-6-0, and 2-8-0 would be the proper steam locomotives to run in front of these cars, possibly small 2-6-2 and 2-8-2 as the latest steam locomotives. RS3 and GP7 or even older diesel locomotives would look good in front of them as a heritage railroad excursion.
Hi Ron, many thanks for your wonderful knowledge as always, much appreciated my friend. I would love to see some in real life though, I suppose there aren't any in my country? Thanks for watching mate, Sam :)
Another excellent collection of rolling stock Sam at excellent prices, I will have to try and find out if there is anything similar, in terms of Antiques Fairs, near me...Simon
Hi Simon - absolutely, I love these! It's well worth it... even if there's no trains, it is disappointing, but they're such interesting places to look around! Cheers mate, Sam :)
The kuplung on the Jouef wagons are the (old) standard H0 one, u can find them on most EU H0 trains (like Roco, Electrotren, Piko, ect.), and I think it do was introduced by Jouef in the 1950's. That 3th US wagon is a half-baggage; on passenger trains they usually don't use a caboose/brake wagon. And yes they mach the Jupiter loco (in era).
Hi mate!! Yes definitely - I found the same on one of my Fleichmann models, which couples to them very nicely! Thanks a lot for the info on the coach too! Cheers mate, Sam :)
Nice finds you scored the Central Pacific car you call a break is actually called a combination car they were used for both passengers an baggage at the same time!!!!
Heyo Sam - that 'brake' coach is actually a 'combine' coach. The non-passenger compartment stores baggage (although not unlike a brake), and they were usually at the front of the train rather than the rear. Hope this helps!
You had a good deal with those coaches. I have some Bachman double decker coaches which are excellent. From my experience there are two types of knuckle couplings, one which is magnetic and hook up just fine and another strange type that takes a bit of tending to couple.
Hi Sam. Those Jouef coaches are beautiful. I know you won't, but if you've a spare week, wondered if you could adapt windows - take away "curtains", and add table lamps making a Dining Car - Triang/Hornby used to give this option. I'd call that a successful shopping day! Alan.
The coach that you thought was a brake coach is actually called a "combine car". They're intended to carry baggage in one half and passengers in the other.
I can confirm this. Combine coaches were often, if not always, used on branch lines. This was because passenger numbers were often not enough to run dedicated passenger trains. These were often seen on mixed trains, in front of or behind a line of freight cars, along with the caboose. Several combine coaches can be seen on several heritage railroads in the USA, like the Wilmington and Western, or Strasburg Railroad.
The Wagon Lits sleeping cars you could have a Class 71, 73 or 33 pull and recreate the Night Ferry overnight service! The 0-4-0T didn't look out of place pulling the American stock either!
Ooh that sounds fun - thanks for that, I'll give that a go! Yeah I thought she looked right with them too - I quite enjoyed that! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
for the price I think you got some lovely rolling stock mate :),while I'm not a massive fan of the American railroads the little coaches look lovely-all the best mate
If your worried about the couplings if you handle them with a little bit of care they won't go bad as one of my coupling have . Compared to the British hook and chain couplings ours seem a bit bulky but they do the job...mostly Also yea most American rolling stock have metal wheels . The central Pacific coaches are a little older they are usually seen on smaller railroads they are very comfy inside. And yes that one coach is a break coach/baggage.
What you thought was a American brake coach is actually a combination coach it carries passengers and freight,it goes on the front of the train or the back.
hi sam, those blue coaches are French, orient express stock?. Jouef were / are a french company, (although they did make some british 00 diesels at one point). But they would look behind a yankee loco. you could even run them behind a Merchant Navy as part of a Golden Arrow ferry train.
They look great can't wait to see them on the track I'm not really into European railways but I must admit those blue coaches looked really nice I might have to get some if they are cheap and well priced not like the prices today
Hi mate, thanks very much! Yes they often did - I suppose it's more 'normal' to run forwards, but yeah they went tender first sometimes too! All the best, Sam :)
Looks like another great day out Sam. I've coaches similar to those by Playcraft which I think was part of JOUEF they are very light with plastic wheels I think they were a budget version for the uk market. I also have the Tri-ang version of these and they are just the Standard Tri-ang Paulman made in blue with similar wording as your coaches. These are stupid money!!! Probably best avoided. The ones you have look great as train. Those American coaches look great and the freightliners are great models there's a wide variety to choose from.... Great video. Oscar
Thanks very much mate - ahh okay yeah you might be right there, they look like the playcraft stuff for sure! Ahh yeah I've seen those - but tow, that's great that you have some of them!! Many thanks for watching mate, Sam :)
I only have 2 coaches they are old as well they where my grandad's ......... Luckily for me I got a great Northern that goes well with them ..... I have loads of wagons though
I reckon you could recreate the orient express using those coaches ;) another great haul there Sam, I do really like the Bachmann coaches. Keep the faith - callum
He would also appreciate the Bachmann Pullman Heavyweight coaches, even unmarked, more suitable for the early 20th Century American trains. They are available on the web, but not as low as £5. These coaches are great for 19th Century American trains.
Well, the British couplers wouldn't work with the long 100-200 cars American trains, especially up or down a grade. Think in terms of a few thousand miles, not a few hundred miles. While the British built many four track mainlines nationwide, almost all of America's main lines were single track with passing sidings except in Northeast America and within cities limits near stations and depots. Since there is so much single track, American railroads use longer trains less frequently as the British...
Jouef is French. They are french sleeping coaches from the Orient Express! Wagon Lit (say: Vaago Li or something like that😂) is actually quite a famous sleeping car company, just look it up mate!😉 Greetings from Germany Liam
Wow sam you are so lucky to get orient express coaches for £5 EACH! What an absolute score you got there. Now you can do a RUNNING SESSION WITH FAMEOUS TRAINS video and include the orient express along with other trains such as the flying Scotsman the blue Pullman the Devon belle and many more.Of course I understand that you have a lot of other videos to make before considering this idea but im sure that youll get round to it in time and when you do make it im sure it will like all your other videos: AMAZING!Yours in railway modelling-BRIAN PANNIER
haha yeah - I was really happy with these - they're not in mint condition, but close enough for me!! That'd be a great one - yeah I'll have to do that soon! :D Thanks again Brian, Sam :)
Could your please run daylight with those blue coaches. Great selection of rolling stock, fans are going to be very happy. Also Could you maybe run those red coaches with James just for fun when you review another Thomas loco
Yeah I think that'd look very nice - so I'll try that! :3 Really glad you liked them - i'm very happy with them! Yeah I can do that, if I remember to, haha! Cheers, Sam :)
Hey Sam, great video! I'm not sure when your next "Your request running session" will be but I have a request. How about double heading the Hogwarts Castle with Olton Hall with coaches of your choice! Thanks!
Hi Connor, that's a fab idea - thanks for that one! Yeah I know - it's annoying, but I can only take the first 25 or so requests from each requests video, since I just get hundreds otherwise :/ All the best mate, Sam :)
Wagon lits carriages are part of the orient express your very lucky to get them .they should have th old Lima couplings on .see if you can get a french locomotive cheers mate e
the red American couches will go great with the American 4-4-0, you would never see a engine like a 2-8-4 pulling them. I hope this helps. =) And that brake coach is actually a baggage combine car.
i think back in the day those first coaches where long journey's as in from texas to alaska that kind of distance, nuu! don't throw boxes away your loss subs if you do that ppl hate to see box condition boxes (unless it like water damaged or is falling apart or is sun faded then that's ok) even if there only lightly falling apart, £20 for 3 boxed usa coaches, that's pritty dam good! i know the pullmen ones ( i think that's the name the luxary ones) we had in the chairty shop where unboxed but sold for £30 ten quid per coach
Ahh okay, thanks for that! Unfortunately I don't have space to be keeping boxes like that - I keep loco boxes, but that has to be it really :( haha yeah - I was really happy with that price too - and they're new!! :D All the best mate, Sam :)
Overall a good buy Sam. The coaches are regular French sleepers so now you need a French 4-6-2 to pull them. The Bachmann coaches are your worst buy of the lot. They are from the "Train set" stuff that Bachmann put out from the 1970's 'till present and we would expect to see them second hand for about half of what you paid. Your sellers over there are cashing in on the Bachmann Europe reputation. Hope that hasn't spoilt it for you. Enjoyed the video, clicked "yes" for more. .......David.
Thanks a lot for the info on those David, I'll have to look out for one of those then!! Ahh is that so?? They must be more expensive over here then - I've just checked them out on Ebay, and they're going for £10+ each in the UK, so still not too bad! No not at all - I'm still more than happy with those for the price! Thanks again mate, Sam :)
the special american piece of rolling stock you called "the brake" is actually called a combine car and the "brake" area holds bags, i'm from the u.s., it's my job to know these things, is it not?
You need to get a French or German loco or something like that to pull them orient express coaches. You could do a video with a train of Pullmans for the English bit out of Victoria and then show these coaches!
Hello, it will be better if you have a German steam locomotive to pull your blue coaches ( orient express which runs from Paris to Istanbul) like à Br 01 or maybe à French one like a 141 R Pacific
Combine car, short for Combination car. Walt Disney and his brother Roy bought a Combine car for Disneyland back during the 1950s. In their minds a passenger train wasn't a passenger train without one. Both Disney brothers threw newspapers growing up, their father was a newspaper distributor dealer for the Kansas City Star. Walt and Roy slipped and sold newspapers from a Combine car. No one else wanted that route with the train. The FWWR Ten Wheeler 4-6-0 in Fort Worth was once owned by Walt Disney at Disneyland...
French it literally means international company of sleeper cars and wagons LOL Jouef are french firm part of Hornby International now they are sleeper if they say Voitures-Lit I speak French fluently, also you can get buffers on Jouef stock all my Ho coaches have buffers or I bought spares for them on eBay UK
Ahh yeah - that may be a good point! Though personally I'd probably never take them off! I'll remember that for the future though! All the best, Sam :)
hi maybe you should do a running session with you posh coaches eg french orient coaches and pullmans and 3rd line whatever you like the old box make a building out of or something everything in model railway/road worth something to someone
Hi mate! Yes I do have what I think is German engine - I'll try to show it soon - I think it's in my next requests video actually! :D All the best, Sam :)

Ooh okay mate - good luck getting some! :D

Hello mr Sam. Awesome video! Also, one question? Do tender engines run backwards in real life?
Hi mate, thanks very much! Yes they often did - I suppose it's more 'normal' to run forwards, but yeah they went tender first sometimes too!
All the best,
Sam :)
Nice one Sam, great find, all that rolling stock for under £70. Cheers John.
Thanks a lot John, yes I thought those prices were definitely more than fair!

Great video. Oscar
Thanks very much mate - ahh okay yeah you might be right there, they look like the playcraft stuff for sure! Ahh yeah I've seen those - but tow, that's great that you have some of them!!
Many thanks for watching mate,

I only have 2 coaches they are old as well they where my grandad's ......... Luckily for me I got a great Northern that goes well with them ..... I have loads of wagons though
Ooh that sounds good - the old coaches are normally the best though, don't forget!

the red American couches will go great with the American 4-4-0, you would never see a engine like a 2-8-4 pulling them. I hope this helps. =) And that brake coach is actually a baggage combine car.

Could you do an American locomotives running session
Definitely! I'll need to find some more American locos first though! :D
Cheers,
Sam :)
the special american piece of rolling stock you called "the brake" is actually called a combine car and the "brake" area holds bags, i'm from the u.s., it's my job to know these things, is it not?
Yes you're right - I found that out too late, lol! ;D
Thanks for watching - Sam :)
your blue french coaches can be seen on the nene valley railway
Really?! Wow that's great - fantastic to know they're really out there too! :D
Cheers mate,
Sam :)
What happened to the American 4-4-0
It broke sadly, and the armature was spent - so it's gone for scrap unfortunately :/
Cheers mate,
Sam :)
You need to get a French or German loco or something like that to pull them orient express coaches. You could do a video with a train of Pullmans for the English bit out of Victoria and then show these coaches!
Yeah for sure - I really should do that! Thanks for the idea on that too - I'll think about that! :D
Cheers mate,
Sam :)
can the Tran with the red coaches deral😱
haha! Yeah it did do - I think it was one of the coaches that did, no idea why though... it didn't do it the next time around!
Cheers,
Sam :)
What about you could run them with Edward?
H! Nice idea - he'd look awesome with those - I'll ask him!
Cheers,
Sam :)
Hello, it will be better if you have a German steam locomotive to pull your blue coaches ( orient express which runs from Paris to Istanbul) like à Br 01 or maybe à French one like a 141 R Pacific
Hi Vincent, you're right that would be very nice to do - thanks for the recommendations, I'll look for some of those!
Cheers mate,
Sam :)
thats a combine car I think it holds passengers and baggages
Combine car, short for Combination car. Walt Disney and his brother Roy bought a Combine car for Disneyland back during the 1950s. In their minds a passenger train wasn't a passenger train without one. Both Disney brothers threw newspapers growing up, their father was a newspaper distributor dealer for the Kansas City Star. Walt and Roy slipped and sold newspapers from a Combine car. No one else wanted that route with the train. The FWWR Ten Wheeler 4-6-0 in Fort Worth was once owned by Walt Disney at Disneyland...
Right!! Thanks very much for that, I've made a note of what it is!
Cheers,
Sam :)

you shouldn't glue the containers because you can get a container crane to lift them onto lorries

Nice video
Thanks a lot - much appreciated!
All the best,

American rolling stock is more expensive than equivalent European in the UK even if it's European manufacturers. Like Rivarossi etc.
Yeah I've noticed that too - I think it is better quality though, for the most part!
Cheers,
Sam :)
Sam'sTrains yes I'm no expert but from what I have seen the vintage European is far better than the American and much more affordable.
Despite me being American, I much prefer British style trains, and rolling stock lol (^_^)
That's great to hear! I think I do too... but I'm probably biased, hehe!
Thanks for watching,
Sam :)
