Good on Barry for calling out the BS on the spoon. I suspect the reason why it tastes different is that he also used a metal spoon for the control. Different metals will make creamy foods have different tastes and textures (thanks to Stephen Fry on "QI" for that little tidbit), so it's no wonder that it will taste different than a plastic spoon. Plus, let's face it, in the end, you really are just licking a battery.

Dan Formosa, a gadget expert over at Epicurious, reviewed the burger buddy (or something similar) a couple of months back, and one thing he noticed was that once you got down to the bottom third or so of the burger, you ran into an issue of the burger buddy being in the way.

I think the explanation of the SpoonTEK scam going around is right, that it's the placebo effect because you know what they tell you it's supposed to do, and so it does. But Barry also mentions how heavy the spoon is at one end, meaning that the spoon is noticeably more weighty than a normal spoon, which is another thing that makes you think food tastes better. That is a researched phenomenon that has been exploited in the restaurant industry since Ben was small, so it's designed to trick you into thinking it work two ways, while being utter tripe that's just a spoon shaped plastic shell with an LED hole.

Also, have people really kinda forgotten what plastic spoons do to food?
I can distinctly remember how "rounded" a plastic spoon can make food taste and how a metal spoon (a cheap one) can make foods taste more...metallic/sour.
Just try to imagine, right now, eating some cold yogurt, with a room temp plastic spoon vs a room temp metal spoon. You'd instantly have two slightly differing taste in mind, right?

I'm going to go with all the other channels that have reviewed and panned the burger holder. You need a specifically sized burger to take advantage of the thing greatly reducing its use. As well at some point you have to dig into the device to pull out the remaining burger which can lead to a mess. Finally it does nothing to stop any drips from the front/sides of the burger.

I think they mentioned that one point of the Burger Buddy is that it's reusable so it lessens the amount of wasted paper napkins.
If "doofers" are made of cardboard, then isn't that just the same thing as a paper burger holder; use once, then toss.
Or do people in NZ & AU wash their doofers so they can reuse them the next time they're eating burgers?

    • @admnz78
      @admnz78 3 ปีที่แล้ว +35

@@xientau9028 no we don’t wash them, we prefer to use the cardboard ones since they come from a sustainable, renewable resource that has far less impact on the environment during the manufacture process, logistics operations, storage etc, in general, a far smaller carbon footprint and are recyclable vs the heavy impact that silicon products have in the above in addition to the additional chemical byproducts that are also produced. This is without consideration of the additional packaging for the burger buddy will also have more impact.

I wonder if Barry’s paying more attention to eating whilst using the super spoon or whatever it was called. And that’s why it’s tasting better, if you really focus on what your eating it can make things taste much better. Would be interesting to see if the food has the same effect if he takes as much time with a normal spoon.

    • @fabe61
      @fabe61 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

A normal spoon is also not made of a quality plastic. Plastic cutlery can often make food taste worse because it’s normally cheap disposable tat, but similarly metal cutlery can impart an irony tang to certain foods. The difference he tasted in the yoghurt was almost definitely because he was using a light, cheap looking metal teaspoon vs a quality plastic spoon.

BS on the LED spoon. Think of how the circuit would work. One contact on the back of the spoon you hold, one contact on the inside touching the food. In order for the circuit to close, the current would need to run through your body. Meaning they are using extremely low amperage and high voltage. They should have tested it vs a normal plastic spoon instead of a metal one. I'm guessing the flavor would have been the same.
I'd like to see a blind taste test so placebo can't play a role in it. Unless there is something they didn't mention in the video, it smells of snake oil.

I'm willing to bet the "Burger Buddy" (actually there's a similar gadget "tested" on epicurious) is not that "eco-friendly" as they claim. Even for a tote bag, you have to use it A WHOLE LOT to offset the costs of plastic bags it replaces. Pretty sure to be more eco-friendly than tissues, or the most eco-friendly of everything, hands, you'd have to use them their entire lifetime.

    • @Rillka

Eco stands for ECOLOGY, not economy. It doesn't have to cost less, it has to have lesser impact on the planet. Plastic bags are forever trash, while totes are nearly forever useful AND recyclable. So in this case you're trading single-use napkins (non-recyclable trash) for nearly indestructible item that will serve you for years.

Tbh it’s interesting to see you guys try different gadgets and cook.
I’m unfortunately VERY accident prone. When I was around 13-15, and helping my mom in the kitchen, I was using a mandolin when I accidentally cut of the top of my finger and rushed to the hospital (threw out the mandolin after that)
Another accident was just heating up some pasta in the microwave, and when taking it out, sauce spilled onto my hand (where I still have the scar from getting burned)
After those incidents I didn’t help in the kitchen as often as I used to.

Burger Buddy: Great for a static environment where you know it'll be handy. Realistically, you'd need to plan to buy a burger to use these while you're out. That notwithstanding, you'd need to consider cleaning it and carrying it before and after. Where I can see this working is those with mobility issues (I love you guys include these points regularly, I reckon it helps with awareness) and diners. Maybe a cornstarch or husk-based disposable version could be developed to make it broadly accessible.
Final Press: Reinvents the wheel. You can get a compact Aeropress now, which are dead easy to use and clean and are practically bomb-proof. Then there's 2-3 serve French presses or moka pots. If that doesn't tickle your pickle, there's always whimsically shaped tea strainers (that don't have moving parts) which you can also, creatively, use for coffee.
SpoonTEK: Interesting idea but Mike nails it; you're part of an experiment. Most likely one that involves the phrase "placebo effect" as it literally tells you that it should be working as opposed to you noticing it hasn't worked. Take something like the miracle berries, there's no denying when that works. Another giveaway is their fancy explanation, the phrasing seems somewhat suspect.

Once you've eaten it down to the point that it's smaller than the depth of the holder in every direction, you have to fish it out to finish eating it.

That first gadget is actually such a simple, brilliant idea. The baffled silicone means it can expand and compress fine and yet it just works. That's actually so smart

The "Burger Buddy" is a silicon version of the "Hamburger Holder" marketed here in New Zealand by Burger Fuel as a "Doofer"
It is made out of kraft board and provided in sizes to match the establishment,
and was a finalist of the 2014 New Zealand Innovators Awards.

A cardboard disposable one honestly makes more sense to me as a product than the burger buddy

Love this video, looks like a kids dream to be in a toy store overnight, Barry and mike have hidden until everyone’s gone home then got into the gadget box!

I was so sad for Mike, when he puts out the second burger buddy and Barry still did not share the burger with him.

You should ask Burger Buddy for a portion of their proceeds. You made it look so good that I bought a set before your video ended! (Don’t worry-I paused it so I wouldn’t miss a single second!)

The Burger Buddy looks similar to the cardboard "doofer" that an NZ chain, Burger Fuel, gives out with their burgers.

I saw a review of the Burger Buddy on Epicurious, they guy damn it was nearly impossible to finish the burger because once you eat most of it there's nothing left to hold on to.

Just a fun thing for the first gadget, it’s also a sensory object. As in when I eat burgers that are messy it makes me anxious which makes me not want to eat it. If it was fully contained I could definitely eat more types of burgers. Love this idea. Like Barry said I can believe it hadn’t been invented before.
