Never seen this footage, around the time just before the Khmer Rouge overran Phnom Penh in April 1975. Those passengers were incredibly lucky.

That is a very rare footage of the chaos in early April 1975. As Pochentong was under harassment rocket attack by the Khmer Rouge, all passengers had to be processed and checked in at the Air Cambodge office near Psar Thmei, then taken by buses to the airplane and quickly load and take off. The plane never turned the engine off. As seen in this video, the airport came under rocket attack during the video. The video showed the Caravelle jet, it was in early April, it took off from Phnom Penh and flew to Bangkok. The Caravelle never came back, on its last flight it was abandoned at Don Muang airport. It is now deteriorated and derelict at one corner of the airport. The last few flights by Air Cambodge from Don Muang to Pochentong used propeller DC-6 and DC-7.

@@sleepybraincells I know this because I was there and my family was one of many that made the escape in the next to the last flight.

I wonder how many of those who remained behind survived the KR years.

Those who could leave Cambodia before the Khmer Rouge ruled the nation were lucky. People in this video looked happy and relatively wealthy. I wonder how many of them could survive under the brutal rule of the Khmer Rouge.

The Khmer Rouge must have been the worst government in human history - even the Poles under the Nazis didn't get hit as hard as the ordinary Cambodian people did under Pol Pot. The Khmer Republic seemed like a vibrant society - these old films show the capital city as relatively modern for its day, there was a thriving film industry, TV, and the Weternised music of The Khmer Republic is still listened to by people all around the world to this day .... I have never been to Cambodia, but it seems as if it never recovered.

Khmer Rouge were totally evil. Probably the worst regime in world history on a purely per capita basis. Gotta be insane and totally nuts to want to destroy your own country and send it back to the dark ages. It's staggering that all this really occurred, insanity.

they're starving or working to death because pol pot, I mean Khmer rouge hate citizens that live in Phnom Penh (people who survived on April 17th 1975).

    • @ActiveAussie2024

All those soldiers were probably executed in the first few days ( April 17 to 20, 1975) At least 30 to 50 percent of the people in this video would have died from forced labour and starvation in the three years after this footage was taken
