    Al MacInnis said in his own words that Colton Parayko is the rare player you go looking for the second you get rid of him. Parayko will, more than likely, be a Blue till he retires, which I am more than ok with.

  • @billmauer8117

    I was never negative about Parayko. Did he regress some from the Stanley Cup year--yes. He had Boumeester as his partner and that was a great combination. I think with Parayko's size, speed, and shot he's too valuable to get rid of unless they'd get something extremely good in return. In my experience, when giving up a very good player, we usually get crap in return.

      I have always liked Parayko. When he is used correctly and has a more defensive minded partner, that is when he is able to really shine.
      Edit: to your point about Bouwmeester, I think that it worked as well as it did because of their chemistry, their knowledge of the other’s style, and Bouwmeester was more defensively minded.

    Kyrou had a really interesting season. You could tell he was really focusing on his defensive game, and he made big strides on that end of the ice but it seemed to affect him offensively.
    I think Bolduc is definitely the guy to keep an eye on from a young player perspective this year, I expect him to crack the top six by the end of the season
    There's a lot of doom and gloom in the Blues fanbase but I'm excited for this coming season

    • @davidroberts1026
      @davidroberts1026 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Good point on Kyrou--I felt the same: he was really trying to learn to be more of a 200 foot player, in the NHL, and his offense suffered some (but then later was much better). Hoping that he has figured out a balance and has a much better year.
      And like many, I wanna see Dvorsky at training camp! He looked great at prospect camp, he's saying the things you want to hear, and is supposed to be bigger and stronger than last year. He's a real wild card, imo. He may not be quite ready, or he could be like Thomas and make the team and able to chip in while learning. Let's Go Blues!

    • @JustBob-sw4rf
      @JustBob-sw4rf 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Let’s not forget that Kyrou decided to quit playing for Berube in mid-season. That also accounted for his under performance in the first half of the season. Here’s hoping that he’s decided that slacking off on the ice isn’t an appropriate response to a coach’s criticism. Here’s also hoping that he’s put on some mass over the summer so he can better protect the puck when checked.

    I think one of the things that gets overlooked is the fact that we (the blues) changed coaches last year.
    The team looked different after Chief left in a positive way. In my eyes, we weren't even supposed to be within 6 points of the playoffs. As some have pointed out, we lost to San Jose 3 times, and that alone would have put us in a position to at least compete for that last spot.
    I would be fairly disappointed if we don't at least make the last wild card spot this year. If so, there do need to be changes and some of these young players need to be given a chance.

    • @woodsie22
      @woodsie22 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      There were some things that got better - goaltending certainly got better, not that it was bad to begin the season. My concern about the play after the switch was that they relied almost entirely on the PP. Those goals went up in stretches, but the 5-on-5 play went down. I’m hoping that having a full camp and an experienced asst in Julien will help even that out.
      I also hope they don’t super glue RT with Kyrou the whole year and actually switch it up if the scoring dries up a few games. I did feel Drew was slow to do that last year.

    A couple thoughts… I do think the Blues could make the playoffs. There is a lot more internal competition for roster spots this year than there has been since Kyrou and Thomas were pushing for full time spots. I think that will help keep guys invested who looked lackluster and at times, apathetic, for portions of the last season. I think they are probably going to be competing with Vegas or the Kings for a wildcard spot.
    I think they may use that cap space to get some first through third round draft picks in the next few years. Armstrong said in an interview that is something he’d like to address.
    Finally, as a Blues fan, it’s frustrating to see them miss the playoffs two years in a row. Especially the way they did last year. The last time they missed 2 years in a row was ‘10 and ‘11. Before that, they missed 3 years after the lockout. Before that, it was ‘78 and ‘79. And from ‘80 through ‘04, they made the playoffs every year. Sure, there were good runs and bad, but they were in consistently. That is the source of my frustration with the team. I’ve grown up expecting them to put in everything they have and play in meaningful games. There were only a handful of guys who did that consistently last season.

    The Blues PP last year was atrocious, puck control in the o-zone generally, all of which translate to talent - Blues goals came on transition (speed not a problem). I see them 20th-14th in the league. Just good enough to not get a high pick and just bad enough to not be real contenders even if they make the dance. I think the core of Buchnevich, Kyrou, Neighbors, Binnington and Thomas are good enough to build around and hopefully be contenders again before the decade is over.

    • @314jph
      @314jph 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      My thoughts too. W the Cap and the competition, StL SHOULD be in a rebuild. Unfortunately they have alot of NTC that Armey painted the Blues into a corner. Krug, Leddy, and even Faulk contracts have not panned out. Kyrou is WAY overpaid. They lost alot of the depth to roll 4 strong lines. I am die hard, but I would rather they wait for a solid team to make a deep run vs barely make it.
      All that said, I am very thankful to Stillmann and the ownership group. Covid (and no money from no fans) was harsh just when the Blues were built to be contenders for 3 years.
      Miss you Bouwmeester. Still salty in StL over no NTC for Pietro, but then starts handing them out like candy.

  • @jimmyjoseph51

    The Blues showed too much inconsistency last year. Up for a couple of games, down for other games. To me, it all comes down to having players who have a burning desire to win every time they take the ice and play like it. Stop babying players that think they are something special. Everyone must pull their own weight and then some. Most importantly, I want players who will stop at nothing to see their name on the Stanley Cup. That is the ultimate goal. Anyone who thinks they are something special and don't need to put forth maximum effort every night shouldn't be wearing a Bluenote. As coach, my message to the men would simply be this: When on the ice, concentrate, focus and take the shortest route to the puck and arrive there in ill-humor. If you aren't willing to do that, then find another team to play for.

  • @tbell61
    @tbell61 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Well, I certainly HOPE they make the playoffs. Once you get into the habit of missing on an annual basis (see Sabres, Buffalo) it becomes harder and harder to get back in. The key is the advancement of the young players. Dvorsky making the team out of camp would help a lot. Snuggerrud joining the team after his college season is over would also be a big help. Dean and Bolduc MUST show continued improvement. Where the Blues are lacking is young defensemen who are close to being ready to play. The d-men they drafted this year are a ways away from contributing. Finally, this is not a huge deal, but it is not obvious to me who the #3 goaltender is, should the need arise. Ellis and Zherenko are the goalies at Springfield, but I don't know which one is better.

    Da Blues can absolutely make the playoffs. And if they can find a forward line that can play the shut-down role that Steen, Sundquist and Barbashev did in '19, they can make a long run for the Cup. Both Binnington and Hoefer can steal games, a necessity to win the cup so they have that. Their top 4 D pairing isn't strong enough (is Leddy really first line D?) but if someone else has a breakout year, that might be enough. After that, it's a matter of seeing if Neighbors is the next Thomas (in terms of production, not style), if Kyrou can become the player his contract thinks he is and if someone else gives us a strong third line threat. All of that breaks for the Blues, and they stay out of serious injury problems, our second sip from Lord Stanley's chalice is perfectly reasonable. Is that 5.5k to 1 odds? Nope. I'd say more like 1k to 1. 😄

      One thing you failed to mention....speed. We are a slow team, mostly on defense, where its easy to hem us in and grind us down. We got outshot a lot last year simply because we had the puck less. That will not change, so while showing up against san jose might have got us in, we would have been eaten alive. Kids got some speed, but are not difference makers yet, and our d core injury prone. I hope your right, but im not expecting much.

  • @FurySK
    @FurySK 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Couple of notes on the blues:
    1) Perunovich is unlikely to be top 4, he kinda is what he is in a lot of ways. He can move the puck effectively, above most of the other blues defensemen when it comes to offensive zone puck movement, and thats enough to get him PP1 or PP2 time given the options. what he is not is an average defensive defensemen, he's below average. He's a guy that you can live with as a depth 5 or 6, but once he gets elevated beyond that the trouble begins. I think in the short term, while not ideal on the left, it will be Joseph or Suter, and as you correctly noted it likely positions the 3rd pairing defensemen on the left side to get more time. Could see a world where the blues run 7 defensemen occasionally.
    2) I think this season is about the same expected finish from me. Theres some opportunities for the goaltending to slip a bit from great form last season, there is potential for the bottom 6's increased speed/skill to contribute to better depth scoring that steals a few more points. The only thing i would say is that the blues this year are far less likely to have injuries derail them from depth positions. last year guys that are mostly shuttle candidates between nhl and ahl were getting 4th line minutes regularly. Bolduc's first good look at the NHL level showcased he has that offensive upside to be a potential threat to break with the team over a few of the others who would have to clear waivers to go down, the blues are probably only 1 guy coming up or 1 trade coming away from being pushed from fringe playoffs to a playoff team. certainly not good enough to make any real noise though.

    Honestly, the offense and defense (including better backchecking from forwards) needs to improve for Blues to have a chance at playoffs. I expect goaltending to drop a little as they put up some numbers last season that are absolutely unsustainable, but if the defense and offense improves, it should balance out. With the exception of the Leddy/Parayko pair, the bottom 4 of the defense was horrible last season. Kessel would be the other exception but he only played the last half of the season. Replacing Krug with Suter in the top 4 and a full season of Kessel should improve the defense (as well as Krug being on IR all season). After this season, they have better flexibility to make moves on the defense as Krug/Faulk/Leddy all go from full NTC to 15/16 team no trade lists. Blues also got practically no offense from their bottom 6 forwards either. There were a lot of moves done to make the bottom 6 faster and better defensively this offseason. Some extra contribution there and better defensive play from the forwards should also improve the team. Bolduc is a lock for the top 6 IMO. His last 5 games of the season playing with Thomas and Schenn, he had 5 even strength points in those games and looked really good with them. I think he is the reason the Blues didn't acquire anyone for the top 6 this offseason. They are expecting the internal growth there. I also think Dvorsky has a really good shot at making the team out of camp. I have never heard Army talk up a prospect the way he has Dvorsky. He may go to the AHL if he struggles, but for my money, I think he makes team out of camp. On paper, I like the look of the forward group.

    I honestly can’t blame people hesitant on the Blues. I think for them to make the playoffs, some of the prospects - Dvorsky, the Zachs, etc will need to make an impact. And Kyrou needs to prove doubters (like me) wrong. His final numbers made his season look way more respectable than it was last year.
    Goaltending was definitely a highlight last year, and Hofer actually got noticeably more comfortable after about January - not just stat wise, but how he held himself before and during games. A lot less flailing.
    If Krug misses the season, I think he’ll be heading to Robidas Island to finish his career. With all his previous time off for injury, I already had a suspicion that he wouldn’t be finishing that contract.
    Oh, and a dark horse on having a good season - Toropchenko. I don’t think we’ve seen him hit his full potential yet.

      Like someone else said, kyrou spent most of the year focusing on defense more, and it hurt his offense a little. Ended up minus 12, and since he was on the ice for at least 10 empty netters against, he was basically an even player. Considering the year before he ended up minus 37, id say hes progressing just fine. If we had better finishers, hed have another 15 or 20 assists, and would have finished with about the same points with a vastly improved +/- so i dont know what you are expecting, hes not making mcdavid money

      @@anthonyfaccaro7118 I didn’t see it as him focusing on defense. People always talk about that and think others are wanting him to be a Selke guy. Honestly, I’m not even looking for that. To me, the most frustrating things about his game are instead that he is so easily knocked off the puck and when he has the puck, he doesn’t always seem to know what to do with it. He didn’t do it as much last year, because of getting knocked off the puck sooner, but there were too many times in the previous seasons where he would get the puck, do at least one full circle of the zone, often two, and never made a play. I don’t think it’s as obvious on tv, because they will keep switching cameras for different angles, but live and from the nosebleeds, you can’t hide that.
      I’m not expecting him to be Ryan O’Reilly or even Robert Thomas. But at his contract, I shouldn’t be able to forget that he is playing because he is so unnoticeable on a given night.

      Edm, Van, LAk might finish 1, 2, 3 in PAC, & Dal, Nas, & Col should finish 1, 2, 3 in CEN
      Its close - Wpg, Min, StL, Cgy, & VGk (regressed a bit, lost some proven veterans) for those 2 WC spots.
      I could see VGk regressing a bit & missing playoffs; they improved their D for sure but lost important veterans in Marchy, Stephensn, Carrie, Martinz, L.Thomp, & Amadi. They did bring in players to offset those losses (Herl, Hanif, V.Olofs, Holt, Brissn, Samsnv) but not enough for me, as many teams in the Pacific div., & West Conference made additions to their rosters this summer (with the exception of Van, Wpg, Col, who are much the same).
      With that said, Min & Wpg seem like the odds on favourites to get the 2 WC spots.
      So likely only 3 teams make the playoffs from the PAC, & 5 from the tougher Central division.
      There's isn't much separating Cgy, StL &, maybe even VGk who have a similar calibre Top 9, Top 4 D pair, & G tandem.
      Sea for me, might be the odd one out, they are still in transition - slowly extirpating their expansion draft players for drafted prospects - they seem to be lacking something not sure what it is. Of course, I could be wrong about them if Benier & Wrigh play to their full potential, & their new UFA signings - Montou & Stephensn do well, & their goalie duo play reasonably well. But I'll stick with them finishing 6th or 7th in the PAC.
      Cgy is being underrated a bit here, if they get a couple of rebound yrs from Hubie & Kuzmenk, & Wolf & Vladr can play reasonably well as a tandem, things might shape up well for them this yr. Cgy had about 4 guys who had career yrs last yr not counting rookies - Zary, Coronat, Pospisl, & Miromanv who could flourish entering their sophomore yrs. They need to stay healthy & get decent netminding.
      The other 4 - SJ, Uta, Chi, & Ana don't have a hope of making them playoffs as a WC & will all finish in the Bottom 8 in the league.

    I believe the Blues can make the Playoffs & Push Vegas out.
    I don’t believe they can go deep. While they do have a load of guys who have been there & done that (gone on deep playoffs runs, 3rd round or further), their coach isn’t good enough to take them to the Cup. You could have said the same about Berube, however he at least got to Finals as a Player, and with another organization not as a head coach. Bannister hasn’t.

  • @llamapenNHL

    There's a lot of question marks-- probably too many. The biggest issue (their defense) hasn't changed or improved enough for it to make them a playoff team. I really don't agree that their defense was good, but their goaltending was outstanding from both Binnington and Joel Hofer which probably made them seem a lot better. The biggest question mark is can they be that good again. I tend to think not, as Binnington has had his ups and downs, but he will have to be that good again for them to have any chance of making the playoffs. There's a chance Krug misses the entire season but he hasn't been great anyway. Does adding Suter and Joseph really make them any better? I'd say marginally at best. Another interesting question is can any of their prospects crack the roster? I think they're likely a year out from any rookies making a meaningful impact, but Dvorsky, Snuggerud and Lindstein have potential in the future. Overall I think they'll have a season similar to last year and miss the playoffs by a few points again.

    The blues definitely need more in the $16 million duo of Thomas and JK 25. If neighbors continues to develop, he will become the star that St. Louis is looking for.
    The fluctuation of the bottom six and the defensive pairings outside of the top pair was also fluctuating.
    This team cannot afford a slow start because that’s what cost them down the stretch last season.
    This team has to find consistency in the roster, in the lineup. The emergence of the Pacific division plus the teams in the Central are improved.
    I don’t know, and the organization doesn’t completely know who this roster is.
    The blues are battling for the third or fourth spot in the division. If blues make the playoffs, Winnipeg will not.

    I don't think the Blues make the playoffs. We were blessed by a lack of injuries last year and Amazing goaltending. If One of Rob Thom, Rouzy, Buch, Binner or Parayko are out for more than half the season were totally done for. If Binnington can't put up numbers like he did this last year were not making playoffs. I think this team is a seller at the deadline and finishes with about 80-84 points and hopefully draft around 7th-9th OVR.

    Honestly, I think the Blues made some really sneaky moves this year. This team is better than what some may say……
    IF we make the playoffs, which we could, we probably surpass Winnipeg as the WC team in the Central. I think the Jets are probably the 4th place team in the division, but the Blues could make it interesting, especially if the special teams improve and goaltending takes another step forward.
    It’s about a 50/50 shot at this point. I’m leaning towards no, but not for a lack of effort. It may be a difference of a few points that we miss out. This retool is almost over.
