I bought wipe on poly to finish the handle of the first hawk i am going to make. Was that a mistake? I see many people using linseed oil aswell as a few others.
I know this video was posted several years ago, but I do have a question: Have you ever done a pattern (such as a Celtic knot) down the whole length of the handle, and if so, how was that executed? I am preparing to burn a pattern like that on the handle of an axe that my friend is making, and I am wondering if you have any tips on how to do a full length pattern like that?
Those are fantastic brother, you have some real talent. I wish I had some drawing skills like that, they really are beautiful. My favorite of those is the one with the Pine at the top and the fire emblem down lower. Thank you for sharing your passion with us, I for one am grateful. Have a great weekend!!
Thanks. I like that side as well. The pine tree turned out great. Just put the first coat of Boiled linseed oil on it this morning. Part of me wants to get something laser etched on the head. Not sure I want to take it to that level yet. I guess much of it depends on pricing.
Very awesome. Just so happens that I'm cleaning up and rehanging 3 hatchets for my 3 step sons. Maybe I'll add a little artwork to the handles. The oldest boy is 13 and is thinking of joining the service later on. Just so happens that I have a very old hatchet head with U.S. stamped on it. So I picked that one to be his. All 3 boys are helping me with the sanding and I'm gonna let them drive the wedges in the handles themselves. We burn wood for heat in the winter, so these hatchets will get a lot of use for years to come. Anyways, thank you for the video and the idea.
I've watched a few of your cold steel hawk videos now I was wondering what model you like best? I assume it's the pipe hawk. I've bought a norse hawk and plan to modify it.
Right now it is the pipehawk. I bought a couple of riflemans for my two oldest boys we plan on modding. I haven't used those yet to get a good feel for them though.
so cool inspired by you i bought a similar one the other week :) now i'm just waiting for som coldsteel hawks ...and they are on the way. million thanks Crocket and have a great Christmas! from sweden
Are you using a Chisel tip on your burner , or the spear tip ?? Nice work with the Dragon Scales @ 1:14...I had one of these, back a few years....it only had the chisel tip...it was fun , to make signs for friends..and sell them around town.
Nicely done!! I do wood burning also and when you personalize your belongings this way it makes them that much more a part of yourself and your life style, which can be seen in your work. Take care my friend.
Question? The Cord on the Tool is only apx 4 FT. Can an Good Extension Cord be used with this Tool, If there is not an electric outlet close by,? the working area.?
Nice. I understand the interest in it for sure. When I was doing research to purchase the tool, it was interesting to see how good people were with the art.
You Sir are the Bob Ross of wood burning! Thanks for the heads up on what looks to be a great tool. Do you know if Hobby Lobby stocks this or did you get it on line?
I ended up grabbing scrap wood from the garage before I started anything. That helped get me going. But what I also found out is that the different woods will react differently to the burning. Looking forward to the shoot tonight.
Awesome creative work , Sir .... @0:26 ...That bear paw and mountain scene is gorgeous. All of your work is awesome.
I have the same kit and I have been making custom Tomahawks for my Scouts as an Eagle present. They turn out amazing! Got the idea from you!
That tree is especially cool!! Great job on the eagle head and bull antlers as well. Neat tool.
Appreciate it Brother. Loved the way that tree turned out. May have to duplicate that on another with a slightly different design.

Very well done! Just getting into this myself and the videos I have watched of yours are very inspiring!

That is cool and I'm sure something they will remember the rest of their lives.
Do you need to sand away the lacquer before burning designs into the handle?

Nice! love that fish scale pattern on the handle! good job brother!
Thanks.
Nice job and very creative ! Great work and the tree design looks great

Right on. Enjoy them when they arrive.

Mostly the spear tip.
Nicely done!! I do wood burning also and when you personalize your belongings this way it makes them that much more a part of yourself and your life style, which can be seen in your work. Take care my friend.
Agreed. Love how it personalizes everything.

Man your art is good. I like your hawk stuff and your carvings
Appreciate it. the carvings are a lot of fun. But to be honest they are bush league compared to what people can really do.
Where can I buy one of these
very cool! gorgeous artwork good sir! I used to do wood burning art when I was a kid. that was a lot of fun! thanks for sharing!
Nice. I understand the interest in it for sure. When I was doing research to purchase the tool, it was interesting to see how good people were with the art.
***** yeah you can really make some beautiful stuff, ESPECIALLY on our outdoor gear!
Does it work if your handle has a coating on it
I just sharpen six inch nails to different bits I need and use them in my iron.I like the different levels of heat on that iron though
Need one of these! I just use a cheap soldering iron. It works fine, but it’s imprecise.
Been carving them burning for years this tool works👌
After you reshape the handle and file the inside of the axe for a better fit how are you securing the axe head to the handle?
Of all the CS hawks I've had, have yet to have one where I can only sand and get a good fit. So I end up putting a wooden wedge in.
Awesome. Whats with the dark part on the end of the head though?
That is the differential heat treatment. Different heat treatment for the part that will be used as the blade.
How do you do the gnarling at the end of the hawk shaft?
Dremel with a sanding bit. put the dremel on an angle and use different sizes of sanding bits.
Thanks for your help!
I am new at this Carbon Paper they say is good to transfer any drawings on to the wood & then burn it in.
Should I use a Felt Magic Marker or a Regular #2 Pencil,? Markers stay on for good, & will be hard to remove
Where do you get the Tomahawks from. Thanks for the great videos
You Sir are the Bob Ross of wood burning! Thanks for the heads up on what looks to be a great tool. Do you know if Hobby Lobby stocks this or did you get it on line?
Appreciate it. Got mine at hobby lobby. May want to check to see if they still carry it though.
Amazon & E Bay has some good prices on them & some Include free Shp Which is a saving itself.
How do u like that granite that you are working on because my parents are looking at they type for the kitchen remodel
love it. easy to clean and it's been very hard and durable.
What color stain did you use?
It it easier to draw onto the wood a pattern you want to burn in & then just burn over the drawing etc.?
That's what I did. Penciled it in then burned over it. I try not to indent the wood though with the pencil. But just lightly draw it on.
Thanks. Appreciate it
Wow amazing job brother ! Looks awesome!
like your work. Got a question for you, do you burn first then stain or stain then burn?
Thanks Nate. I have always burned first then stained. That said I've never tried it the other way around. So not sure how that would or wouldn't work.
You have some amazing things there! Do you use anything to protect the wood after the burn?
Yes. I'll stain the wood and then the biggest part to protect the wood is boiled linseed oil. Usually put 2-3 coats on. Takes forever to dry though.
***** nice, looking forward to seeing that. I agree it takes longer to dry with the oils but definitely worth it over the lacquers and such imho.
Cut the BLO with mineral spirits(up to 50/50) will dry faster.
Stain the wood before or after soddering?
I stain after.
Is the artwork all freehand or stenciled?
Both. Fire was stenciled and the tree was actually a stencil I found online but had to free hand on the handle.
Time to quit your day job, dude! Those look awesome.
If only I could support myself with this stuff...
on one of those tomahawks there was a zia symbol an I right
You inspired me to make my own version ... modification.
FORMAFORM nice. Enjoy the process and hope it turns out great.
Cr0cket20 I made it already :) and it came out all great
If you are interested how it came out: th-cam.com/video/f0Ne6d_drRE/w-d-xo.html
Very nice work.
Appreciate it.
very nice done
My wife has that exact kit. I'll need some practice before I'm getting those results.
I ended up grabbing scrap wood from the garage before I started anything. That helped get me going. But what I also found out is that the different woods will react differently to the burning. Looking forward to the shoot tonight.
Cr0cket20 I'm looking at Timpanogos as we speak. I've missed her. I'm looking forward to the shoot too.
Looks like fun to me!
Crocket20 Your drawing is very nice.
thanks. gotta love google for the ideas.
Now if i could only draw worth a crap my hawks would cool too. But i can't so they just look normal :(
Thanks for inspiring me to do hawk similar to this check the video, gave you a shout out. Let me know what you think?
