As a Canadian...I have no idea what he's talking about. The only time you don't have a shower and toilet in the bathroom together is if it's some huge ensuite bathroom with a little toilet "closet". Or if it's just a half bathroom/powder room and just has a toilet and sink.
Sorry! We accidentally deleted the part with the pricing. We have it now in the description but...here it iss 1st apartment : 53,000 yen = 483USD 2nd apartment :95,000 yen = 866USD 3rd apartment :68,000 yen = 620 USD
The toilet in the bathroom is a common feature in British homes as well. Encouraging people to seek out and rent Kyo machiya sounds like a good way of ensuring the buildings' survival. 👍🏻
Dunno about Canada, but in some places that's just not very common. For instance in France and in Spain, every place I've lived they were in two separate rooms.
My "dream" bathroom is a wet room that is including the toilet so that Everything including the walls, floor and ceiling , can be hosed down and disinfected with a power washer , steamer , or even disinfecting cleaners , without having to get down on your knees to be scrubbing behind, in-between , or in the nooks and crannies of things.
Ha ha. I used to live in Japan and my bathroom was completely plastic. The walls, ceiling, floor, tub, toilet, sink were all connected to each other (aside from a few seams). There was a drain in the middle of the floor. Cleaning it was amazing since I just sprayed a cleaner over everything, waited a couple minutes, than used the shower wand to rinse everything off.

About the prices: it depends if you wNt to live in a shared house or in an apartment, at the beginning you have to pay for fire insurance, the contract and a first month in advance, some places also ask for “gift money” but not all places do this In my situation, i live in a share house, i paid 10k yen for the contract (wich had a discount because of corona a lot of people moved out of japan) And i pay 66k yen per month, that includes internet, and other fees. I used to live in a better sharehouse wich only asked for 55k yen but it closed because of corona.

Very interesting video! I'm American, so as you imagine, I was definitely surprised by some of the things here (like the one kitchen not including a stove!). Love the scenery!
Did you notice the stove that was included doesn't have the oven part? Most places only have a few burners plus a small chamber with a broiler (I was told that Japanese people usually broil fish with it but I made toast). The ovens I saw in Japan were combination microwave/toaster ovens and thus, much smaller than a Western oven.
The insides of the Apt's is so dark, and so 60's maybe 70's?, some places have AC wow that is good, 10th floor and no elevator?- natural tread mill exerciser I guess, no extra price for it, he he/.TH
Hello Dave! I am also from Vancouver Island and I would love to know more about what its like to stay in Japan! Been loving the videos. Thanks a bunch!
2:50 I'm not a fan either. Honestly that set-up just reminds me of hotel rooms. If it's just me, I don't really mind. But when you're living with other people, it's nice to have a bit more "privacy". Well, privacy probably isn't the right word, but you know what I mean... Like, people will knock on the bathroom door if they're in a hurry, like "I need to brush my teeth before going to work" or whatever. But they won't disturb you if you're in the toilet room. Personally, I'd go for 1 or 3. I don't like the second one just because of how close the neighbor's windows are. I really hate that. Of course, the machiya has the same thing, but it also has that courtyard inside so I guess that kind of makes up for it. Anyway, good luck with your apartment hunting, Dave!
for a future video, could you talk about what its like for american teachers in japan? Like, what locals think about americans teaching over there and how they find work?
The JET program is for you my friend. My friend did that program and while it had it's challenges it was overall a positive experience for him. Probably the biggest plus is that because you are part of that program it's far easier for you to find housing.
My apartment search: Which is cheapest? Okay I am living there for 5 years and adjusting the rest of my life around that. I would live in a kyo-machiya forever if I had any kind of long-term job nearby. Even with the inconveniences, it would be a dream!
If you will be looking for cheap accomodation, make sure that you are not offered any jiko bukken! I only plan to visit Japan sometime but that phrase is useful to know! 😂

“The toilet is the same room as the shower!”
Me an American “…yeah?”
I didn’t know that was unusual!
Trust
There is always an asshat who made horrible designs where the toilet is in a different room then the shower

Other cultures do things differently duh
In Germany it is normal, too.
Don't think I've ever seen the toilet NOT be in the same room as the shower. Think that's the most common by far in western countries at least.
Would be nice if you could show the rent for each of these apartments.

Here in Sweden you always have the toilet in the same place as the shower.. but then our bathrooms are often much bgger and tiled all over :)

I’ve always found Dutch staircases to be dangerously steep too , although it’s what you get used to I suppose?

Love Kyoto! Rent is reasonably affordable but food and clothing. and electronics are pricey. Goal is to live there some day.
I can't believe the rent on these apartments is so low considering their views and how close they are to things.
