  • In 1973, one of Hollywood’s most beloved actors Marlon Brando sat with talk show host Dick Cavett to discuss his new found insight on America’s relationship with the Indian, and how that relationship is falsely promoted in schools and in Hollywood films.

At the end of the day, in modern talkshow interviews, you don't actually get to know what the interviewee is about. And I think that's their purpose - you go on the show, talk crap for a while, then leave, and no-one is any the wiser as to who you are or what you're about. It's like a ruse, a trick. There's no-one in there worth seeing, so that's exactly what they show you - no-one.

In his acting school the teacher said to the class "students I want you to be chickens on a quiet Sunday afternoon in any town America. I also want you to know that nuclear war has just been declared and the bombs are launched and incoming." The entire class ran around clucking loudly and flapping their arms up and down mimicking scared chickens. Marlon sat very still and quiet in his chair pretending to lay an egg. The teacher said; "Marlon, the nuclear bombs are on the way." He simply replied; "I am a chicken what do I know about nuclear bombs.”

As an African and I rarely comment in TH-cam (maybe 3 times since 2004) , I feel obliged to do it again.
Marlon Brando is a true man (in my definition), he is not afraid to be himself, speaks about the things that are important to him and swims against the current without fearing the consequences. We here call such men lions in Africa. Impressive is also his education and psychological knowledge, simply said if you want to be a man Marlon Brando is a role model for all young people even today.

Brando was probably the coolest man that ever lived, he had it all and he didn’t give a shit, no one could ever out do him or make him look small, he had that ability to be top dog without trying. he was flawed as well though, to pretend he wasn’t is to misrepresent the man. He hurt those who loved him but he was a complicated character, one of the most fascinating of all time. The power of his charisma was second to none really, he could sit in a chair saying nothing and still dominate a room full of powerful characters, he did it on film, anyone else on screen became secondary. I've studied the guy long time, and seen things differently so many times I have lost count, the man is unsolvable, a unique spirit.

Astonishing to see how far we have fallen in a few short decades. Listening to this, you realise how articulate both the host and the guests were; the humour was witty and didn’t rely stupid sound effects or gimmicks to keep the attention of the audience and they discussed issues of substance.

He was careful not to speak in sweeping terms or to exaggerate. You notice he was not reactive, even when Cavett tried to draw him in to some kind of reaction. It has taken me 38 yrs to understand why for Marlon Brando it was so much more important to talk about the injustices committed against the Native people than about his role in THE GODFATHER, by far my fav movie of all time.
Brando with all his contradictions was in my opinion basically a good human being worthy of our respect and admiration.

Are you serious? you would be hard pressed to find a show or movie where anyone but a white man was the villain and minorities were shown in anything but a positive, glowing light.

Simin, you have been duped by mainstream media and the rest of the machine.
They had to encounter real racist bullshit back then. Any racist bullshit that happens today is pretty much anecdotal.

This has been the template for the film industry within Hollywood, to manipulate the audiences' perception into believing a fake equality, given that the human race has multiplied in numbers over these past decades whilst using these minorities and stereotypes to benefit their financial spreadsheets.

I was thinking to myself since I'm so attuned to so much noise during talk shows - a la Fallon, Kimmel, Colbert ( I haven't really watched old guys like Carson) - something feels different about this compared to today and your comment really hits it on the head. people can't bear a few seconds of silence nowadays without feeling they need to fill it in with something. I'm guilty of this even in the car driving, so used to having something on anything. but yeah, sorry to go on a tangent, just really liked your comment. made me think.

That’s nervous laughing when there’s a dead silence a lot of people can’t handle that and Marlon Brando is a very deep thinker and he takes his time to speak because he’s really thinking about what he’s saying and people don’t know what to do when he silent but it’s definitely nervous laughter

I don't see him as calm here. On the outside yes... but it looks like on the inside like Brando is holding back a tiger, or gorilla. Which is what is keeping Cavett in check here. And I think it's what makes him fascinating to watch.

This interview is so candid, real and honest from Marlon Brando's heart to ours. I can in great awe of such a vast demonstration of feelings of inequality which Hollywood probably just feels movies aren't real but real (character) actors/actresses would in fact feel very different based on their ability to tap in the real people at a deep level of consciousness. Thank you so much Mr. Brando for sharing yourself and your gifts (darma) with us all!
