    Second and third those comments that you've really hit upon a compelling way to teach a general truth with this video. 5:45 you introduce a handy rule of thumb for lens selection that I'd never considered before. Is this photograph about 1 thing, 2 things, or 3 things? I'd never thought to ask myself that question. I live in a beautiful city of seaside hills and fog (San Francisco), I own lovely gear, and I understand exposure. But my compositions are weak, often very weak, and "rule of thirds" only gets me so far. This video, the thought behind it, is just the change of mindset that can help people out of ruts. Thank you. More like this, please.

    Thanks Andy, love your videos! Grateful to be a beginner photographer in today's day in age with individuals like yourself and other great youtubers sharing such valuable information.
    My challenge is knowing what lenses to bring. I love the xf 10-24 and 50-140, but sometimes the weight comes into question for those longer 20km+ hikes. I also own the 16-80mm but just bringing that 1 lens I always find I want to go a bit wider or a bit more tele. A constant struggle of gear and weight! It may just be practice with the mid range zoom to make photos that work. Just love the look of those ultra wide 3d images and, the tele compression look of mountains. Something about the mid range zoom always seemed a bit boring for me.

    • @AndyMumford
      @AndyMumford  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks so much, glad you enjoy the channel. I'm the same as you, I don't find the mid range interesting at all and only carry a wide zoom and the tele zoom. I prefer the 55-200 though, as it's lighter and smaller, so I'm never tempted to leave it behind.

    Taking a High Sierras trip soon and this video was so well timed! Thank you for your clarity. I’m going to work on choosing my focal length with more intention.

    I currently watch a lot of videos on YT on landscape photography to prepare a trip to the Dolomites in september. And this one is, by far, the most useful I have seen on the choice of lens thematic and composition for landscape photography. Thank you so much to share your experience. It's priceless.

      Thanks so much for the comment, really glad you found the video useful. You'll love the Dolomites, it's wonderful in September. I've been there every September since 2017, and I'll be there again this September, so say hello if you see me out shooting.

      @@AndyMumford Hello Andy. I'm currently in the Dolomites and I would like to shoot the Tre Cime Di Lavaredo. Which Time is more photogenic in your opinion ? Golden hour in the morning or golden hour in the evening ?
      Hope to see you there :)

      @@clementg7247 I was there a few nights ago. It actually works well at both times of day, and it’s great in the blue hour too when there is alpenglow and colour in the sky, but I prefer sunset

    Wow, one of the best videos I've ever seen on this subject and landscape photography in general. Thank you very much! BTW, I especially love your super wide angle shits. I'm buying a 10-24 because of you :)

    Thank you, you have reinforced some of my experience in using different focal lengths; particularly telephoto. I agree that foreground is important for ultra wide. I like using telephoto to get the landscape abstract. Please keep the videos coming!

    A joy to watch your videos. Useful, clear, and illustrative as usual. Thank you so much! Not to mention your stunning photography thrown in with those examples, they evoke wanderlust on a high level. Not to mention gear lust for those who are not entirely covered in the lense range. :)

      Thanks so much Arpad, really glad you enjoy the videos and find them useful. I actually think you can get by with just 2 zooms for most uses. I usually only take a wide angle zoom and a telephoto zoom with me on my trips

    Excellent video Andy! I‘m doing landscape photography for 5 years now and have never seen a link between the different lens types and the elements included in the frame. This is an excellent guide for when you‘re not sure where to start at a new scene. Brilliant!
