  • I have been shooting the Hoyt Axius Alpha for the past few months as part of ArcheryTalk’s 2020 Hunting Bow Shootout.
I’ve outfitted the Axius Alpha in a Black Gold Pro sight and Trophy Taker Smackdown Pro Click arrow rest.
As for specs, the Axius Alpha has a compact axle-to-axle length of 29.5 inches, brace height of 6 1/8 inches, IBO rated speed of 342 feet per second, and draw lengths that are adjustable from 28 to 30 inches with these cams or 25 to 28 inches on the smaller cams.
The Axius Alpha carries an MSRP starting at about $1000 if you like black or another $100 for other color and camo options.
This is Hoyt’s shortest ever flagship-level hunting bow and it comes loaded with features. New for this year is the Integrate arrow rest mounting system. This was first seen Mathews hunting bows last year and it allows you to securely clamp down your arrow rest without worry of it rotating if you buy the optional QAD Integrate arrow rest.
Also new this year is an updated ZTR cam system, which boasts a firmer back wall than any Hoyt I’ve ever shot. Other features include a roller cable guard, rear stabilizer mount, and Shock Pod vibration dampeners.
Hoyt uses the X-Act grip on the Axius Alpha, which I also shot on the Helix last year. It’s a fine grip and fits my hand nicely, but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t wish the adjustable grip on the Carbon RX-4 wasn’t included on this bow.
I suppose we should talk about actually shooting the bow, so let’s look at draw cycle. I did a hunting bow draw cycle comparison video a few weeks back and the Axius Alpha finished second and that was largely because of light the bow feels at 70 pounds. There is a slight dip into the valley, but this bow is one I can happily shoot all day - plus it’s very easy to let down.
After the shot, I am finding the Axius to be a bit louder than some other bows I’m testing this year. It’s far from obnoxious, but this one seems to make more noise than the Helix I shot last year.
To test for speed, I set up the Axius with 70 pounds of draw weight and 30 inches of draw length. With a 350-grain Gold Tip Platinum Pierce arrow I saw speeds of 322 feet per second and with a 477-grain Gold Tip AirStike arrow I saw an average of 279 feet per second.

Hoyt definitely has an easier, smoother draw than Mathews no matter which model you are comparing. That’s why I prefer Hoyt.

I chose the axius over the vrx because the draw was so much nicer and more comfortable.

      That's because vxr is faster.

Nock high tear typically means your top cam is a little ahead of the bottom, I'd imagine that you set them up with a draw board though

I’ve had really good luck with my Hoyts, though I don’t normally get camo.

Nah, I have two. One in Kuiu and one in Timber. Neither one has faded or chipped.
