Hey bike companies; bring back the simple, lightweight, durable, affordable bike like this!!!! This is the type of bike all us old guys and gals started out on....
That was my first street legal, mode of transportation in 1976. Exact same color and love that sound! It was a great ride cause you could ride it on and off road. It took me around to several girl friends houses and I am sure the parents loved seeing me roll up on that beast. Remember riding it to High School, freezing my fingers off during the Virginia winter. Lots of memories, thanks for posting this up...
My first bike was this model. I was 15 years old perhaps 120 lbs. soaking wet. A damn fine cornering and jumping machine, hell it didn't even know I was on it..lol.
Thanks for posting these cool videos Kaplan America. Takes me back to some very memorable times in my childhood back in the seventies being around these cool bikes!! Awesome!!
Excellent machine, brother in law had one in eastern colorado,in the late 70s,man I had some fun on that bike.longest wheelie I ever rode,I rode on that machine.over 3 miles
Oh wow, in 1977 I bought a used DT360 from Japan imported by an Army Captain at Fort Hood, Texas. I reconditioned it with the sorriest tools you ever seen but had the paint changed from factory brown to factory green with new decals. I rode it full time till Jan/81 when I was hit by a car and lost part of my leg. Ten years later I wish I hadn't sold it slightly damaged for $50. I still miss that bike. Thanks for the upload.
Had a 1974 DT 360 torque induction in 1977 first bike I owned and was bar none the best bike for trail and street riding that Yamaha ever produced. Gave $ 400.00 for it in 1977 sure wish I could buy one for that price now. Good investment for sure!
These are bad ass. I have a Yamaha xt 500 and a TT500. I'm looking for a DT400. A GT80 was my first real motorycle. I think the Cafe Racer craze is on the way out and these vintage enduros will be hot real soon.
My dad had the same bike growing up 75 bought the same bike he sold it when he went to basic training year later bought it back and in 1985 got stolen 1 bike he talks about built well tough bike
These big bore 2 strokes were great off road. On road.....eh. Many were rode a year or so and junked or stripped for dirt use. Honda 4 strokes were ridden tens of thousands of miles. More expensive but that was what the serious on/off riders bought. I loved the DTs looks sound but only would have bought a SL/XL.
Very beautiful bike in great shape. I have the 175 version and my brother in law has one identical to yours in same shape. Fantastic bikes. Is that BUDDY REPERTON from Christine ? Lol. Thanks for showing us the bike. Just lay off of CUNNINGHAM !
I had one of these .When I was 16 years old. I ran the dog shit out of it in north Idaho. It never broke down . I gave to my dad when I joined the army at 16. Top speed was 83 mph on the freeway. And it would climb any thing. The fork brace on it is not stock.
No kidding it would climb anything. I was going to climb a huge hill of dirt but checked it out first. It turned out that the backside had been scooped out. Lol.
The early editions of the enduro machines by Yamaha, had the designation AT1..125cc, CT1....175cc, DT1.....250cc, RT1......360cc. In later years they called all models DT. Hence DT100, DT125, DT175, DT250, DT400. The bike Ken is riding most likely is the 2nd gen. RT2. Trinidad & Tobago. West Indies.
My dad bought one with low miles in 1976 paid 500 for the bike and had to go to another county to buy it had it till 1985 dad sold it one time bought it back come back from service but what happen to it was it got stolen he said one of the best enduro out there dad grew up around them old bikes like to find one one day but only one year only be cool to have
I had the 72 Silver RT2 360 in south Africa in 1972 and when we weren't surfing we were bundu bashing. picked up quite a few women with this bike. and it never let me down. well built machines. we used to crry our boards on the side or under our bums on the seat but the cops were problem even back then. I suspect parts are now a struggle and expensive now especially in the UK they are non existant in england
makes me want to dig mine out and see if I can break my other leg hitting a car again :| main thing I hated, you smell like a dirty 2-stroke after riding and everyone would curl their noses :)

@@sticks0012 Same in all regards. Miss the sound of that bike.
Those are the motorcycles that transitioned lots of kids from mini bikes to the streets.
Me and my father just got done doing a full restoration on this exact bike a lot of work but turned out beautiful
Big reed valve engine, MX frame; this bike defined the "Enduro".
The DT80 was my first bike. I've been hooked ever since.
I love hearing the stories these old timers post on this channel. 😁

It has the two stroke knock ...... needs rebuilt if it's going to last
I'm pretty sure its just the exhaust "popping"
piston slap for sure, Not exhaust popping bro
I would think it would just need seals the bottom ends probably fine and the top end's probably fine
I remember. The MX versions were Grey. Nice bro.
I love those bikes
I have one for sell
I had one, but it had a compression relief valve though and it was blue stock. I miss it.
the 1974's all had automatic compression releases tied to kick starter, you could drop your leg weight on it and they'd fire off.

You can see that it has torque, it goes with little effort.
My DT 125 was identicle cept for the engine and Burgundy tank. GYT Kit also.
Yz 490, incredible hp
If I could only find one with the title for a good price
I've got one that I have considered selling.
I had a 360 dt that looks a lot like that one, same color
360 actually had way more hp than dt 400, but, they were all fast bikes..
Upper con rod bearing yesterday...

If you could rebuild the engine for 500 in parts. Why did you spend 1100 on a detail and air filter?
