Molly is impossible to sideline. If you try to sideline her, she'll literally become the plot itself because she has so much chaotic energy. Good for her. Also, if Nomura made Star VS, he would become Tetsuya "Flannels and Skirts" Nomura.
The portal scene in King's Tide would've been better served if the sequence of events looked more like this: 1: Amity begs Luz to go with them to safety. 2: The Collector notices King is fleeing with Luz and pulls him away. 3: This is when Luz stops. 4: The portal starts collapsing. 5: The vine magic is pulled out, both to keep a hold on King and stop the portal from collapsing. It's self-sacrifice, sure, and it's not ideal. But the stakes are far more immediate, and it makes more sense because she still wants to go through the portal before it closes. She's not an idiot, she knows Eda can take care of herself, she still wants to get to safety, she just wants King to also be there with her.
I feel like Luz's rampant need for self sacrifice stems from her former obsession with high fantasy adventure. It's no doubt she's grown a lot from the first few episodes but maybe there's still lingering quirks. Like, think about how many high fantasy YA books have a character sacrifice themself to atone or just to get their friends safe. I sometimes feel like Luz does that subconsciously because she's just absorbed so many of those stories. She's not the most egregious self sacrifice character(⭐) but it fits that she doesn't know that this is a problem that she needs to stop doing.
Just a slight correction, during the bit about Escaping Expulsion Ginger says Anne from Amphibia is Taiwanese, when that couldn't be farther from the truth, she's Thai. I was surprised hearing this coz just looking at Anne, she couldn't EVER be Taiwanese to me. She just looks Thai. Also, something really interesting is the difference in Luz's memory of her conversation with her mom in Yesterday Lie and the actual scene. You can search it up easily on TH-cam, just type something along the lines of "Camila and Luz Yesterday's Lie vs Follies at the coven day parade". But basically, in Luz's flashback, she remembers her mother's request for her to come back as final. She remembers it as an order. But in the actual scene, Camila is BEGGING Luz to come back ! She might as well be on her knees apologizing. She says "I didn't mean to push you away, I swear things will be different !" There's so much to take from this contrast, honestly, how Luz burdens herself with a choice she doesn't have to make because "mother knows best", when all Camila wants is her daughter's well being. And in turn, Camila feels she has failed Luz as a mother, because Luz might as well have ran away.
I kinda figured the slip-up with Gus not noticing Willow was a fake was partially because his concentration was split through the illusion and he couldn't focus on her clearly enough to realize it
One good thing to look forward to about season 3, the writing team is treating the shorter season more like a challenge than a detriment. They want no pity. So no "it was cut short" excuses for season 3.
Love the part with hollow mind. Every other youtuber covering it is soo in love in episode, but the group lays down the facts that the most interesing thing in this episode is its background and that sucks.
Once I got into a bit of an argument on tiktok when I said that "all of the characters of color have more depth and growth than their white counterparts" I was flooded with "Hunter is a grimwalker!!! Amity is a prodigy!!!" Like-- Willow is a prodigy. Gus is a prodigy. Luz is basically reinventing magic faster and better than anyone before her. Also, it doesn't fucking matter that Hunter is a grimwalker if that doesn't change anything whatsoever. Hell, at this point it just feels like useless trivia that pops up in the corner with his stupid fucking face smiling with a thumbs up. Like-- congrats to him on being a zombie??? We get it, Phillip is a piece of shit who knows dark magic, that doesn't make /him/ interesting. I am so sick of hunter stans.
I always found him being a grimwalker hilarious because it means 100% of him is artificial: His importance to the story, his stakes, his relationships, and his very fucking being is completely artificial.
the funny part about him being a grimwalker is that we literally didn't see it being explored (at least not yet). it's always brought up as a point that makes his character interesting but it's only potential interest as of now. in the show currently, he found out he was a grimwalker, was seemingly distressed about it, and then deliberately asked luz to not bring it up. the entire reason it could be interesting is because it can be explored in an interesting way: what are the repercussions of him being a grimwalker, how does that impact him, what does he feel about it? all of these questions are currently mostly unanswered and fully unexplored. the reason people find him interesting is because they can make up answers to those questions, and they can explore these concepts on their own, not because the show is actually doing anything interesting with him. his depth is fully made up by fans.
was there an episode I missed where they actually explained what a grim-walker is? it could mean necromancer, it could mean zombie, it could mean squib. it's a seemingly meaningless "other" designed most insidiously for all the minority viewers to more easily relate to the otherwise straight white boy.
Honestly, Hunter's relationships with the main cast reminds me of a meme regarding Asta and Noelle from Black Clover. The latter thinking "Can't tell if I have a crush or if my traumatized ass is just idolizing this person for being vaguely nice to me." because that's basically what's going on with Hunter.
I agree that Hunter should have stayed a shitposting shitstirring trashboy because that was genuinely hilarious and would have actually added to the melodrama that Terrace wanted while actually cutting down on the time spent on the melodrama angst. Luz in Reaching Out unfortunately still had some guilt, her actions were still motivated from guilt. She would’ve already made coping mechanisms to deal with her dad’s death, but those mechanisms would’ve come hand in hand with her Mom. Now Luz is alone, and not just that but Camilla is alone too. They depended on each other on this day. “But this year I’m not with her and I don’t have any flowers” looking back on her conversation during Yesterday’s lie; the entire “did you hate living with me that much”, and her mom begging her to stay. It’s not just her father’s death. Luz feels alone, and also understand her own mother’s feelings that day of being alone. They always supported each other on that day and this time they can’t, and (to Luz) it was her who chose to leave, so it’s not just the loss of her dad, but the loneliness. And so Luz does what she does best, “and when you told me about the problem with your Dad…”, “I just needed a distraction”. Kinda like Follies again

I don't really get why anyone would see Amity as a "main character". I mean beside Luz, Eda and King are the closest thing to Main characters. At best I feel Amity is a Romantic Foil to Luz. Her role seems best when she's used to emphasize Luz's traits, both positive and flawed.

I believe the same thing as you guys in that, Hunter was so funny and enjoyable in Separate Tides, like, I was so ready to have a new favorite villain who would dance around, make quips, like if Spiderman were a villain to a certain extent. Then again in Hunting the Palismen when the first few minutes were Luz and Hunter having sibling energy and it was great! I really dislike how they took that away for just angst and trauma dumping cuz while I get he's been manipulated by Belos so he's got a hard time breaking away from that until Hollow Mind, it still took a funny villain and made him boring and angsty to the point where I really am just annoyed by seeing him in fanart and edits like, "Okay, hes a zombie who listens to emo bands, cool, can we talk about wholesome gays yet???" I remember Dana (I think) releasing art of beta versions of TOH and one of them was Hunter and Luz hiding from an angry Eda, and HUNTER Looked like a feral kid ready to start fighting eda with nothing but teeth and a stick and I would've LOVED a 10 year old feral Hunter rather than the edgy one we have here Ps. I only thing I like about Hollow Mind is the Collector. Theres nothing else fun about Hollow Mind. Collector is the greatest character theyre amazing and fun. In fact, the Collector is singlehandedly the best character imo. With the whole playful 10 year old being from the stars, a fantastic design, and them being all powerful and positive. I don't know what they'll do with the Collector, but in the few episodes they appeared, Collector singlehandedly stole the show for me.
Hearing you all talk about publishers, and editors and mandated fun. VS Dana and all her bad ideas etc. etc. I remember that episode in season 1 where publishers are depicted as evil demons that put you in boxes and force you to make popular things you hate and squeeze the life out of you. How un-subtle can you get Good Job ladies!

10:20 - 11:20 Just had to say, Ginger, that was one of the most profound things I have ever heard and really left me thinking about how I handled my of baggage and as you said, it is unfair to me to feel like my pain must be showed to the world, to find validation in others that things really aren't alright rather than to find that validation within myself or those close around me. I had a whole book planned with a character going through this inane amount of hardship just so I could feel that it was okay to feel bad and that really isn't the way to do it. I'm in a better place but there was still this little part that wanted to share all the worst feelings and experiences, I already planned a re-write as the draft is filled with novice writer mistakes but now it can be filled with more substance than "please feel bad for this character", that being very much the entirety of Hunter's character at this point, "please feel bad for this boy".

I watch these shows primarily for the entertainment value rather than the lore and story crafting so as the Golden Guard the character was a lot more fun and enjoyable. Hunter constantly brings the mood down which squanders my enjoyment.

Holy shit, I didn't even realize the Phillip killed his brother. That seems like a pretty fucking important thing to just... leave in the background like fucking trivia. Maybe I'm just an idiot who needs to pay better attention, but that also seems like something that can't be misunderstood or forgotten, idk. Also what pisses me off about Labrynth Runners, in the same vein as Hunter realizing that Willow was an illusion before Gus, is when Gus is having a panic attack in the climax, who is the one that comforts him? His best friend of many years who's helped him before? No, it's this guy he's met only a few times. The way Willow just looks at Hunter like, 'you got it', encouraging him to go to Gus just really salts my apples. Lovely podcast, everything is chaotic fun, but every point is concisely made.
To toss in my two bits to the conversation on Gus, despite how season 2 of the owl house is very mid, I’ve gotta admit that Gus’ solo episode and his prior episodes really made him grow on me, not only for his fantastic growth and the common thing I share with him on a desired field/skill being undervalued, but also as I came to a realization that with his desired coven of illusions. The explicit way how the majority of the BI (Boiling Isles) and other covens downplays how powerful it can be, it reminded me of how various art mediums from acting, art, music, poetry, dancing, etc, are treated irl in a capitalist system that devalues it so much and miss how some forms of art are so powerful and evocative can be, and yet when you’re an artist in that system after making it, that inspiration can be so easily lost with constantly churning out new work that’s new and not derivative. 48:32 To be personal on this briefly, I felt what that’s like for two years prior to and during the pandemic with trying to get work as an animator/artist, with little comeuppance which resulted in frustration, anger and depressive episodes as a result of that, and how I worried that I couldn’t do anything else because art is all I’ve ever been good at and feel passionate doing. and I cannot stress how inspiring it is to see Gus overcomes that step by step in his development since as of writing, I’m moving next week for university to pick up the first art degree I started in ‘17 and finish it to help with my job search That’s what really made me like him so much more for his genuine development and the metaphors regarding his desired coven were relative to my own anxieties regarding my desired field of art and unsuccessfully trying to break through into a job primarily relative to it, and it’s disappointing how much his growth is overshadowed. Gus deserves better.
If you need another trope Native American character that is only there one or twice for spiritual things and does not have their own personality. Like name one main or secondary native or native coded character (if they are non human [why]) character that is consistently in the show and is not john redcorn from king of the hill and from the past ten years. Hispanic or Hawaiian characters don't count as they are their own racial groups and deserve their own representation Nearly all the characters I have seen that are in well known media don't even get names they are there either for a joke or an moral. Main ones I can think of are Charles littlebull (lokota) form Nickelodeon's the casa grandes (2019- cancelled in February of 2022) And Molly Shahnyaa Mabray (Alaskan native) from pbs kids molly of denali (2019-) The only real representation I remember as a kid was Pocahontas, brother bear and yakari a french book series turned animated show from 2005 Of course there are indi works from native people which is great. Such as the tv show rez dogs, and rutherford falls even stuff on TH-cam such betsy lee's no evil, who has inspiration coming from all over the America's especially Myan and Aztec but also Alaskan native and native north American culture and dress which is great but, it would be nice if we could get a chance for kids to see themselves with out having to dig only to find 5 minutes of content.

Someone clearly had ideas for the Golden Guard, potentially good ones. But it just dissolves into this gloopy mass the moment the mask comes off, we get the scene from the pilot, and the character collapses into "A bad, but sad, boy". Just... Have SOMETHING more than a bleached, half-remembered Zuko clone from 7 years ago. Even him being a duplicate of Caleb doesn't really mean anything, because Philip just treats them all as disposable, inevitably traitorous pawns. There's no deeper bond, or hidden guilt Philip's hiding that keeps forcing him to bring Caleb back to life by proxy. If all the Golden Guards were just some powerless orphans Belos had adopted... What would change?

Finally someone says it, belos looks just like good ol Eddie T. (And that's canonically his last name) Hunter. Though the cover art for number of the beast would look just dope with Eda's old owl beast form.
I feel like eclipsed lake would’ve worked better if belos didn’t bench hunter like he sent hunter there with all the undertones of if you fail I’ll kill you that are in his voice. It would give hunter more of a reason to be there and would make some of hunters freaking out make more sense while also maybe giving him some of the fun dialogue and personality of his intro episode. It gives him way more of a complex character with strengths and weaknesses. Not sure if im articulating this well Edit: I wrote this before y’all talk about what i just said with the façade lol
I knew Huntlow would happen the moment Hunter's face was shown. He is the fan favorite angsty white boy, and what happens to all angsty white boys? They're paired up with some girl. Doesn't even matter who. And because Luz and Amity were already taken, Willow was next in line. It's never about the couple, it's always about the fans getting to see their favorite white trash experience romance. It's annoying favoritism at best and a gross self-insert situation at worst. Willow has the power to send people to the backrooms and she's still reduced to being Hunter's crush. Since Labyrinth Runners, fans like to say that Hunter finally found his support group with Willow and Gus, which is sweet at first, but then you notice that those same fans won't include Luz, as if Hunter replaced her. Big eyebrow raiser. The one thing I liked about this episode was Gus using the fire glyph. A bit of a callback to Through the Looking Glass Ruins, but also seeing Luz's friends learn from her is very nice. Same for when Amity uses the plant glyph in Reaching Out.

@@LilianOrchard it's honestly even more disheartening when people point it out and hunter stans (for lack of better terms) like pretending it's not an issue and even defend themselves. it's really disheartening because it's so noticeable to anyone who pays half attention to what kind of fan work (mostly fan art and "meta" in my personal experience since i don't read the owl house fics) gets made, ESPECIALLY when it's something involving willow and gus. people are replacing luz with hunter and luz is frequently reduced to being "amity's girlfriend". it IS happening.
I thought I was the only one who thought Hunter was replacing Luz. To be honest, he should of just ended up independent. Not siding with either the Hexsquad nor Belos. Just have it be him and Flapjack, make Hunter like a C plot or something
I think Hunter would've been a much better character if he wasn't connected to Belos' backstory because that gave him in some way too much importance. Let him be the sassy jerk under a mask until he finds out about his predecessors and decides to still be sassy, jerky, but with a cynic edge, chaotic neutral. Or let him be a normal soldier who tries to climb the ranks and competes with Kikimora to be Belos' new right-hand instead of making him take roles that other characters are capable of.
This idea that Hunter's connection to Belos made him too important is a falsehood. Not every villain's dragon is an important character, and for all his focus Hunter contributes nothing to the plot.
The discussion of Luz's self-sacrificing nature, and holding herself to unreasonable high standards, was one of my favorite threads throughout the video. Because while I do adore Luz as a character, Dana 100% goes too far with this aspect of her character. And it's not a good thing because it has yet to be addressed fully within the show. That all being said, I'm hopeful for season 3 addressing this (I know you guys aren't as hopeful... But I am). And that's because Luz's actions finally had a tangible consequences that's impossible for her to ignore- her losing King to the collector (and getting left behind). Her younger brother, a younger child, was sacrificed because she unnecessarily stayed behind to 'hold the portal together' to 'make sure everyone (but her) got through.' And because of her actions, King was forced to sacrifice himself to save Luz directly. If Luz had gone through when she had a chance, when Amity begged her, she and King probably would have both been safe. (That's how I saw the scene). Now Luz has to feel that pain herself. Now she has to feel what's it's like to be left behind when someone she cares about has to sacrifice themselves for her. And it's even worse, because King didn't do this because of a character flaw in himself- he did it because Luz forced them both into it with her own actions (Not maliciously or intentionally, but still). I want, and am hopeful, we'll get a scene between Luz, Amity, and Camila where they talk about specifically what happened to King, and Amity and Camila make Luz see that the pain she's feeling from what King did- it's the pain they all feel everytime Luz sacrifices herself. And then finally, finally, it would click with her that this character trait in her is a flaw that she needs to fix. (And of course, have the reassurance that she doesn't deserve to hate herself for what happened. None of this is to bash on Luz, this is me just hoping for good character scenes.) Ultimately, one of you said this- The Owl House has tight writing. I think it was pretty purposeful to have a scene at the end that has Luz trying to sacrifice herself again, but ends up causing someone else (King) to sacrifice themselves for her sake. It would have been nice if this character flaw was addressed before now and worked on more, but this represents the ultimate (and purposeful) break for me. Dana, you have something good here. Please deliver finally on this aspect (Better late than never).

Funny thing, when I was nearing the end of the video, I was actually wondering about your thoughts on The Ghost and Molly McGee since I knew you had good first impressions of it, and then RIGHT at the very end, I got my answer. 😆
As an artist I come up with new cool character designs constantly but often the story already has enough fleshed out characters that trying to develope any more would bloat it, so I let them be minor supporting characters or one-off/ "cameo" characters who don't need to be developed more than their appearence and name and maybe a very basic personality. If they rally wanted to get Hunter's design in there somewhere they could have given him a role in just a few episodes in something and saved the time for developing the other characters
I was honestly suprised skara wasn't a part of the group. It felt like they were gearing up to have her their because illusion, plant, abomination, and bard were the covens that got the most focus. Like skara could have gotten a whole episode of breaking off her friendship with Boscha and becoming a part of the group. And in a side note a much better relationship for willow, i'm still salty about the injustice done to one of the best characters.
What's even worse about hunter stealing scenes is that he is literally a block of wood. How insulting is that, imagine you finally get your own episode but then he just rolls in to literally stand there with that weird frowny face someone carved on him.
ony 37 minutes in so far and while every point brought up was very insightful i wanted to point out the bit about studio execs getting blamed for everything CZ LIKE IT'S TRUE and it's kinda funny. fandom likes to act like the execs are a scapegoat for poor writing because they just can't fathom that shows they like can just fumble and there HAS to be a malicious intent somewhere there instead of the more mundane "well... people mess up" edit: "snot thot" is the funniest shit ive heard ever edit2: the discussion about belos in the "eclipse lake" section is SO good. i find it's the problem with viewing morality as like a very black and white thing (in a "a person can just be either a good person or a very obvious seething villain" way), because abhorrent people CAN be just Some Guy and most bad people are!! which is what makes them more dangerous!! because they could be ANYBODY around you and if you aren't keeping yourself in check /that could be you/!! edit3: the last stretch of this podcast makes me want skara as the last major kid in the cast sooo bad (AND be willow's girlfriend??? why couldn't we have had this instead)
It crazy to see the complete change in how you guy's feel about this season compared to season 1. Now it brings to questions if season 2 was Diana's true vision would season 1 still be as good had she did it her original way.

Season 3 has 3 44-minute specials. We already have 1 released, so hopefully in one of the other 2 Luz accomplishes her promise and we see Luz and Amity going on the most boring date ever.
My random thoughts on the season. Overall, the second half felt like that's exactly when the team realized they didn't have enough time so they had to rush it as quick as they could. Where the season ends feels like where the second half of season 3 was meant to start and the first half would be random adventures of the C.A.T.S crew. I got most of my info about the season second hand from the fandom so I missed a few things here and there. One day I watched a video about Hallow Mind from the shit hole that is the Round Table, and it was the first time I ever saw Collector show up ever (which was something you forgot about, don't blame you.) As soon as I saw them, a pit formed in my stomach because god damnit, they were doing it again. They spent a season and a half building up the main villain as this evil threat that should be feared, then it was like "just kidding, this is the main villain." Amphibia did it, Star VS did it, Gravity Falls did it too an point. It's something that only works if the villain is introduce in the first season, or the first villain is beaten at the end of the first season. From Hallow Mind onward, I had a massive fear that they would try to redeem Bellos by trying to justify why he killed his brother and saying he was really sorry about it. It was a secret weapon they had that they could use at anytime to justify redeeming him. Again, Amphibia did the exact same thing with a character who tried to murder a child. And there's still time, who says the goo ball can't be a good guy. Elsewhere and Elsewhen was a stupid episode for me. As an fan of time travel, it sucks that it was done in the worst way with Grandfather Paradox stuff. There was absolutely an better way to do Bellos is backstory, it could've been as simple as have him just have a flashback about it. Just don't have Luz be THAT important to Phillip becoming Bellos. And it's made worse because the B plot was way more interesting with Eda and her dad, it could've been about that instead. I got myself hyped for an version of King's origin that just didn't happen. I wanted King just to be an monster that isn't native to this part of the isles and his dad is just some deadbeat. I wanted that episode from Fresh Prince where Will meets his dad but animated. Anyway, that's all for me. Stay safe everybody.

First of all, I absolutely loved to hear your thoughts on season two and agree mostly with your thoughts on hunter being the worst part of it. They should have kept his personality to what it was when he had the mask on, then he might have actually been fun. But I don't think the story would work if he was removed entirely because he's so central to the plot with Belos. Hunter is only ever good however because of the people around him. Darius is a good father figure to him in contrast with how abusive and manipulative belos was, willow and gus outshine him in every scene they're in and luz and amity have more compelling arcs even when hunter is sharing the episode with them. Secondly, I welcome you aboard the Darius simp train, that man is outstanding and charismatic and sexy and oh my God I love him so much. Ok i like hunter not obsessively I don’t get that way for any character tho i squeal over cute lumity moments. but i do like hunters character ( even tho i know he has some serious writing problems i can see the potential ), but like wtf its not cool to send mean messages to people. Like its not ok to harass people over a CARTOON character,like bro chill.
I would have no issues with Luz’s tendency to needlessly sacrifice herself if the show addressed and condemned her behavior. It’s treated way too much like a quirk of her character and not an actual serious issue. The only time she’s given any flack for this is in separate tides, a scenario far less reckless and dangerous then going to fight Phillip alone or staying in the Isles with the collector. This needed to be treated like a character flaw and it wasn’t. I really hope they address this at least in some part in season 3 with the kids having nothing better to do then play therapy while waiting for the portal to reopen.

The portal scene in King's Tide would've been better served if the sequence of events looked more like this:
1: Amity begs Luz to go with them to safety.
2: The Collector notices King is fleeing with Luz and pulls him away.
3: This is when Luz stops.
4: The portal starts collapsing.
5: The vine magic is pulled out, both to keep a hold on King and stop the portal from collapsing.
It's self-sacrifice, sure, and it's not ideal. But the stakes are far more immediate, and it makes more sense because she still wants to go through the portal before it closes. She's not an idiot, she knows Eda can take care of herself, she still wants to get to safety, she just wants King to also be there with her.
I feel like Luz's rampant need for self sacrifice stems from her former obsession with high fantasy adventure. It's no doubt she's grown a lot from the first few episodes but maybe there's still lingering quirks. Like, think about how many high fantasy YA books have a character sacrifice themself to atone or just to get their friends safe. I sometimes feel like Luz does that subconsciously because she's just absorbed so many of those stories. She's not the most egregious self sacrifice character(⭐) but it fits that she doesn't know that this is a problem that she needs to stop doing.
I'm glad that somebody else hated that Gus shared his focal episode with Lumity.
Justice for the human expert
Just a slight correction, during the bit about Escaping Expulsion Ginger says Anne from Amphibia is Taiwanese, when that couldn't be farther from the truth, she's Thai. I was surprised hearing this coz just looking at Anne, she couldn't EVER be Taiwanese to me. She just looks Thai.
Also, something really interesting is the difference in Luz's memory of her conversation with her mom in Yesterday Lie and the actual scene. You can search it up easily on TH-cam, just type something along the lines of "Camila and Luz Yesterday's Lie vs Follies at the coven day parade". But basically, in Luz's flashback, she remembers her mother's request for her to come back as final. She remembers it as an order. But in the actual scene, Camila is BEGGING Luz to come back ! She might as well be on her knees apologizing. She says "I didn't mean to push you away, I swear things will be different !" There's so much to take from this contrast, honestly, how Luz burdens herself with a choice she doesn't have to make because "mother knows best", when all Camila wants is her daughter's well being. And in turn, Camila feels she has failed Luz as a mother, because Luz might as well have ran away.

I always found him being a grimwalker hilarious because it means 100% of him is artificial: His importance to the story, his stakes, his relationships, and his very fucking being is completely artificial.
the funny part about him being a grimwalker is that we literally didn't see it being explored (at least not yet). it's always brought up as a point that makes his character interesting but it's only potential interest as of now. in the show currently, he found out he was a grimwalker, was seemingly distressed about it, and then deliberately asked luz to not bring it up. the entire reason it could be interesting is because it can be explored in an interesting way: what are the repercussions of him being a grimwalker, how does that impact him, what does he feel about it? all of these questions are currently mostly unanswered and fully unexplored. the reason people find him interesting is because they can make up answers to those questions, and they can explore these concepts on their own, not because the show is actually doing anything interesting with him. his depth is fully made up by fans.
was there an episode I missed where they actually explained what a grim-walker is? it could mean necromancer, it could mean zombie, it could mean squib. it's a seemingly meaningless "other" designed most insidiously for all the minority viewers to more easily relate to the otherwise straight white boy.

Honestly, Hunter's relationships with the main cast reminds me of a meme regarding Asta and Noelle from Black Clover. Luz in Reaching Out unfortunately still had some guilt, her actions were still motivated from guilt.
She would’ve already made coping mechanisms to deal with her dad’s death, but those mechanisms would’ve come hand in hand with her Mom. Now Luz is alone, and not just that but Camilla is alone too. They depended on each other on this day. “But this year I’m not with her and I don’t have any flowers”
looking back on her conversation during Yesterday’s lie; the entire “did you hate living with me that much”, and her mom begging her to stay.
It’s not just her father’s death. Luz feels alone, and also understand her own mother’s feelings that day of being alone. They always supported each other on that day and this time they can’t, and (to Luz) it was her who chose to leave, so it’s not just the loss of her dad, but the loneliness.
And so Luz does what she does best, “and when you told me about the problem with your Dad…”, “I just needed a distraction”. Kinda like Follies again

I believe the same thing as you guys in that, Hunter was so funny and enjoyable in Separate Tides, like, I was so ready to have a new favorite villain who would dance around, make quips, like if Spiderman were a villain to a certain extent. Then again in Hunting the Palismen when the first few minutes were Luz and Hunter having sibling energy and it was great! I really dislike how they took that away for just angst and trauma dumping cuz while I get he's been manipulated by Belos so he's got a hard time breaking away from that until Hollow Mind, it still took a funny villain and made him boring and angsty to the point where I really am just annoyed by seeing him in fanart and edits like, "Okay, hes a zombie who listens to emo bands, cool, can we talk about wholesome gays yet???"
I remember Dana (I think) releasing art of beta versions of TOH and one of them was Hunter and Luz hiding from an angry Eda, and HUNTER Looked like a feral kid ready to start fighting eda with nothing but teeth and a stick and I would've LOVED a 10 year old feral Hunter rather than the edgy one we have here
Ps. I only thing I like about Hollow Mind is the Collector. Theres nothing else fun about Hollow Mind. Collector is the greatest character theyre amazing and fun. In fact, the Collector is singlehandedly the best character imo. With the whole playful 10 year old being from the stars, a fantastic design, and them being all powerful and positive. I don't know what they'll do with the Collector, but in the few episodes they appeared, Collector singlehandedly stole the show for me.

10:20 - 11:20 Just had to say, Ginger, that was one of the most profound things I have ever heard and really left me thinking about how I handled my of baggage and as you said, it is unfair to me to feel like my pain must be showed to the world, to find validation in others that things really aren't alright rather than to find that validation within myself or those close around me. I had a whole book planned with a character going through this inane amount of hardship just so I could feel that it was okay to feel bad and that really isn't the way to do it. I'm in a better place but there was still this little part that wanted to share all the worst feelings and experiences, I already planned a re-write as the draft is filled with novice writer mistakes but now it can be filled with more substance than "please feel bad for this character", that being very much the entirety of Hunter's character at this point, "please feel bad for this boy".

I watch these shows primarily for the entertainment value rather than the lore and story crafting so as the Golden Guard the character was a lot more fun and enjoyable. Hunter constantly brings the mood down which squanders my enjoyment.

Also what pisses me off about Labrynth Runners, in the same vein as Hunter realizing that Willow was an illusion before Gus, is when Gus is having a panic attack in the climax, who is the one that comforts him? His best friend of many years who's helped him before? No, it's this guy he's met only a few times. The way Willow just looks at Hunter like, 'you got it', encouraging him to go to Gus just really salts my apples.

To toss in my two bits to the conversation on Gus, despite how season 2 of the owl house is very mid, I’ve gotta admit that Gus’ solo episode and his prior episodes really made him grow on me, not only for his fantastic growth and the common thing I share with him on a desired field/skill being undervalued, but also as I came to a realization that with his desired coven of illusions.
The explicit way how the majority of the BI (Boiling Isles) and other covens downplays how powerful it can be, it reminded me of how various art mediums from acting, art, music, poetry, dancing, etc, are treated irl in a capitalist system that devalues it so much and miss how some forms of art are so powerful and evocative can be, and yet when you’re an artist in that system after making it, that inspiration can be so easily lost with constantly churning out new work that’s new and not derivative.
48:32 To be personal on this briefly, I felt what that’s like for two years prior to and during the pandemic with trying to get work as an animator/artist, with little comeuppance which resulted in frustration, anger and depressive episodes as a result of that, and how I worried that I couldn’t do anything else because art is all I’ve ever been good at and feel passionate doing. and I cannot stress how inspiring it is to see Gus overcomes that step by step in his development since as of writing, I’m moving next week for university to pick up the first art degree I started in ‘17 and finish it to help with my job search
That’s what really made me like him so much more for his genuine development and the metaphors regarding his desired coven were relative to my own anxieties regarding my desired field of art and unsuccessfully trying to break through into a job primarily relative to it, and it’s disappointing how much his growth is overshadowed.

Nearly all the characters I have seen that are in well known media don't even get names they are there either for a joke or an moral.

Of course there are indi works from native people which is great. Such as the tv show rez dogs, and rutherford falls even stuff on TH-cam such betsy lee's no evil, who has inspiration coming from all over the America's especially Myan and Aztec but also Alaskan native and native north American culture and dress which is great but, it would be nice if we could get a chance for kids to see themselves with out having to dig only to find 5 minutes of content.

Someone clearly had ideas for the Golden Guard, potentially good ones. But it just dissolves into this gloopy mass the moment the mask comes off, we get the scene from the pilot, and the character collapses into "A bad, but sad, boy". Just... Have SOMETHING more than a bleached, half-remembered Zuko clone from 7 years ago.
Even him being a duplicate of Caleb doesn't really mean anything, because Philip just treats them all as disposable, inevitably traitorous pawns. There's no deeper bond, or hidden guilt Philip's hiding that keeps forcing him to bring Caleb back to life by proxy. If all the Golden Guards were just some powerless orphans Belos had adopted... What would change?
I'd love to see them some day.

I feel like eclipsed lake would’ve worked better if belos didn’t bench hunter like he sent hunter there with all the undertones of if you fail I’ll kill you that are in his voice. It would give hunter more of a reason to be there and would make some of hunters freaking out make more sense while also maybe giving him some of the fun dialogue and personality of his intro episode. It gives him way more of a complex character with strengths and weaknesses. Not sure if im articulating this well

I knew Huntlow would happen the moment Hunter's face was shown. He is the fan favorite angsty white boy, and what happens to all angsty white boys? They're paired up with some girl. Doesn't even matter who. And because Luz and Amity were already taken, Willow was next in line. It's never about the couple, it's always about the fans getting to see their favorite white trash experience romance. It's annoying favoritism at best and a gross self-insert situation at worst. Willow has the power to send people to the backrooms and she's still reduced to being Hunter's crush.
Since Labyrinth Runners, fans like to say that Hunter finally found his support group with Willow and Gus, which is sweet at first, but then you notice that those same fans won't include Luz, as if Hunter replaced her. Big eyebrow raiser. The one thing I liked about this episode was Gus using the fire glyph. A bit of a callback to Through the Looking Glass Ruins, but also seeing Luz's friends learn from her is very nice. Same for when Amity uses the plant glyph in Reaching Out.

Hunter stans frequently write AUs where Eda adopts him instead and Luz is completely removed from the story. So far I haven't found a single person who says their favourite character is Hunter who wasn't just the worst kind of person.

I think Hunter would've been a much better character if he wasn't connected to Belos' backstory because that gave him in some way too much importance. Let him be the sassy jerk under a mask until he finds out about his predecessors and decides to still be sassy, jerky, but with a cynic edge, chaotic neutral. Or let him be a normal soldier who tries to climb the ranks and competes with Kikimora to be Belos' new right-hand instead of making him take roles that other characters are capable of.
This idea that Hunter's connection to Belos made him too important is a falsehood. Not every villain's dragon is an important character, and for all his focus Hunter contributes nothing to the plot.

The discussion of Luz's self-sacrificing nature, and holding herself to unreasonable high standards, was one of my favorite threads throughout the video. Because while I do adore Luz as a character, Dana 100% goes too far with this aspect of her character. And it's not a good thing because it has yet to be addressed fully within the show.
That all being said, I'm hopeful for season 3 addressing this (I know you guys aren't as hopeful... But I am). And that's because Luz's actions finally had a tangible consequences that's impossible for her to ignore- her losing King to the collector (and getting left behind).
Her younger brother, a younger child, was sacrificed because she unnecessarily stayed behind to 'hold the portal together' to 'make sure everyone (but her) got through.' And because of her actions, King was forced to sacrifice himself to save Luz directly. If Luz had gone through when she had a chance, when Amity begged her, she and King probably would have both been safe.
(That's how I saw the scene).
Now Luz has to feel that pain herself. Now she has to feel what's it's like to be left behind when someone she cares about has to sacrifice themselves for her. And it's even worse, because King didn't do this because of a character flaw in himself- he did it because Luz forced them both into it with her own actions (Not maliciously or intentionally, but still).
I want, and am hopeful, we'll get a scene between Luz, Amity, and Camila where they talk about specifically what happened to King, and Amity and Camila make Luz see that the pain she's feeling from what King did- it's the pain they all feel everytime Luz sacrifices herself. And then finally, finally, it would click with her that this character trait in her is a flaw that she needs to fix. (And of course, have the reassurance that she doesn't deserve to hate herself for what happened. None of this is to bash on Luz, this is me just hoping for good character scenes.)
Ultimately, one of you said this- The Owl House has tight writing. I think it was pretty purposeful to have a scene at the end that has Luz trying to sacrifice herself again, but ends up causing someone else (King) to sacrifice themselves for her sake.
It would have been nice if this character flaw was addressed before now and worked on more, but this represents the ultimate (and purposeful) break for me. Dana, you have something good here.
Please deliver finally on this aspect (Better late than never).

As an artist I come up with new cool character designs constantly but often the story already has enough fleshed out characters that trying to develope any more would bloat it, so I let them be minor supporting characters or one-off/ "cameo" characters who don't need to be developed more than their appearence and name and maybe a very basic personality. If they rally wanted to get Hunter's design in there somewhere they could have given him a role in just a few episodes in something and saved the time for developing the other characters

I was honestly suprised skara wasn't a part of the group. It felt like they were gearing up to have her their because illusion, plant, abomination, and bard were the covens that got the most focus. Like skara could have gotten a whole episode of breaking off her friendship with Boscha and becoming a part of the group. And in a side note a much better relationship for willow, i'm still salty about the injustice done to one of the best characters.
What's even worse about hunter stealing scenes is that he is literally a block of wood. How insulting is that, imagine you finally get your own episode but then he just rolls in to literally stand there with that weird frowny face someone carved on him.
ony 37 minutes in so far and while every point brought up was very insightful i wanted to point out the bit about studio execs getting blamed for everything CZ LIKE IT'S TRUE and it's kinda funny. fandom likes to act like the execs are a scapegoat for poor writing because they just can't fathom that shows they like can just fumble and there HAS to be a malicious intent somewhere there instead of the more mundane "well... people mess up"

edit2: the discussion about belos in the "eclipse lake" section is SO good. i find it's the problem with viewing morality as like a very black and white thing (in a "a person can just be either a good person or a very obvious seething villain" way), because abhorrent people CAN be just Some Guy and most bad people are!! which is what makes them more dangerous!! because they could be ANYBODY around you and if you aren't keeping yourself in check /that could be you/!!

It crazy to see the complete change in how you guy's feel about this season compared to season 1. Now it brings to questions if season 2 was Diana's true vision would season 1 still be as good had she did it her original way.

@@LilianOrchard Yeah, wrote it half way through the thing seeing how open you were about it beeing inferior to first sezon, and how much you hate some parts of it. Honestly my view of that sezon is that it is equal or slightly better then first one, but it's probaby because I watched them one after another and it;s mostly me beeing hyped. Anyway love your work keep it going.

Season 3 has 3 44-minute specials. We already have 1 released, so hopefully in one of the other 2 Luz accomplishes her promise and we see Luz and Amity going on the most boring date ever.
My random thoughts on the season. Overall, the second half felt like that's exactly when the team realized they didn't have enough time so they had to rush it as quick as they could. Where the season ends feels like where the second half of season 3 was meant to start and the first half would be random adventures of the C.A.T.S crew.
I got most of my info about the season second hand from the fandom so I missed a few things here and there. One day I watched a video about Hallow Mind from the shit hole that is the Round Table, and it was the first time I ever saw Collector show up ever (which was something you forgot about, don't blame you.) As soon as I saw them, a pit formed in my stomach because god damnit, they were doing it again. They spent a season and a half building up the main villain as this evil threat that should be feared, then it was like "just kidding, this is the main villain." Amphibia did it, Star VS did it, Gravity Falls did it too an point. It's something that only works if the villain is introduce in the first season, or the first villain is beaten at the end of the first season.
From Hallow Mind onward, I had a massive fear that they would try to redeem Bellos by trying to justify why he killed his brother and saying he was really sorry about it. It was a secret weapon they had that they could use at anytime to justify redeeming him. Again, Amphibia did the exact same thing with a character who tried to murder a child. And there's still time, who says the goo ball can't be a good guy.
Elsewhere and Elsewhen was a stupid episode for me. As an fan of time travel, it sucks that it was done in the worst way with Grandfather Paradox stuff. There was absolutely an better way to do Bellos is backstory, it could've been as simple as have him just have a flashback about it. Just don't have Luz be THAT important to Phillip becoming Bellos. And it's made worse because the B plot was way more interesting with Eda and her dad, it could've been about that instead.
I got myself hyped for an version of King's origin that just didn't happen. I wanted King just to be an monster that isn't native to this part of the isles and his dad is just some deadbeat. I wanted that episode from Fresh Prince where Will meets his dad but animated.

First of all, I absolutely loved to hear your thoughts on season two and agree mostly with your thoughts on hunter being the worst part of it. They should have kept his personality to what it was when he had the mask on, then he might have actually been fun. But I don't think the story would work if he was removed entirely because he's so central to the plot with Belos. Hunter is only ever good however because of the people around him. Darius is a good father figure to him in contrast with how abusive and manipulative belos was, willow and gus outshine him in every scene they're in and luz and amity have more compelling arcs even when hunter is sharing the episode with them.
Secondly, I welcome you aboard the Darius simp train, that man is outstanding and charismatic and sexy and oh my God I love him so much. Also Raine Whispers, where do I even begin, great non-binary rep and a brilliant SO for Eda, they're amazing.
Also contrary to what you said, I actually like Terra Snapdragon because of how delightfully evil she comes across as. She also seems disappointed that murder is illegal in thems the breaks kids and I just found that so in character for her.

Ok i like hunter not obsessively I don’t get that way for any character tho i squeal over cute lumity moments. but i do like hunters character ( even tho i know he has some serious writing problems i can see the potential ), but like wtf its not cool to send mean messages to people. I would have no issues with Luz’s tendency to needlessly sacrifice herself if the show addressed and condemned her behavior. It’s treated way too much like a quirk of her character and not an actual serious issue. The only time she’s given any flack for this is in separate tides, a scenario far less reckless and dangerous then going to fight Phillip alone or staying in the Isles with the collector. This needed to be treated like a character flaw and it wasn’t.
I really hope they address this at least in some part in season 3 with the kids having nothing better to do then play therapy while waiting for the portal to reopen.
