    I own 5 of those X-Men Comics with the covers of the whole team attacking Magneto. The 90's were the best times for the X-Men.

    The X-Men animated series was my introduction to Marvel.
    Still the best version of the team imo

      The Canadien I agree, and people always bash the 90's and without Batman the animated series and the men show, do we even have comic book fans today??
      Xmen was GREAT up until the end of the onslaught saga..
      Yet no one ever does videos on that era!!!
      I just want 1 good "fatal attractions" video..just one..
      Love rob, hate his video on fatal attractions..
      Barely mentions the emp that killed millions and started it all..
      Doesn't mention prof x takes all the expendable xmen (+ jean grey) because it's a suicide mission.. blasphemy..
      I'm not emotionally invested at all.. :p

    • @pious83
      @pious83 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +joshua cox Elitists like to hate on anything 90's today. Pretty pathetic really as a decent chunk of 90's comics were solid and the whole _EXTREME_ nonsense wasn't as widespread as many detractors would have people today believe.

    • @joshuacox183
      @joshuacox183 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      pious83 I think really it is more that it soured at the end and was capped with the comic bust.. so people connect one with the other.
      The stuff pre onslaught was xmen at its best imho..

      Re watch that show now. I never noticed it as a kid but holy shit is cyclops the most annoying douchebag that's ever existed. He's like a child who runs off and tells the teacher anytime someone does something wrong. Gigantic douchebag.

    I love the X-Men, they were my introduction to comics in general from Vol 1 #128. "The Day Reality Went Wild!" And of course, my return to loving the X-Men was in the Silvestri Uncanny X-Men days during the whole Reaver hunt and the Siege Perilous story arc, which then got more interesting with Jim Lee doing the pencils afterwards that led into the original X-Men Blue and Gold teams.

    Rob, just one quick correction, Hope's name comes from Cable's wife from the future where Hope spent a good 5 years or so of her childhood Cable escaped with his wife and adopted daughter but his wife eventually died and the next time they found a safe place to rest when he was asked who they were he said I am Nathan and this is Hope. So it's nothing to do with her being the mutant messiah even though they do use that a lot in her stories once she returns but the name was just a name of someone who cared for hope and cable.

    • @DavDWilliams
      @DavDWilliams 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      U1TR4F0RCE ; interesting take. When I read that I assumed that the baby girl he was protecting grew up and they had a daughter, which would make her an official summers, which means that hope summers that comes back in time is actually cyclops grand daughter.

    • @U1TR4F0RCE
      @U1TR4F0RCE 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That would have been weirder than the real situation which is just he didn't give Hope a name until she was like 7 years old or so, mostly referring to Hope as her, and occasionally it, much to the chagrin of his wife, funny enough Hope's first crush was a guy from the future in a city that worshipped Stryfe.

    • @nicholaskennedy6256
      @nicholaskennedy6256 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      David Williams that would be seriously weird. She's Hope Summers because she was adopted by Nathan Summers.

    Pyro and Avalanche debuted alongside Destiny in UXM #141 (Mystique had debuted months four years earlier in Ms Marvel, and Blob is of course from Stan & Jack's days). They predate the Pryde of the X-Men cartoon by eight years.

    Rob, I truly appreciate your channel and all of the great material you put out there. One BIG pushback in regards to this video was your comment about Claremont's run. Yes, definitely, his run was very much about characters, but I thoroughly disagree with your statement about his plots not being complex or lengthy plots that run over 20 issues. Dark Phoenix (which started nearly 40 issues before with spacecraft crash), Days of Future Past (unique for its time), Sinister-Morlock Massacre-Summers-Madelyne Prior/Inferno plot, Dissolution and Rebirth (lasted from the Morlock Massacre if not before through X-Tinction Agenda), everything about Wolverine's past, and others that were the gems of comics and other writers are still feeding off of the plots/characters from his time.

    I remember Avalanche and Pyro have both appeared in the X-Men comics about a *decade* before the TAS has been made. AFAIR they both made their first appearences in the early 80's, being among the first mutants recruited by Mystique for the New Brotherhood. Rogue wasn't even part of the team back then, and hasn't even absorbed Ms. Marvels powers back then.

    Rachel Summers was part of the present timeline long before Days of Future Present, that story just had her reunite with her timelines version of Franklin Richards, among other things. Msytiques Brotherhood (including Avalanche and Pyro) were already established during the '80's and eventually were rolled into a government sanctioned team, Freedom Force(pre-Thunderbolts) by '85. Pyro was in the first three X-Men movies.

    I like to read one or two issues just before I fall asleep. If I'm working on a project like a new Spidey design suit, I'll read some Spider Man but otherwise, Comics are there to bridge the 15-30 min gaps in my day-to-day life maybe about 4 or 5 times a day.
    Comics are a bit like my version of my a break to me!

    Dear Rob, I love your videos. Thanks for sharing the world of comics with us.
    I have hear your arguments about the Marvel situation a couple times, and I just have something to point out.
    I know comics and other media are a form of escapism, but there is no such thing as an a-political comic. As much as we might try, we are subjective in everything we do, and our thoughts about our reality always transpire in our creations. Even in the golden ages you have shared with us, comics were always highly political (hell, superheroes have been punching nazis ever since).
    Perhaps the issue with marvel is that they are trying to acknowledge and play with their subjectivity in a very obvious/strait forward manner, and that creates issues. Specially because the world is not two sided (good vs evil), but instead it's just full of people with many different perspectives. When things are not as two-sided in real life, then acknowledging that political stance can bring debates. I don't think this is bad in itself. It can be good for some stories. But having a more hidden agenda its perhaps better instead of bringing everything forward as they are.
    To be fair, and give you an example, the reason why I am getting into comics (besides the MCU) is because of the diverse cast I see in Marvel right now. I like the turn on Captain America, and I love Thor!. But I don't quite enjoy America Chavez (not because of the feminist message, but some other particular political references to South America that I can't bare). But I am really happy that you are sharing this stories with us in a very open way! and giving them value for what they add.
    So I don't think this is a two-sided issue. Is not that you will either have politics in comics or don't. First, You always had and will have politics in everything. Second, there are as many ideas, positions and perspectives as people in the world. And third, there are always middle grounds to consider, ways in which comics bring particular ideas or agendas without being so strait forward.
    This is another reason why I don't like terms like SJW. And I know you have used it before and I see it in the comments a lot. So I jut want to throw this out to see your thoughts on this.
    There is no such thing as SJW. Yes, there might be people who embrace it in weird ways, but when you look at it, what people call SJW tends to be just a bunch of folks from very different backgrounds speaking up their perspective of the world. Hell, you might consider as SJW two persons with totally opposite views of the world! And this is not a "movement" of any sort, really. The term is used now a days just as a mean to disqualify any form of alternative perspective that appears. But the thing is that this is something inherit to the internet and the society we live in. It's just that people who couldn't speak before, or weren't heard, now can write something online and everyone will know about it. And for bad or good, this is here to stay.
    I don't know, I just feel that limiting our view of comics, the media, or the world to this black and white situations, were you are either with us or against us, is quite limiting. The issue is not that politics are part of comics, they have always been. It might be that they are being more explicit in a context were things are a little bit complicated. So instead of looking at it in a two sided way: Politics yes/no; or SJW vs US; I thinks it's wiser to look at the bigger picture: there are many perspectives here, many political ideas in all comics, many views within the new marvel, many things that might be too blunt, other that can be subtly. And That will probably gives another perspective of the industry.
    Dang this is too long and you probably won't read it. But thanks for the videos. =)

    I disagree with the premise that people don't like the social commentary of Marvel comics.... Stan Lee has stated the basis of Magneto and professor x was MLK and Malcolm X ..... Captain America was basically a world war 2 propaganda vehicle.... alpha flights fight with the Russian counterparts.... black panther etc.... That has been marvels main crutch over the years.... what people don't like is the topics that are being touched on.... they are not very veiled and so they feel like it's so right in your face.... and looking at that is a problem to a lot of people that don't want to see or acknowledge it.... they also in general can't be bothered by the new characters replacing the ones they love.... Dick Grayson took over for Batman in the same manor both falcon and Bucky took over for captain America.... I don't quite remember the uproar when Bucky took over.... they don't like something but these ain't it.... maybe it's a combination on things all at once.... but individually people have accepted this forever

    • @pious83
      @pious83 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      X-Men has always been a political vehicle (as Rob actually said) likewise by his very nature, so has Captain America. The problem being they tried to force this context into books and characters it doesn't mesh with, which makes it more overt than it has ever been. Too much for some.
      To be fair, the same people that say "make new characters" are the same people generally acting like petulant children whenever Marvel or DC grow a spine and try to retire one of their established heroes. You can't have both..

    • @raharmonnelson7537
      @raharmonnelson7537 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      pious83 are you saying they did too much too fast.... or that only change a handful of characters.... because if both characters remain the new one won't catch on.... the only exception to that is miles morales....

    • @pious83
      @pious83 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Raharmon Nelson Definitely too much too fast. Again I will point you to the X-Men. Even dating back to the Original Five series, they would introduce new characters (Havok, Polaris, Mimic etc) these new characters would be given initial development then by left to exist organically with the Marvel Universe.
      With each era they would introduce a handful of new characters at a time, some hits, some misses. Until you reached a point where you could be reading an entire line of X-books made up of these characters, that had been naturally brought into the spotlight. While at the same time co-existing with the established popular cast.
      Notice they missing word, the one that Marvel uses currently, outside of the X-Universe. Which has generated Marvel's current issues: forced. Forcing a Legacy replacement to Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Spider-Man, Iron Man all within a couple years, minus any long term build up, created the backlash which has led to nothing but problems now.

      I think the issue personally is that the political stuff placed in marvel were not just political for intelligent readers, but a spectacle for the average younger. CA = WW2 propaganda, but it's about a super soldier doing cool new things. Mutants = Malcolm X vs MLK, but featured beings will wildly unpredictable and amazing powers(along with puberty). Black Panther = Black Panther Party wanting their own government(or something, I don't know much about them), but generally is just the name with a super soldier in control of the world's greatest material. Just the Purifiers alone makes Mutants generally a racewar and by far was their most popular, but didn't affect actual people's perspectives on thier own lives.
      SJW could be good if they they made a cosmic being who allowed them to get super strong from their rage or lack of compramise, like with Sire Hate and them fighting others who against the Love cosmic beings. They are making it more grounded, and leaving the spectacle out of the story. The key to this is to not overtly explain what it's about. I'm sure the revelation that Xmen was about civil rights wasn't told until clearly enough time had passed and you saw the mutants as normal people. This overall, is the fault of Civil War, for making things take the turn for grounded and eventually making everything too grounded.
      But that's just me.
      What if the black outfit Dr. Strange war was vibranium, which enhances magic, thus giving reason why his SS status was a lot stronger in the earlier comics. Stuff like that.

    0:44, small correction, Rob. It didn't "offend" people. It was a literal call to violence against Jewish and Christian people via islamic scripture.... lets not sugar coat the issue.

      @iamanapejustlikeyouape2258 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      As I see it. Due to where it was put, it was kinda working against that. XD I mean, by doing that you put muslims in the spot of the normal humans. The people we hate due to being shitty toward mutants. “Muslims should not appoint the Jews and Christians as their leader.” becomes "Humans should not appoint the mutants and such as their leaders". As we see that good talent, good people, are unable to bring forward their talents for they are mutant and the humans would not be ok with the... well that tends to put a nasty taste in at least my mouth.

      It was straight up antisemitism from a bigot who happens to be a Muslim.
      He was fired, and for good reason; just as anyone of any creed would have been had he put in artwork referring to a verse that promotes anti-"insert religion here".
      Had he only put in something that was anti Christian, the media wouldn't have batted an eye; thank goodness he screwed up and put in a verse that is antisemitic, since that's what got him fired.
      The MSM doesn't care about insulting Christians, but they take anything that's antisemitic or anti-muslim very seriously.

      It seems like a fairly ok story tho. I simply do not like that they make Thor a title, as Thor is just as much the name of a character as Odin or anyone else. I do not see how Thor can stop being Thor. :/
      The idea of a nice godlike character being dragged into a game of the gods where normal people are toyed with. That seems interesting to me. :/ I wonder if there is a good place online to read comics.

      I got that beat: all religions need to disappear. They may have the seed of good in them, but they are unerringly turned toward intolerance and the flaw in all humanity: creating a sense of self-identity around some outer thing....job, money, color, class, RELIGION, gender, etc. It's an illusion, for we are none of those. Sadly, religions and the other tribal mentalities still present in our civilization are at the root of all discord and strife. Without these lies, people naturally and nobly embrace one another as friends and equals, from all corners of the earth. The truth we see on the close of this era is that Unity and Oneness will be the paradigm of the next, and rightly so, at long last.

    They make movies all the time slandering God/god. That is a good inference Rob, that they made Striker a military man because of the possible backlash. Are there any facts to support that or, is that just your opinion, which is certainly a good one. p.s, I go to sleep listening to you every almost every night, that sounds so gay I know, but I love the way you tell the stories, and you have a soothing voice, I make it about twenty minutes before I am in dreamland. Thank you for giving me another substantial interest, I have been watching for about 4 months and as a former drug abuser, being clean for a year now, you need things to fill your free time, I was just hitting the gym all the time, now I have comics, thanks to you man! One Above All Bless!

    omg Rob describes a not insignificant customer base of comics to a T. 30 something year old dads with children choosing comics as a form of escapism as opposed to books, movies, tv, computer games and graphic novels. That being said, quite a few story arcs are compelling enough to make the transition to adult entertainment.

    Pyro and Avalanche were there way back. They also got rid of the Evil and became the Brotherhood of Mutants. Calling yourself Brother hood of Evil Mutants was some golden age cheese. I'm not sure why they went back to Evil mutants. Anyway they were definitely the 90's Brotherhood and later Freedom Force (and the introduction of Val Cooper)

    I bailed on the x-men when they started with too many titles to follow back in the 90's. It really went off the rails when they started a title that told the exact same stories that were in the cartoon at the time. That was my "I'm out" moment.
