      Have you guys ever seen any UFO's out where you live? Not alot of light pollution so I imagine you have seen some strange things. I understand if you don't wanna say. I have seen some strange stuff deep in the rocky mountain plains.

      Your reaction when Lauri talked about the crossbow ricocheting to me was so awesome. Something like "don't say that, you crazy person, now I'm worrying". Best of luck on your new channel, I've enjoyed HPC and BTP, thank you for all of your experiments as well as being safe with safety shields and ear/eye protection.

      You should read Kalevala. It's a finnish national epic. The protagonist's wife, Aino, actually turns into a fish and he catches her without knowing that's her. It's readable in Project Gutenberg website for free, in english.

    If you shoot at the ice under an angle, that is not perpendicular, the arrow should ricochet. Would be good high-speed-camera footage too, I bet. Would be interesting to find out what the critical angle is that marks the transition from penetration to ricochet...

    I shot an arrow into the air,
    It fell to earth, I knew not where;
    For, so swiftly it flew, the sight
    Could not follow it in its flight.
    I breathed a song into the air,
    It fell to earth, I knew not where;
    For who has sight so keen and strong,
    That it can follow the flight of song?
    Long, long afterward, in an oak
    I found the arrow, still unbroke;
    And the song, from beginning to end,
    I found again in the heart of a friend.

      At that trajectory with approximate height of x and the force of gravity it went through. They are looking for arrow, and should be looking for small hole. I believe it went through the ice.

    • @JaredReabow
      @JaredReabow 6 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      If the arrow did not go through the ice with the full force of the bow behind it directly down, it certainly will not have gone through the ice at thay shallow angle with significantly lower kinetic energy.

    • @oliverrapp93
      @oliverrapp93 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Phillijr I disagree, the arrow will still have the same energy (if not less) as if it was shot straight down.

  • @peterclayton4385
    @peterclayton4385 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    The arrow would have stabilised in flight (due to the fletchings) and landed more horizontally at such long distance which meant it is probably on the lake laying flat hiding under a thin layer of snow. Good attempt though.

      You can't heat it up very much, otherwise the aluminum shaft will melt

    • @vx-iidu
      @vx-iidu 6 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      It won't make a difference because the impact is too fast for any significant heat transfer. Also the aluminium will conduct the heat away.

    This is a great illustration of the normal modes of oscillation for a vibrating string where only one side is secured, one case of boundary conditions in the differential equation that describes that movement. In DE class, the physical description of such a case is typically a crazy contraption of a vibrating string where one side is secured and the other is affixed to a rod by a frictionless loop. It was really cool to see this case in the physical world!

  • @GamingMill
    @GamingMill 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You should do a distance test with a huge length of lightweight thread fastened to the back end of the arrow; that way you can find it easier. If the thread is already loosely uncoiled on the floor it shouldn't have too much effect I should imagine on the flight of the arrow either.

    Not sure what the velocity of the bolt is but at 150m/s with a launch angle of 60 degrees, discounting air resistance it would have travelled 2 km... 200m/s would have been almost 3.6 km.

      I have to just do some research will the video stay monetized since it's going to be quite lot of work to build test bench for all different guns and do everything safely.

      50 cals are quite rare in Finland since you have to have usually real need for type of gun that you want to buy to get permit and there isn't that many legitimate uses for .50 cals :D But I think the .338 lapua packs also quite good punch and we have really fast hand loaded ammo for that.

    A tip here try doing it on a little longer distance, the arrow is not going max speed when fired, most time an arrow is fired it can get to a peak speed after that it loses its speed to get to a peak speed you have to hit something at an x distance for max speed ( I CAN BE WRONG ) this is just what ive heard and seen on the internet

    Try out an UV flashlight on the arrow, if it don't glows up, paint it with some uv-paint. Put the flashlight on the drone, and fly around.

    A crossbiw like that can shoot accurately out to 100 yards. You should try it with a lighted nock on the bolt, they run about $10 US. Then you can track and find the bolt. It may have hit in the trees.

    There’s a dead guy on the other side of the lake that knows where the arrow is... lol

    I wish you would have had the bench turned the opposite direction. That way if the arrow hadn't stuck in the ice, the back of the bench could have given your legs some protection. Just thinking of your safety!

    You need to get some tracking arrows with a radio beacon or similar if you want to do that sort of long shot

      Tarvu heh, yes there is. It's "pelko". I think they might have fear but the excitement wins it most of the time. 😂

    Them hitting the loan ice fishers with a arrow would be like something from Monty Python.

    The extra content; take another arrow, attach some sort of cloth-tail/serpentine to it (make sure it don't break away when firing) then shoot that arrow as equal to the first arrow as possible.
    This should make the 2'nd arrow easier to track while in flight & landed, and you should find your first arrow a bit further away and in a similar direction (account for any difference in wind direction & speed between 1'st & 2'nd arrow)

      I have to make some product development with the bolts but they leave the crossbow so fast that all things attached to them tend to stay in the crossbow and just the bolt flies out :D
