  • Based on Adam Kay’s award-winning international multi-million selling memoir of the same name, Ben Whishaw (A Very English Scandal, Skyfall, London Spy) will play the screen version of Adam in the series which has been adapted by creator Kay himself.
    This is Going to Hurt is Kay’s diaries, scribbled in secret after endless days, sleepless nights and missed weekends, tell the unvarnished truth of life as a doctor working in obstetrics and gynaecology. The series sees Adam clinging to his personal life as he is increasingly overwhelmed by stresses at work: the 97-hour weeks, the life and death decisions, and all the while knowing the hospital parking meter is earning more than him.
    This Is Going To Hurt is a show about trying to be a good doctor in a system which can sometimes feel like it’s working against you. Like the book, the series will depict life on and off the hospital ward with frank and often shocking honesty. The series rejoices in the highs, while pulling no punches in its depiction of the gut-wrenching lows, and celebrates the everyday superstars of the health service who keep our hospitals running.

    Someone in the comments is fighting so hard just to say that Kay isn't cut out to be a doctor because his behavior shows that he doesn't cope well with the environment he's in.
    Like wasn't that the whole point of the show? The person kept insisting that doctors like Kay are part of the minority and that the majority copes well enough as if that erases the fact that there are doctors out there suffering under extreme pressure.
    What that person couldn't see is the lost potential of these doctors who "are incompetent because they lack empathy for their patients". I mean Shruti alone showed great improvement in her field but still ended up dead because she couldn't take the stress anymore. Are we just gonna ignore the doctors we lost just because there are those who cope better?

    • @MyDuckSaysFucc
      @MyDuckSaysFucc 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Honestly, empathy was the problem with Kay’s situation. I haven’t watched the show yet but just finished the audiobook (read by the author). People like him who start out really caring and empathetic don’t make it as doctors because empathy is painful, and that means daily pain for a guy like him. In a labor ward, babies and moms to be die in horrible agony on a regular basis. Not only that but he would have to talk to all the grieving relatives, compounding the trauma. To survive, doctors have to be total sociopaths or somehow build an emotional wall between them and the patients. I don’t think Kay was able to fully do that. Throughout the book, by his tone, I could tell he cared a lot, especially about the babies. A lot of people think he was making fun of patients, but listening to him read the book, it was more like each horrible thing was another straw that broke the camels back, continuous unending misery that can only be talked about in a dark comedic light. His stories may sound funny to the audience, but remember he had to see these people suffer.

    An interesting insight into why the NHS has some of the worst perinatal and maternal mortality rates in the developed World. Yes, the USA is worse, there's always one, but that's a very low bar.

    • @MadenskySquare
      @MadenskySquare 2 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      Maternal mortality rates in the UK are 7 deaths per 100,000 live births. Just to pick a few other countries, that's the same as Germany, better than France or Portugal (8), New Zealand (9), Canada (10), and yes, significantly better than the US (19).
      All developed counties I think you'd agree? In fact the UK has better maternal mortality than 86% of the world.
      Is it perfect? No, but calling it 'some of the worst' is clearly not true. Sadly I suspect you have some kind of agenda here, but please don't resort to lies. Especially when they're so easy to disprove.

    This is nothing to do with the Labour wards in the NHS , most births are done by midwives , doctor are in the side , only come for one second and leave. They don't deliver babies only forceps and ventouse, most of the time they don't have idea of physiological births .
