    90’s Barbie is literally top tier. No one can amount to her, at all. I think a full-on reproduction (exact replica) of the original would have been iconic & so much better. Just my opinion.

    She's definitely cute, but yeah the original is obviously superior. She's a pretty doll and these days we should think ourselves lucky when we get removable clothes. The only thing I would change is the hair length, it's not long enough 🤭

      The 1992 Totally 💯 hair Barbie had me in a chokehold in 1992😂
      I have the 2022 line of
      Barbie; Totally Hair
      Christie is the best comparison to the Orginal.
      Especially with her hair down or in a ponytail.
      I also have Barbie and The Rockers and I have the modern 2020s interpretation side by side in my doll case.

    The new Barbies definitely aren't "fashion dolls" anymore. Most of them feel generic even with the new body shapes and heights. I get that Mattel is trying to be inclusive, but they're doing it in a way that doesn't feel genuine. I'm Asian, and I feel more of an attachment to the older Barbie than the new one that's supposed to look like me. The old one just has so much more character, plus top tier clothes and accessories to match the doll's quality.

    • @alejandromolinac
      @alejandromolinac 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Haven’t they had Asian looking dolls since the 80’s, no?

    • @anonview
      @anonview 2 ปีที่แล้ว +41

      @@alejandromolinac You missed the point by a mile. I don't care what ethnicity Mattel gives their dolls. I just want them to give the dolls substance again. Backstories, well thought out themes, accessories that can withstand wear and tear. Even if the Oriental Barbie could be considered all sorts of problematic now, it still had better quality/fitting clothing, hair rooting, and articulation than some of their more recent similar products. The point is, they can work with inclusivity *and* creativity *and* quality in mind, especially at the price points they sell their dolls. Please don't try to twist my comment into something that it's not.

      Yeah i miss the old bodies and the glam that Barbie had. I grew up in the 2000s so those are the dolls that I remember but those dolls are 10x better than what we have today. There was no need to change her body but I do see why they did that. The 90s Barbies are the most iconic. I am starting to collect Black Barbes from the 70s-2000s.

    It surprised me that you didn't mention how way less dense the hair rooting seems to be in the new Barbie. I don't know if it's because of the crimping, but the new Barbie seems to have significantly less (not only shorter) hair. That was the saddest part to me. Love your content!

      I feel like this is a problem with barbie across the board right now though! IDK if they r going for realism or if its just cuz todays hair styles are much more "easy" and smaller in general or just a being cheep thing but either way no barbie today is made with a sufficient amount of hair. Hair play for the entire barbie product line is all but gone from existence

    • @InkpadsPlaypad
      @InkpadsPlaypad 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      My theory is that Barbie likes to keep their dolls within a certain budget. And with the climate costs and materials, and the rise of shipping prices, they choose to get corners but they cut them in the wrong areas. And I've been noticing other companies starting to do that as well. Barbie has a certain set price that they don't want to see rise and because of that the quality does suffer. But they're still getting that product out there at that same price. Collectors I know would be fine with paying an extra 5 to $10 more if the quality remains. But parents / young kids that they're targeting would not

    • @Elphaboy
      @Elphaboy 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@InkpadsPlaypad the only thing that makes me kind of argue that being the “justification” for cutting corners is that MGA seems to be able to put out play line dolls that “quality-wise” run rings around Mattel rainbow high alone is just a Juggernaut in the doll market and parents don’t seem to have an issue paying upwards of between 30 and 50 for them. The Barbie rewind line is perfect example of how they could be upping their quality across the board, yes they are $40 when they are initially released but honestly do they need to be? They don’t even come with a second outfit. I fully understand wut ur getting at I think it’s Mattel being cheep and not having a stellar design team. The ppl they have designing now really really need to take a risk instead of just being cheep and safe

    • @Yukiokoba
      @Yukiokoba 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Elphaboy MGA is a privately owned company and they are highly focused on making dolls, they're really not known for much else. Mattel on the other hand has a lot of franchises and many investors to answer to. So arguably their budget and design choices are very limited. Many designers that no longer work at Mattel mention how they really have to fight to keep as much details as possible but often times they end up cutting down on quality to meet a certain price point. It's upsetting especially when the CEO recently said in an interview on a magazine that people seem to be willing to pay extra. So idk there's a lot of higher up meddling not letting designers fully explore ideas and make them more interesting. The only kind of exciting line Barbie has rn is barbie extra and Barbie looks. Which are both budget dolls but with decent quality for the price. Barbie extra is really fun and colorful and Barbie looks targets the adult collector with superior articulation and very versatile clothes that are understated yet versatile. On the higher end we have Barbie Pink collection which is the successor of the Barbie Fashion Model collection. That was an iconic line with extremely high quality and I believe the dolls at the time cost 70$. Now we have less detailed designs on the Pink collection AND higher price. So this is why MGA can give us quality with a competitive price (although they've raised their prices significantly lately) I am also thinking maybe they use cheaper labor.

    I own the original totally hair barbie from 1992, the brunette version, and love how long her hair is. I've been up and down on how I feel about the newer versions of her but I think I'll try to get all 4 of them and just enjoy them without comparing them to the original. Obviously they don't even come close to comparing to the original, but they are nice dolls overall. As a side note, the Asian version has the longest hair of the 4 of them, the blonde has the shortest.

    I'm wondering if the dress is so baggy because they are designed with the idea that she can share the outfit with the curvy Barbie's. I do get that doing that avoids complaints or risking upsetting a child, but if it were fitted like the original I think it would be much cuter. Love your videos!

Maybe even title the series Reunion Barbie with a version of Barbie included in it with maybe a picnic or barbecue play set and a cake prop that says friends reunited. I think that be a cute line maybe even a second chance for some cute characters to come back.

    I wish the Superstar headmold would come back and replace the tired Millie face... Almost every single Millie face looks the same for me, while even the playline Barbies with Superstar mold had nuances to their faces that made them look all unique. I also don't like the colour streaks of hair on the newest "Totally Hair" Barbie. The colourful streaks are everywhere these days (color reveal dolls, dreamtopia dolls, etc.) and it's just there to match the not-so-good-quality pieces of clothing... The different bangs in the repro totally hair might be because the original used kanekalon hair and doll grade kanekalon has been discontinued. Kanekalon doll hair is super super fluffy
    As for the new doll I wish her dress was more form fitting but I don’t mind it otherwise, totally hair Barbie didn’t have the most phenomenally detailed dress either, and honestly this is one of the better modernized takes on old dolls. I like the colors in her hair, longer hair would make her stand out but I’m honestly not the hugest fan of floor length doll hair since it tangles so easily, if she was her own concept and not a remake the shorter hair would honestly be perfect for me lol….

      As I recall from the dolls I had as a child it depends on the doll. I had the sparkle eyes, the teal mermaid, a bed time Barbie and baby sister Shelly. After a few years the hair of sparkle eyes Barbie (my favorite doll) became brittle and felt like plastic cotton candy, the mermaid hair always felt a little different because of the glittery hair and the streaks that would change their color. Shellys and bedtime Barbies hair still feels nice.

The original is definitely way better than this. I'm not impressed with the hair at all. It's not short enough, the color streaks aren't really exciting, and the fact that the hair came tangled is really discouraging. They really should have made her colors a little brighter and given her better accessories.

    I have the original totally hair barbie from 1992 and with all of her accessories and I did a comparison to the new totally hair barbie that you are reviewing and to me they are to totally different dolls.

    I actually love the new one, if I see her on clearance I might well get her. As for other ones I would like to see remade, I would looove for them to do Skating Star/Olympic Skater, even though they wouldn't because now they just make their figure skater dolls part of the career line and with moulded on tops :(

      Ebay has alot of them for cheap since the majority of then were kept in the box. Which decreases the value over time because they are way to many in great condition.

    Thanks for the video! I had the original Totally Hair Courtney when I was a child. I loved her. Too bad I don't have her anymore. I've started buying some new Barbie dolls for my daughter, and I regret the quality of the plastic. It seemed stronger in the 90s. I suspect they had to change to reduce the cost but also probably to comply with the toy standards of now.

    The fact the 2022 version has hair shorter than the reproduction already means she is a flop.

  • @giamarie6966
    @giamarie6966 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Her hair isn't just shorter but also quite thinner. The whole point of THB was the hair. Mattel missed the mark. They had the repo version only several years ago, if anything they should've just done and repo again to celebrate the 30 year anniversary of THB.

    They should’ve made the new 2022 one with longer hair, better hair accessories and a cooler outfit! 👏🏻
    It lacked in appearance. She wasn’t serving like original! 🤙🏼

    I hae the patterns they use on modern barbie doll dresses, I like the type of dress she's wearing, but it would just look so much more barbie if it were just plain pink. They could have done such a cute thing with giving all the dolls just one simple color. If they all were just one color and you could mix and match if you collected them all! Instead of giving them the extra strands in their hair they could have given them a simple hairband like the originals

    If the 2022 one was marketed as something entirely different than "totally hair" and not trying to live up to the original, the line would have been a decent one. But as it is using the "totally hair" branding and trying to compete with the original, it just doesn't work and makes it even more disappointing

    I got the original Totally Hair Barbie for Christmas in 1992 and I loved her so much.
    I bought the reproduction doll a few years ago from eBay, in box, and she lives on a shelf. Such nostalgia when I look at her.
    I don't understand why the new one has such short hair!

    I remember having a Barbie doll with super long pink hair and one with super long purple hair, & they were some of my favorites! Their hair length was closer to the original Totally Hair Barbie rather than the 2022 one. Just shows how quality has changed drastically.

      If these are dolls from the 90's, I think you are referring to the Hula Hair line, which was great!

  • @wesw1024
    @wesw1024 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I would love a reproduction or reference in maybe a Barbie rewind centered around the 2000's of the Jam N Glam pop star Barbies, they don't have to have the ever flex waist or twistable hair change features but just that look at least done in a high quality way with good articulation and included stands without raising the price beyond the $50 mark would be a dream. Or the even more unlikely remake of the my scene dolls would be cool but the way the non reproduction side of the monster high relaunch is going I'm not gonna hold my breath for either tbh.

    I think any older Barbie will always be top tier when it comes to the attention to detail on the accessories and the articulation. I am not sure why Mattel is not taking note about these. The cost of the dolls has gone up, so why not up the quality?

  • @petersmv1

    oh and the patterns are recycled from the colour reveal dolls fabric skirts from one of the outdoor series as one of them has the same fabric but with hearts instead of stars. so it isnt remotely linked to a nod to the original it is just repurposed fabrics as there is a heart pattern dress on one of the dolls (the pattern changes depending the hair stock ons shape

    About barbies pink pumps they actually started making all the shoes the same in the 70's because children often lost them so if you had multiple dolls with the same shoes you'd always had a match if you lost one.

    If I'm thinking abou which lines they can create again as an inspiration, I can't think of any doll line that they can revisit that is iconic as Hula Hair or even Jewel Hair Mermaid. Maybe try Rapunzel again? Idk.

    OMG! The dumb little jingle from 1992 took me right back to being 12 years old and I remember going to Target ( the same one that I now buy my OMG and Rainbow High dolls from on occasion) and buying the brunette one! I'm not sure if I still have her or not 😕 but I can still smell the Dep styling gel to this day, and I can remember styling her bangs with it. The late 80's and early 90's were SO all about hair, and hair spray and gel, and OMG, you just sparked up some MAJOR nostalgia! And you hadn't even been born yet! Yes, the original was SO much better. Better quality, details, HAIR, the original just screams early 90's

    My thoughts: the face on the new one is cute and the dress would be a favorite if it was more form fitting and not so baggy. That said, the original is by far the superior doll. I'd like a remake of Sweet Roses PJ

    The new doll is nice but no way it holds a candle to the OG I have the whole collection of the 90's and I absolutely love the line. And even the Barbie Extra dolls have longer hair. And the reproduction of the 25th anniversary is a good doll but the face paint and hair is not as good either. Great video. 👍
