I think it isn't the sideskirts that bounce the shots, it's the horizontal armor plate just above the tracks on german vehicles. Still kinda stupid that it just eats the shell instead of deflecting it...
Exactly just like when the stupid tracks eat a shell. The horizontal nature of these plates would simply deflect the shell upward or down ward and even if a square on hit occurred you'd have some penetration that would cause damage if you think about it exception with the track but tracks aren't armored plate either so who knows if they'd even be wide enough to stop a lot of rounds. Instead, even though a track isn't even armored plate, it'll totally eat a round. Just totally destroy the round instead of the round directing upward or downward into the side plate. The KV-1 has the track do it a lot, German side skirts are notorious for it too and that's what I believe causes it is the plate and not the seam since the stupid tracks do it all the time too.
You're not hitting side skirts on the German tanks, you're hitting the "sponsons" for lack of a better term. (I present the term "love handles" for future consideration) In order to facilitate larger turret rings and maybe ammunition stowage, (just guesses) German tanks almost always hang over the width of their tracks. A shell hitting the intersection between the side armor plate and the plate protecting the underside of the sponson will deflect and behave very strange compared to hitting a normal flat piece of armor. What should probably happen is a good deal of shrapnel at the very least, but, in order to reduce server load, War Thunder will only show you the pieces of shrapnel that actually hit a module. Looking at cutaways done by museums, there are often bulkheads separating the sponsons into several compartments, meaning almost all of the shrapnel would be either stopped by a bulkhead or travel roughly perpendicular across the inside of the tank. On the German tanks at this BR, save the jagdpanther and some others, the driver and radioman are a good distance from the turret crew. You, I, and many other players will often shoot between these two groups of crew when sideshooting for good one-shot potential. Because of the spacing, however, firing a solid shot AP, for example, at this spot will often result in the shell passing harmlessly through to the other side. A relatively narrow cone of shrapnel as constrained by the sponson, like described above, may not hit anything either and thus not be rendered by the hit camera. I think that's why all you get to see from the hit camera is a bland "hit" message and your shell seemingly gobbled up by the sideskirt. Just a theory, but I think we see this problem more often on German tanks because our eyes are drawn to the lines of the sideskirt, or maybe the skirt obscures. This is unlike a Sherman, where the sponson doesn't have a skirt and the edge is easily recognizable as a poor place to shoot. I think it's similar to how you can't seem to stop shooting t-34 drivers hatches, even though you know it's jank.

I am WELL aware this is the case, but on ANY other tank it doesn’t do this. The reason is the side skirts quadruple the effect. I literally showed it to you in the video where the sideskirts overlap. I don’t know if anyone actually watched that section at all at this point. Every tank that has the sponsons has a thicker armour value there BUT none of them have the same absolute nonsense figure like German tanks with overlapping sideskirts do. I perhaps didn’t explain it enough, I thought visually it was more obvious to me but I guess some people just aren’t as observant as others.
In WT the shell doesn't pen because it hits the horizontal plate which connects the lower side and upper side armour, not the side skirts or sponsons, those shots can be replicated on the t-34 and most other tanks just as well.
@@OddBawZ With most Shermans I was able to get an armor value of 380mm with SV MK.1 aiming at the same spot. (in the same plane as the underside sponson plate) With T-34s it was in the 400 range. Both the panther and t-34 had a larger "spot" where the armor value jumped up. My guess is the substantially thicker lower sponson plate on the panther and t-34 makes the wonky physics zone bigger? Spaced armor is supposed to be fairly detrimental to the performance of sub-caliber rounds, particularly short ones. However, I don't know how well Gaijin is modeling that, because the action of interference for spaced armor is induced yaw, or even tumbling if the spaced plate is substantial enough and spaced enough. I wonder if it is treating each skirt frill as a discrete piece of armor, instead of as a laminate piece (like a jumbo or kv1b) as it should because the space between the plates is smaller than the length of the projectile. (this relationship is key when talking about apfsds so I assume it has some relevance with slightly squatter apds)

I think the worst things that have ever faced us due to the volumetric shell update are the tiger's driver hatch, the tiger's machine gun port, and the t34's driver hatch. Basically anything with an optic lens screws with it. I would have about 20% more kills if it weren't for that tiger driver hatch which I've hit so many times. Nice video though! I love this tank and how much of an underdog it is compared to the german mediums.
This has been a long time thing, even before volumetric was implemented. Tracks have been stopping shells in this game since the beginning, yes they may be a foot or 2 in width, but its not fixed armor. Hitting a track would deflect it up or down, but would NOT just stop a round like it does. The same thing is happening to the top armor over the tracks that stuff may be 13mm thick, but horizontally its 304 mm. This is how we can tell that the tank rounds aren't volumetric, they just haven't implemented a system for having a round deflect off of something smaller than its diameter. We still have pixel shells.

I think the issue with the Panthers and tigers is that there is a horizontal plate above the tracks that is causing the issue. The shell is hitting the side skirts, then the hull side, then the plate above the tracks. And because the plate is horizontal, it's being considered as a very thick plate, even though it's only like 20mm thick it spans the distance from the outer upper half of the tank to the inner lower half, and it's a big distance.

To answer the jumbo question.. that is solid cast steel welded to the jumbo front, it would acording to physics give just a little grip to the shell if hit, to put some downward force on the impact as well as the forward force, negating some of the angle of the jumbos front plate.
Gotta love how the Panthers sides could be penned by AT rifles in RL, yet in war thunder they can stop modern APFSDS rounds. Truly an enlightened game.
It's a blunt-nosed shell, which means it should be decent with angles, but gaijin just cranked up the angle multiplier for giggles, I guess. At least after the pen changes it's not uite as bullshit as it used to be
@@Eonymia I've never found a good document that explains in detail how blunt nosed soviet AP shells performed in real life. I don't have a problem with the performance against angles that the APHEBC shells have, they aren't OP. The 7,5 Cm KwK 42 is only slightly worse against angles than the 85mm ZiS-S-53, you practically don't see a difference in a real game. The 7.5 Cm KwK 42 is better in every single way except for the post penetration damage.

I had a game in the D-5T a lot like your Maginot game in the intro just last night. Racked up probably 8 kills, solo defended the town and then made a push to clear and cap B, absolute rampage. Team still lost of course because for some reason nobody knows where to shoot German tanks at 5.3-6.7 but it was fun all the same.

This is actually kinda realistic, because you're hitting the entire width of the tracks or the plate above the tracks. Of course in real life the shell would be far more likely to glance up or down instead of trying to penetrate all the way through that relatively thin plate.
He is hitting the whole width, yes. But it’s not realistic at all, a volumetric shell should behave exactly how you’ve described - go up or down and pen there. And this happens A LOT, Panther’s skirt is just easiest to describe. Bmps have this issue, almost all Leopard-turreted tanks and Lavs, etc.
The game calculates the horizontal pieces of side skirt as being straight armor. Eg. If you have a horizontal piece of skirt that's 30cm horizontally by 1cm vertically (so in reality a thin weak piece of metal). A shot that hits it has to penetrate through the 30cm of horizontal material in the games logic. So it is in effect 30cm of armor in a horizontal line for the round to go through. It's been this way for years.
It's like opening daily rewards with OddBawz intro, never know what to expect after "In this video", except unlike daily rewards with its "+5% to all teammates" bullshit, OddBawz's intros always bring joy.
It's always funny to me how everyone has 3 or 4 spots they ALWAYS scuff a shot on no matter what. For me it's the vacuum cleaner driver ports on Tigers, T34 driver hatches, KV1 rollers and turret sides of Leo2's. I always made sure to aim below known armor overlaps for side shots (fighting jumbos leaves these kinds of trauma habits) but it creates new variables. Please don't mistake my comment for something mean or critical. It's simply an acknowledgement of our personal biases and interesting they can be.
The bigger question is why are people shooting that spot constantly? It's like the same with people complaining about the T-34 drivers hatch or whatever else weird shell interaction spots on other vehicles.
The whole side of a tank isn't exactly a "spot" though is it. Because of volumetric if any part of the shell makes contact with this overlap - which happens often - no pen. This makes flanking two of the most common tanks in the game unreliable, which is dumb. It just needs fixing.

Nobody's aiming for the overlap, but even at 100-200 metres it's really easy for some of the shell to hit it. Odd isn't exactly known for being a bad shot but he's hitting it on the regular because it's difficult to miss. I hope they fix it, they fixed the more widespread issues with overlaps already.
So the topic today is, that tigers and panthers have a 5 cm (+/- 2") wide patch on the side where the sideskirts are bugged. Presented by a tank which easily bounces 76mm APDS frontally with its 45 mm armor or a Tiger I shot straight to the side turret :D I see, Gaijin stuff.
I'm not sure what's more funny, the fact that Odd was complaining about broken sideskirts on German tanks or the fact that he was bouncing 88s and HEATFS during that Kursk battle. T-34 driver's hatch vs. KV-1 fuel tank vs. German sideskirts vs. M50 Ontos front plate I'd love to see that battle.

I think the worst things that have ever faced us due to the volumetric shell update are the tiger's driver hatch, the tiger's machine gun port, and the t34's driver hatch. Basically anything with an optic lens screws with it. I would have about 20% more kills if it weren't for that tiger driver hatch which I've hit so many times. Nice video though! I love this tank and how much of an underdog it is compared to the german mediums.

This has been a long time thing, even before volumetric was implemented. Tracks have been stopping shells in this game since the beginning, yes they may be a foot or 2 in width, but its not fixed armor. Hitting a track would deflect it up or down, but would NOT just stop a round like it does. The same thing is happening to the top armor over the tracks that stuff may be 13mm thick, but horizontally its 304 mm. This is how we can tell that the tank rounds aren't volumetric, they just haven't implemented a system for having a round deflect off of something smaller than its diameter. We still have pixel shells.
00:50 I don't think the non-pens are because of volumetric but because you're hitting the length of a plate, I'm pretty sure i remember this happening even before volumetric.
Yes, but the sideskirt is quadrupling the effect. I literally showed it on the protection analysis. That was the whole point. Every tank has this just not all of the tanks has the same type of side skirt as German Armour.

No idea how, but a Chinese 1943 T-34's front armor just swallowed my shell from the KV-2. Literally no idea how that happened, as it pens anywhere if you look on the protection analysis.
I assume it was HE, yes? HE just can be very strange sometimes....I was in a pz4H and survived a shot being slapped into my side...all it did was blow off my track and some of the side skirts
@@socialjihad5724 nah, I use APCBC in the KV-2. I have shit luck with HE shells, and the amount of explosive in the APCBC Kv2 shells is ridiculous. 😂

Nazi players are in majority the worst skilled in the game. Overpowered tanks just let them ignore twice as much mistakes as any other nation. Thus they tend not to learn at all.

I think the issue with the Panthers and tigers is that there is a horizontal plate above the tracks that is causing the issue. The shell is hitting the side skirts, then the hull side, then the plate above the tracks. And because the plate is horizontal, it's being considered as a very thick plate, even though it's only like 20mm thick it spans the distance from the outer upper half of the tank to the inner lower half, and it's a big distance.
1 Year Later, Gaijin has fixed none of these things.

To answer the jumbo question.. that is solid cast steel welded to the jumbo front, it would acording to physics give just a little grip to the shell if hit, to put some downward force on the impact as well as the forward force, negating some of the angle of the jumbos front plate.
Those tasty sponson undersides combined with sideskirts makes the server not want to calculate a thing..

The 85mm gun using the APHEBC shell has even better performance against angles than the long 75mm mounted on the Panther, i tested it with a friend.
It's a blunt-nosed shell, which means it should be decent with angles, but gaijin just cranked up the angle multiplier for giggles, I guess. At least after the pen changes it's not uite as bullshit as it used to be

I don't have a problem with the performance against angles that the APHEBC shells have, they aren't OP.
The 7,5 Cm KwK 42 is only slightly worse against angles than the 85mm ZiS-S-53, you practically don't see a difference in a real game. The 7.5 Cm KwK 42 is better in every single way except for the post penetration damage.

I had a game in the D-5T a lot like your Maginot game in the intro just last night. Racked up probably 8 kills, solo defended the town and then made a push to clear and cap B, absolute rampage. Team still lost of course because for some reason nobody knows where to shoot German tanks at 5.3-6.7 but it was fun all the same.

This is actually kinda realistic, because you're hitting the entire width of the tracks or the plate above the tracks. Of course in real life the shell would be far more likely to glance up or down instead of trying to penetrate all the way through that relatively thin plate.
He is hitting the whole width, yes. But it’s not realistic at all, a volumetric shell should behave exactly how you’ve described - go up or down and pen there. And this happens A LOT, Panther’s skirt is just easiest to describe. Bmps have this issue, almost all Leopard-turreted tanks and Lavs, etc.
The game calculates the horizontal pieces of side skirt as being straight armor.
Eg. If you have a horizontal piece of skirt that's 30cm horizontally by 1cm vertically (so in reality a thin weak piece of metal). A shot that hits it has to penetrate through the 30cm of horizontal material in the games logic. So it is in effect 30cm of armor in a horizontal line for the round to go through.
It's been this way for years.

It's like opening daily rewards with OddBawz intro, never know what to expect after "In this video", except unlike daily rewards with its "+5% to all teammates" bullshit, OddBawz's intros always bring joy.
It's always funny to me how everyone has 3 or 4 spots they ALWAYS scuff a shot on no matter what. For me it's the vacuum cleaner driver ports on Tigers, T34 driver hatches, KV1 rollers and turret sides of Leo2's. I always made sure to aim below known armor overlaps for side shots (fighting jumbos leaves these kinds of trauma habits) but it creates new variables.
Please don't mistake my comment for something mean or critical. It's simply an acknowledgement of our personal biases and interesting they can be.

Ive been using HE derp rounds and overpressure them. Seems to work pretty good. Just snag a derpy boy and aim center mass... or just near them lol

The bigger question is why are people shooting that spot constantly? It's like the same with people complaining about the T-34 drivers hatch or whatever else weird shell interaction spots on other vehicles.
The whole side of a tank isn't exactly a "spot" though is it. Because of volumetric if any part of the shell makes contact with this overlap - which happens often - no pen. This makes flanking two of the most common tanks in the game unreliable, which is dumb. It just needs fixing.
@@adamkingston4143 The whole side of the tank isn't just a line. There's a lot of stuff above and below that no shoot zone. And German turrets aren't known to be tiny either.
@@ach3909 The hull side shot should be the most reliable way to one tap these tanks, the turret shot will rarely do it. Nobody's aiming for the overlap, but even at 100-200 metres it's really easy for some of the shell to hit it. Odd isn't exactly known for being a bad shot but he's hitting it on the regular because it's difficult to miss. I hope they fix it, they fixed the more widespread issues with overlaps already.

So the topic today is, that tigers and panthers have a 5 cm (+/- 2") wide patch on the side where the sideskirts are bugged. Presented by a tank which easily bounces 76mm APDS frontally with its 45 mm armor or a Tiger I shot straight to the side turret :D
