The Honda XRV750 Africa Twin lives after 10 years in captivity

  • I was suprised it started. But started very easy. It turned out one of the fuses was corroded and the fuel pump would not pump fuel into the carb. I prepared the bike for hibernation, but now it needs a few more things before it gets on the road including a left side brake caliper rebuild.

This motorcycle is beautiful! The XR750 is the best version of the AT I feel.

Lock the good piston with a woodwork clamp (or anything that will stop it from moving, maybe a piece of wood), put a thin plank where the brake pads go to catch the other piston and use an air compressor on the hose hole. Don't skip the plank or you'll have a piston-shaped projectile. When the piston hits the wood, release and blow out the other one. At this point, you should be able to take them out by hand. Having the brakes in this shape, just buy a rebuild kit and replace all the rubbers in both calipers. Don't forget to clear the seal grooves of the cristallized brake fluid.

Cover the brake piston and then add air at the nipple. Might have enough to push them out. A grease gun would also work.

Take your caliper to a brake shop. They’ll use an air compressor to blow out the piston. Take all of them right away (including the back) and do all the brakes at once ‘cause they aren’t going to get any better!

Forgot to say that if youd have filled the tank right up it would start without the pump anyway.
The pump isnt a pressure pump its a lift pump as the lower part of the tank is below the carbs.
Gravity works til about 1/2 way down the tank.

So is the fuel tap 😊..below the carbs that is. The fuel flows DOWN through the filter in to the pump and then UP to the carbs.

@@johnmagee9687 Exactly that. If you change to a Facet pump you loose that syphon flow through possibility.

The addition of a diode between the fuel pump supply wires ( correct way around of course) stops the pump pints burning.
No need to change the pump. The honda one will last forever if you add the diode.
The wires getting hot is probably bad connections.
Sort all this trivial sh1t and youll have a great bike 😊

Hey man what year is the Africa Twin ?
Is this your only largish ADV bike ?
I just - like 5 days ago - entered the ADV Universe, by acquiring an uber clean 2008 V-Strom 650, garage kept & 13k miles.
This is a vastly different beast vs my Burgman 400, in a good way.
So now I'm onto the slow roll of upgrading the V-Strom...
Cheers - David from East Texas

I love the africa twin but you are better off witht he vstrom. I had a vstrom 2006 650 and it was one of the best adv bikes ever. Check some of the older videos. I think higly of it, and would get one any day of the week. The vstrom 650 is one of the most underrated adv bikes.

Very cool Motard - your opinion is informed & I respect as you've had one firsthand.
Did you do the Air Filter R & R ?
      That's a big job.
I'm Pyching myself up for it lol.
I'm adding luggage it needs storage...

    • @motardsquid

What is the air filter R & R? Yeah hard storage is great. It's a good way of locking your stuff for a bit and leavintg the bike un attended. Peace of mind. But nothing beats the look these days of soft luggage. Soft luggage is having a revival due to the high cost of fancy adv luggage

      Cool cool.
On your DL650 V-Strom, did you do the Air Filter replacement ?
It's a big job, lots to remove.
Spark plugs best done at the same time.
My rear top case comes in today for my Strom.
Been wearing a backpack - that gets old !

@@psalm2forliberty577 yeah i changed the air filter and cleaned it often. I didnt think it was that difficult. I think i must have done a how to somewhere on the channel. Wearing a backpack gets rough in long miles, strap that thing to the back and go
