I think the VAR statement is spot on. The main problem with it is the time it takes and the lack of transparency. I also agree that it has become something the the officials fall back and use as a scapegoat. I agree it should be the faster version for offside.
IMO it would be a mistake if VAR is scrapped before 'auto' offsides come but EPL clubs voting on fundamental changes then flip flopping their position when perceived levelling of playing field proves to be misnomer; what a surprise. PGMOL should train 'digital' referees. I'm sure there is many potential refs who couldn't cut it at top level because of physical attributes. Possibly opportunity to get ex-players involved.
Honestly I think VAR should stay but just used less VAR should be used only to correct an obvious mistake and not how it is currently For example, lets say a player is clearly offside but the linesman missed it then it should be used. If you have to draw lines then the on-field decision stands Or a dangerous challenge happens that is 100% a red but the ref gave a yellow
Scrapping VAR isn't the answer. Remember all the dives given as pens and blatant offsides/onsides, I can't go back to that crap. I agree that it sucks the life out of celebrations so what needs to change is the offside rule and the procedures. The rule should be made to work better with VAR, ie. base offside on foot position alone. That way there's no mulling over which part of the body is furthest ahead. Also, change the procedure so that lines are only drawn in very tight calls, so many VAR offside calls are clearly off/onside but they're pissing about zooming in and out and drawing lines, in part probably because they're working out whether a defender's arse cheek is further back than his knee. A vast majority of decisions can be confirmed in 5 seconds even without AI or semi-auto system. Also, for an offside have the screen in the ground turn red so fans know immediately and we're not waiting further for a ref to hear what is being said to him, that causes a delay also. People watching on TV know before those in the ground because of this.
