The Cuyahoga River in Cleveland was such an environmental disaster that in the 1960’s it actually caught fire a couple of times. It is widely credited with starting the environmental protection movement in America. Apologies if you knew that already.

The song is from 1986 though. Lifes Rich Pageant is an awesome album. I wish they included more of this in their sets. Their '80s output is so inspired.
Been watching REM since I saw them at UK (Ky) ballroom in 1982 - - might be my favorite REM song.

The part that goes into the middle late is the best part of the song. I saw REM on their last tour in St. Louis it was a 3000 seat theater, and it wasn’t a sold out show

REM is underrated bécasse everyobe serves the songs... so there is almost no solos, etc... so not many people will learn an instrument "to play Rem".
