  • Train Sim World 2 finally has some steam engines, in the flavor of the 8F and the Stanier Jubilee thanks to the Train Sim World 2: Spirit of Steam: Liverpool Lime Street - Crewe Route Add-On. Do they suck? No! They're freaking awesome, at least so far. The feel, sounds, and operation seems pretty great so far at this quick first look. Color me surprised and happy thus far, we'll have to keep messing with these. Let me know what you all think :)

Great Video! Funnily enough, the 8F was recorded off 48305, which is based at the Railway I volunteer on, the Great Central - it’s the only double track heritage mainline in Europe. We also have another 8F, 48624, but that’s undergoing it’s 10 year overhaul atm. Having driven and fired 48305, I must say the sounds are spot on and the way it reacts and feels is a pretty good representation!

I must say that the chuffing and the steam sounds are on point, I only wish the whistles got more love and attention and variety, but Dovetail is always known for not always making the whistles echo a bit. Nevertheless, though for being the very first pair of steam locomotives, they did a nice job with the modeling and the piston work and all that, they even have the smoke and steam billowing out of tunnels and bridges which lots of train sims often overlook.

So the one thing that I thought was wrong in operation on here - I thought it was bad form to operate with a wide regulator and very narrow cut off because the gear would rattle. Below 30% should both not come back?

@@10astudios66 Ah man really? Lucky you. I wish I could go. The last time I saw a steam locomotive was when I traveled from California to New York along the way we stopped at a place called Abilene Kansas and saw the ASTF 3451 and just before that while traveling I saw a glimpse of the Cumbres and Toltec Narrow Gauge railroad and that was it. I really wish I could see more steam trains in my life. My mother took me on a trip to the Arcade and Attica railway over in New York to hopefully ride behind their steam locomotive, but of course, it was down for repairs at the time and routine maintenance inspections. Just my luck that I hardly run into any steam when I try all that I can to do so; they just restored the R&N 2102 and that locomotive looks and sounds beautiful. So my next best option is restoring to train sims. I guess you could say that's why I give Train sim world 2 such tough love when it comes to the overall quality of their delivery on my favorite kind of locomotive because that's basically all I have besides watching someone else lucky enough to catch one of those Iron Horses on video. 😞

One thing about how much track there is in the yards, this route is set in 1958, so before the "Beeching Axe" of the early 60s, which cut a lot of Britain's rail network as a cost saving measure. Countless branch lines and large yards were torn up and the yards that were left shrunk throughout the 60s-80s as efficiency in the railroad and competition from trucking grew.

UK semaphore signals were originally up for danger, down for clear. But during a blizzard one year a signal at danger was forced down by the weight of snow and ice built up on the signal arm. This ended up causing a major accident, so it was reversed for safety going forward.

on these class of locomotives, its the radius rod that moves, not the 'banana'. the rod doesn't move that much. in this addon, that is all simulated correctly. and yes, i would LOVE to see more of this on your channel.
cylinder cocks in britain act like that. ps: ill be editing this as the video plays.
the reason the 8f's chuffing sounds a bit weird above 20mph is because the railway where they recorded the sounds at had a 20 mile speed limit, so they had to make it up themselves.
i would tell you more but theres 13 mins of video left an i dread how muchi would have to write. one last thing, the whistles are beautiful. but please tell me if you liked it.

I did like it! I would be happy to play this some more on the channel. The radius rod in walschaerts doesn't move much, but it does move, though not in center which was what threw me off in the moment. I realized later they got it good, which is awesome.
And interesting - I knew they shot forwards, but they're always running except when a valve event happens? Ours alternate between power stroke sides. I'd be curious to get a better explanation. And, that makes sense... high speed recording and making it make sense without manipulating the recording is a royal pain. Believe me, I've messed with it... haha

11:01 Sand Patch was released with the game's launch, and hasn't been updated too much since, not to metion it was a rehash of the original version in the first TSW. This, however, feels like they put their heart and soul(well, at least a little bit) into the product, mainly because this is steam's first appearance in the game series, and they wanted to make it good.

  • @ajaxengineco
    @ajaxengineco 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Don't you dare insult British signals when yours involve counting diagonal dots with arbitrary codes that change depending on where you are 😛
And once again you're driving Midland engines! Although this time you don't have a choice lol. The chuffs seem to cut out really harshly - and I'm not really a fan of the particle effects either. You can turn the sight glasses to see them better I believe.
There isn't as much activity as there would be in real life - the limited variety of locos is the cause of this. You'd have allll kinds of tank and smaller tender engines running around, on local passenger and shunting jobs. Yeah, there's a lot of yard in that area, Edge Hill and Speke Jct. Loco Depots make up a lot of it, being right in the industrial north you need the shunting space.
The reason you take so long to stop on the vacuum is because half the wagons don't even have automatic brakes - at the top of a grade you might set some handbrakes manually but otherwise they will just roll around like Robbo at a Talyllyn Railway barbeque.
Oh yeah our engineers do change their overalls between 'lighting up' and leaving the shed, at least in preservation. In Victorian days, Engine-men and Fire-men would wear _white_ fustian trousers, as it was a hard wearing fabric and easy to clean. Different Companies had different uniforms but looking at old photos (I can send in several) you can spot the white trousers easily.
And stop complaining about the whistles, they're a warning device, they don't need to sound good - I like the single-note ones, any-way. We Brits invented them, the story being that a cart of eggs was run down on a crossing at Bagworth. Not necessarily true but oft-repeated. The earliest ones were more like trumpets, and created so grand and impressive a noise as to draw people towards the train rather than away!

The tie thing is very real - by the 60s it was kind of acceptable to forgo it if you were a driver on a small country branch, but on the mainline, a tie was required. Most of the time it didn't need to be mandated, as it was a personal pride thing too - one sees people working in factories in the UK wearing ties in the 20s and 30s.

My only major complaint is that I wish the whistles had some variety like between the Jubilee and the 8F's. Maybe have the Jubilees with the lower pitch hooter whistles and the 8F's the higher pitch since they mainly handle the freight services. All I'm saying is that there is quite a bit of whistle variety for these British class LMS locomotives and while the whistle is not terrible, they could have done without the constant shrieking of both locomotives, whistle squeaks do not persist all the time in real life on steam locomotives, only when water and soot and other impurities are caught within the pipe when the whistle hasn't been blown in a while so they definitely recorded some stock whistle noise or one of those whistles that you see in videos where it is not connected to a locomotive but rather a steam piping system and they blow it to get the noise recorded and that's it. Apologies for ranting and rambling about this as I know this is a nitpick, but I think Dovetail Games and train horns and whistles just aren't their specialty at least for Train sim world in my opinion. The locomotives do look great though.

Dang it, I might finally have to get TSW2 to give this a try… next time it goes on sale maybe I’ll have a look. High speed mainline steam is always interesting. Uk signals are always fun, usually the braking distances are super tight, so you make the entire run on the edge of your seat. That freight train at the beginning probably didn’t have any train brakes, which is why you slid right through the station. I can’t imagine how bad those things must shake at speed, modern diesels still give you a pounding above 45 or so. There’s a great documentary, I think it’s called “Driving and Firing” or something, in it this old driver goes into detail about all sorts of neat British railway stuff. If i can find it, I’ll put the title in here.

All the sounds and particle effects are linked to physics. So the chuffs sound when they should and the steam puffs appear when they should. You can switch to manual firing and then you can control when the fireman adds coal, as well as having control over the dampers and blower.
In this mode, the fireman will only add coal if you open the fire door. He will stop when you close it.

    @Shipwright1918 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Hi Hyce, not trying to nitpick or anything, but just thought I'd mention a couple tips on using the vacuum brake.
When you make an application, you need to put the valve back over into the running position, as if you leave the valve in apply the vacuum will keep draining until it hits zero, which is the brakes hard on in emergency.
The trick to keeping a specific level on the vacuum gauge is to walk the valve back and forth and take "puffs" on the line, as with the ejector on the vacuum will start to rise again. If it's going up too quickly, you can turn the ejector down a little.
Vacuum brakes are fairly touchy, so it's best to apply the brakes slowly an inch or two at a time (nice thing is you can ease off if you've took too much off).
Here's a little chart to give equivalents to air brake settings.
    21 in. =Release
    17 in.=Trim Application
15 in. = Normal Service Application
    10 in. = Full Service
    5 in. = Suppression
0 in. =Big Hole 'Em!/ Emergency (The Brits call this "coshing it"]
Another thing to bear in mind that goods trains were often unfitted, or partly fitted with power brakes, so you need to start getting on the vacuum early (different classes of trains often were limited to speeds lower than track speed, depending on how many wagons had power brakes to ensure they could stop in time for signals).
Just to make things difficult, the GWR/British Rail's Western Region locos go up to 25 inches of mercury instead of 21. So that meant the train crew had to go along the train pulling the cords to the vacuum cylinders to bleed them off and re-establish the maximum, otherwise the loco taking over for the western engine wouldn't be able to fully release the brakes.

In Europe overall there were stricter uniform codes than in the US. Here in Sweden you'd have a black cap with a winged wheel, the national cockade and gold bands to signify your rank on the state railroad (you'd have 3 bands as an engineer), and you'd wear a thin black longcoat with gold buttons. The coat was simply a cover for your normal clothes, usually trousers with white shirt and bowtie. Gloves were not worn, not even by firemen.
Private companies would have their own cap insignias and an enamel button in place of the cockade, but the styling was usually the same. From what I've heard, uniforms were supplied by the company and was company property, unlike in the States where the employee had to supply their own workwear.
Britain I asume was much the same for its companies and nationalized network, the fact the driver is missing his greasetop cap with the British Railways badge makes me sad. :c
EDIT: These two videos show the operation of British steam well, explained by the very experienced driver Clive Groome.

Even that little bit of steam/smoke coming out of the stack is correct. When the throttle was properly set you wouldn't see much coming out if the stack. If you see a crap ton of smoke that means you're wasting a bunch of coal and energy. Little and often as UK firemen say.

idk if this is just a British thing or not, but I've heard that a lot of crews back in the day if they were in steam and stopped at a signal or siding would cook on the footplate. They'd use their slack pipe (hose running off the injectors) to wash off the shovel and use the heat of the firebox to cook bacon, eggs and other food. The funny thing is that the railways absolutely hated this, and went as far as to drill holes in the shovels so they couldn't be used as pans. So if you ever see pictures of railway shovels with lots of holes in them, that's why.

In fact, on the line from Harcourt Street Station in Dublin to Bray, County Wicklow there was a fishmonger who would head into Dublin once a week but couldn't afford the price of the ticket. In the morning when we light the fire for the day the first thing we do when all the checks are done and the fire is lit is cleaning the engine. The paintwork, the braces and so on.
