- I have been playing the organ for about 1 year and the piano for 4 years. Organ is an awesome instrument (some even call it the KING of instruments) and getting to play on these amazing historical pipe organs in San Diego was an amazing experience!
The piece I am playing is Prelude in C Major for Organ (BWV 545) by Johann Sebastian Bach.
The sound you hear is from each unique pipe organ below that I was able to play:
00:00 - All Souls' Episcopal Church (San Diego, California)
00:24 - St. Paul's Episcopal Cathedral (San Diego, California)
00:40 - St. James by-the-Sea Episcopal Church (La Jolla, California)
01:00 - La Jolla Presbyterian Church (La Jolla, California)
01:41 - Spreckels Organ in Balboa Park (San Diego, California)
I want to thank the following organists for making all of this possible!
Spencer Velky @hvuvtjs
Raul Ramirez @RaulPrietoRamirez
Martin Green
Jenny Yun
Ruben Valenzuela @bachcollegiumsd
Leslie Wolf Robb
Christopher Cook

I have the privilege of teaching this young man each week. The kid’s going places! What a cool trip!
@ryandye7797: He needs to be recorded onto 💿 CD or vinyl disc.
This is such an awesome video concept! Flawless editing and fantastic playing. I can only imagine how much you practice. I am scared of how good you will become.
Thanks!
Once again it sounds fantastic!!! Wherever you play at the sounds are equal and robust with lots of power!! Earthquake shaking power indeed!!! loved it very much
Thank you so much George! Some of these instruments had so much bass it literally shook the earth. It was so much fun playing them!
Very incredible playing. I started playing the piano at nine. Then I fell in love with the organ when I was 10, I'm 17 now I will never quit! I love touring organs it is so exciting. I've played many wonderful instruments in Columbus, Ohio. I'm sure you want to play the organs of Europe as much as I do. Once you get into not just baroque, but French Romantic music, you'll be having a blast. The organ is just the best instrument. Something I want you to consider doing is the Oberlin Summer Organ Academy. It is held at Oberlin Conservatory of Music in Ohio every summer typically in July. This will be my second year in a row attending. It's for organists 13-25 years old I'm pretty sure. You'll never find another way to meet as many other incredible organists your age all in one place.
Thank you Ethaan! You are right. I keep dreaming of doing a Europe organ tour! Oberlin Summer Organ Academy sounds awesome, but it would just cost too much. I will keep it in mind for the future though. Thank you for the recommendation!
If you do ever come to visit the state of Minnesota, make sure to visit Wooddale Church in Eden Prairie! It has the largest tracker (mechanical) pipe organ in the United States! 5 Manuals 74 stops and 114 ranks. Visser-Rowland Opus 90. Quite a bit of information but most people who attend our church know quite a bit about this organ. It’s quite the sound!
Thanks! That sounds awesome! If I ever make it to Minnesota, I will definitely try to make that happen!
Alrighty! The staff and organists are all really nice, so I’m almost positive they’d let you play it. Just in case you would need the address when or if you do go, it’s 6630 Shady Oak Rd. Eden Prairie, MN.
@MSPspotter6 Thanks!
Well done young lad well done
Thank you!
As a resident of San Diego County, I think that I will take several trips around to these wonderful churches, to hear their magnificent organs. Thank you, Doctor George Whitehead
Thank you Dr. Whitehead! You have some amazing pipe organs in your area. The one at St. James by-the-Sea was just recently installed and has a booming sound! The Fritts Organ at All Souls' is small but is beautiful to look at and listen to!
Nice work Charlie! Keep it up! Hope to see you at the BYU workshop again this summer!
Thanks Jeremy!
Hi Charlie. I’ve been following you & tracking your progress for a while now. Keep it up!
Thank you Mark! I will!
This video is brilliant! .....and your playing is artistically, historically and emotionally excellent. BRAVO!!!
Thank you so much Leo! It was such a fun trip!
This video is fantastic! I would have thought the temperament of the Fritts would be significantly different than the other organs, but everything blended quite nicely. It was a pleasure to meet you, Charlie, and I hope you come back someday to do a recital.
Thank you Spencer for making this possible! The Fritts Organ at All Souls' is such a beautiful organ! I would love to come back and do a recital some day! Thank you!
awesome pipe organ!
Sorry, the organ in the Amphitheater at the Chautauqua Institution is larger, and also open to the air.
Both organs are covered and protected from the elements most of the time.
Thanks for sharing Edward! I just watched some videos about the Chautauqua Institution’s Massey Organ in its Amphitheater. It is a beautiful organ. And now I understand why when introducing the Spreckels Organ as the Largest Outdoor Pipe Organ, the Spreckels Organ Society specifies the definition of “outdoor” as being “when it rains, the audience gets wet.”
@@CharlieOrgan I hadn't thought of that; you're right, of course! But actually, I saw a few nasty thunderstorms in my summers there, and sitting near the outside edge of the seating area could get one quite wet. I remember one storm when torrents of water were coming down the steep aisles toward the lowest seats, and the orchestra has to stop playing 'til the storm passed!
Fine playing on that lovely Fritts-Richards organ, BTW!
Thanks! The Fritts-Richards is beautiful and fun to play, but somewhat limiting in the repertoire you can play on it. The tracker feel was great though!
Bravo!
Thanks Max!
Very good organist there! So, an outdoor pipe organ? Sounds good, but very tight sound due to zero reverberation like you get in a church or cathedral.
Thank you Curt! Agreed, the Spreckels Organ definitely has a dryer sound because of being outdoors. You could especially tell the difference when the audio switched over from the beautiful La Jolla Presbyterian Blackinton Organ before it in the video. That being said, the Spreckels Organ was built back in 1914 and has so much history and such an amazing setting being in the middle of Balboa Park and awesome deep bass pipes that shake the ground in the park. It was so much fun!
Clickbait. This is not the world's biggest organ.
Hi Aderbal. My title specifies that this (the Speckles Organ) is the world's largest OUTDOOR organ. I guess I should add that to the thumbnail. Thanks for the feedback! I hope you enjoyed seeing the amazing organs I got to play in San Diego.
Hi Aderbal. I fixed the thumbnail. Thanks!
I didn't think you would be so humble as to actually bother making changes... I expected a stuck-up pedant... You have astounded me. That reinforces what a college professor (who is probably the most obnoxious person living on the face of the earth - nobody likes him) told me: without generosity there is no art.
Keep up.
That said, I really enjoyed your playing and it seems like you have a promising future...
@@aderbalsoares1988 Thanks!
Sorry, that's NOT the biggest Church Organ
There are 2 Organs that are within walking distance of each other that have 5 rows of keys and the pipes are way bigger too. The older one has around 11,000 pipes! They're both in downtown Salt Lake City
Both belong to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints
The older one is well over 100 years old
They still work great
Maybe if you ask, they might let you try thr 2 Organs out.
Thanks! I was expecting someone to point that out because in order to make the text in my thumbnail bigger, I left out the word OUTDOOR. In my title I clarify that this is the world’s largest OUTDOOR pipe organ, which it is. If you check out my other video, you will see that I already had the honor of performing on the Tabernacle & Assembly Hall Organs in Salt Lake City, and this summer I will be playing on the Salt Lake LDS Conference Center organ ;) th-cam.com/video/BLm7YnhjGcs/w-d-xo.htmlsi=XZcKbwwVJBWuEcbN
