The singer from Five Finger Death Punch wears a set of Military dog tags that was given to him on one of there USO tours.
The soldier who wore them before was in an ambush in I think Iraq, and afterwards, they ended up finding his MP3 player and it had Five Finger Death Punch on it.
The singer never takes these off when they are on tour.
This band is amazing.

As someone who went to their recent concert I can back this up, I spotted these dog tags, he also sang this song at the concert, he even got a little teared up

I was a homeless vet.
Only recently housed.
Every time I see this it kills me and brings the tears for me.
5 years in the Navy.
1983 to 1988, technically "peacetime."
And yet, I was an East coast vet, Carleston SC, and we transited the Panama Canal, and patrolled the waters off the Pacific coast of El Salvador in Central America during that conflict for 6 weeks.
We had a bird on board, which went out, loaded with ammo, and came back empty, so he or they were definitely engaging someone.
But our government never declared it a war, rather it remained a conflict, so no benefits came our way for that conflict unless it gets officially declared a war.
34 years ago, dood, so been a minute.
Oh. My ship was the Spruance class destroyer USS DEYO (DD-989) from 1983 to 1986.
(Pronounced DAY-oh and that song was our pulling away song, played at top volume.
Away from the pier getting underway {haze gray and underway}, or from underway replenishments.)
From 1986 to 1988, my ship was the USS AYLWIN (FF1081), a Knox class Fast Frigate.
Older than Deyo and more of a tin can.
Deyo had twin screws and could max out about 32 knots.
Aylwin (pronounced ALL win) was a single screw and was much less fast. 25 knots maybe.
And a noisy noisy boat at speed.
Deyo was at least quiet.
Deyo was one of the first ships to have Tomahawk missile box launchers dropped on the forecastle deck, right on either side of our ASROC missile launcher.
4 Tomahawk missiles in each deck mounted launcher.
Capable of supporting nukes, but no one could say if or when we had any on board.
Deyo went out without me, after I changed ships (so I could be there when my son was born) and at one point launched a Tomahawk.
It buckled the deck.
Just the one Tomahawk.
That much thrust leaving the launcher.
While we were in the yards in Portland Maine for a year and a half for that particular refit, no one thought that the deck underneath the launchers might need structural reinforcements.
While we were still in drydock.
So, they went back into the yards again and, either fixed the deck and went back out to sea on the Med cruise, or they pulled both the Tomahawk launchers AND the ASROC missile launcher and installed vertical launchers below deck instead.
That could launch 61 Tomahawks instead.
Oh...and technically...with the Tomahawk addition, we became a guided missile destroyer.
Because Tomahawks are guided missiles.
Not sure if the hull number ever reflected the change to DDG-989 but it should have.
The Arleigh Burke class guided missile destroyers replaced both the entire fleet of Spruance class destroyers AND heavy guided missile cruisers.
Arleigh Burkes are destroyers that have heavy cruiser armament AND Tomahawk VLS guided missile technology.
Both boats had Phalanx CIWS radar controlled Gatling guns that could fire 3,000 rounds per second.
Deyo had two.
I think Aylwin had one. (Only one ship class did not carry them actually.)
Arleigh Burkes have three.
Good for shooting down enemy aircraft and missiles before they can hit your ship.
Gunfire was so fast you'd here a Bbrrrrp noise, really quickly, and somewhere a missile just vanished into thin air.
Or small, missile-carrying planes.
Anyway.
I got out in 1988 and, 8 years later in Keene, NH, my wife divorced me and got full primary physical custody of our son.
I had secondary and very limited visitation.
4 hours one weekend day of his choice every other week or so.
I had anger management issues back in the day.
Drove her to divorce me.
I would have divorced me, if I'm being honest.
But it was still devastating for me.
Have not seen my son since 2004.
All the military's fault?
Well it aggravated the issues already present.
Did not get my Clinical Depression diagnosed and addressed, and treatment regimen started, until 1999...11 years after my service concluded.
Treating my ADD as well.
Anger Management issues are pretty much nonexistent now.
So this video hits home for me.
Hard.
Everytime.
And even when you're officially out of the military, once you join the family, you're never totally out.
Sailor for life.
I volunteered, signed the dotted line, and I would still die for any and all of you, so you could live.
Take a bullet or whatever.
It was the job.
Never stops being the job.
Or my life.

Sir -- from one Navy vet to another: Your story hit me hard. Straight in the feels...and as I've said elsewhere, if I could give anything outside of what I truly need to live on, I would give it and not think twice. Brothers in arms like you is why I honor any vet I come across -- because it is well-deserved, and it seems like people never do enough for those who would give their lives for the liberties and freedoms everyone enjoys.

At the end, the guy that helped the veteran up, was Jacoby from his unit when he was shot in the chest. His words were, "It's Jacoby. You saved my life, BROTHER." Once military, always military. And always FAMILY!!!!

One of the biggest thing about being Active Duty is the amount of time spent away from family. I know a few homeless vets and myself being active duty, it gave me a bigger understanding of how much it hurts. Family is one of the biggest supporters of active and retired
First time my dad watched this, he cried...HE NEVER CRIES, that made my head spin, for context my dad was in the Army, but he was in the army during peacetime, so I understand why he cried

My dad is a 12 year army vet. I'm a 16 year Navy vet. I watched him with his brothers from his time in Korea and I was in aww every time. I am always teary eyed when I hear this song. I got to meet the lead singer and I gave him one of my fathers dog tags I got when he passed. He sang this song live and I cried as I sang along to it fully hearted. I will never forget being able to give this incredible man a hug and saying thank you for bringing me and my father a little closer. Thank you FFDP for honoring my brothers and sisters and the ones who came before us

I'm a Navy veteran, my brother and uncle are Marines, and my grandfather is Army.
All I can say is, if your husband ever needs you because he needs you, don't turn and walk away -- because he is only looking for someone to carry him the way he has carried others. I say this because it is a sad state of affairs when vets carry the country by wearing the uniform, yet when they come home? Nobody is willing to carry them because of something that happened that is directly related to their service.

Not even taking into account issues like the emotional and physical scars soldiers carry home with them from combat...
Most servicemembers enlist (or receive their commission) right out of school. High school, college, whichever. They go straight from living with mom and dad, or maybe in a school dormitory, to military life.
If you get sick, or get hurt, you go to sick call. They see you, they treat you, they give you medications if necessary, you go home. No forms, no bills, it's just taken care of.
If you're single, you live in a barracks room. No rent, no water bill, no electric bill, basic furniture is provided to you. If something breaks, you report it and it gets fixed. If you're married, they give you a house to live in; same deal. If no barracks or housing are available, you get extra pay to cover the average cost of living to rent in that area.
You're provided 3 full meals a deal, 7 days a week, for free. You can choose to buy food elsewhere, but that's up to you. If a dining hall isn't available to you, you get extra pay to cover the cost of food each month.
Depending on your service, you either choose or are assigned a job when you join up. Experience is not necessary and training is included, during which you receive full pay for your rank. If any additional skills are required to perform your duties, you receive training for those as well. No cost to you.
You're issued uniforms to cover day-to-day duties, formal occasions, and physical training. You're told which to wear, when. You receive additional pay periodically to cover their upkeep and replacement.
The military provides all the gear you need for your job, up to and including multi-million dollar equipment. You sign for it. If you lose or break one of those items, unless it was the result of something ridiculously inept which you did, your only punishment will be a firm talking to.
If you get married, or have children, you get additional pay each month to help cover the costs of your dependents. As well as full medical, dental, and housing benefits for them, at no cost to you.
You are surrounded, day and night, by people who have taken the same oath as you have, gone through the same things that you have, and even if you don't get along with some them in day-to-day life, people who would quite literally die for you. It's a support network which simply doesn't exist, and couldn't exist, in the civilian sector.
When those soldiers, and airmen, and sailors, and Marines, then decide to separate from the armed forces they often experience a culture shock they quite simply aren't prepared for. These are people who have never had to write a resume, nor worry about things like rent or utilities. Who have never had the threat of being fired or laid off from a job, nor had to deal with medical bills (even with civilian insurance). They've lived their entire lives thus far knowing that if they ran out of money a week before payday, the mess hall was still dishing out free food and one of their buddies would be able to cover the drinks that weekend. They've been trained to make split-second decisions which could mean life or death, but nobody has ever taught them how to actually live in the regular world.
Throw in the immense personal pride and self-sufficiency they were taught to exude in the armed forces, and it's no wonder at all that so many end up divorced, or on the streets, or dead by their own hands. Six hours of "separation training" doesn't exactly cover it all.

i love our military and feel proud to have these brave military service men and woman protecting us but i feel ashamed for our country when we just cast aside these people when they complete their service, and that we also treat them horribly because they suffer from PTSD we have failed them when they have sacrificed so much for us and we havent even done anything to help integrate them back into civilian life
You make such excellent points. Yes war veterans return as broken people, outside they may radiate pride for they served their nation , but more than half of them suffer some form of trauma.

I can understand it can be rough, I had a great grandpa who was a spy and bomber in WW 2 and a grandpa who was in the Vietnam war to be a doctor and he got lucky the vehicle he was originally supposed to be in got hit with something can't remember what it was and was blow to hell and he felt bad and felt like he got lucky because they had to hold him back for a few minutes because of a medical thing he had. I give respect to all people in military because you risk your lives and you guys leave behind family and you font know if you will see them again so we can be safe.

When I finally get my own vehicle and the money I'm going to go see him. If possible stay the night. He was my idol and a huge role model.

We need more people to hear this and get fucking pissed off! It is a straight up atrocity, what is going on! I'm a vet, and I wish I could give something -- anything -- to help. My own brother, before he got married, used to suffer bad PTSD -- bad enough that he would shout orders in his sleep. And that's just the tip of the iceberg.
And...if we can't straighten the damn VA up, what sense does it make to try the socialized health care crap?? Sorry about mentioning it, but I feel one is tied to the other -- and if we can't take care of those who literally risk life and limb, then what does that say about our priorities as a nation? Makes me feel like a fucking hypocrite, because I'm barely surviving as it is, and can't do anything to help those who need it. It's downright fucking frustrating....
@@isaiahwelch8066 I feel what you feel. I tried to join but I was diagnosed with a chronic mental illness and that disqualified me. I was so sad and bitter for so long. I wanted to fight to protect my people and because my damn genetics I couldn't. Eventually I came to understand that I would have been a liability in the field and that they were better off without me. It still makes me sad that I couldn't join. But I do all I can to help the veterans around me, whether it is a small act of kindness or a monetary donation. I'm so sickened by the fact that they are treated like they are disposable, because they are worth soo much more. I just hope one day we can change the laws and give them what they deserve to be happy and healthy

regardless if its the U.S or Denmark, you sir did your part in protecting your country and our world. and as for not serving, advance arthritis in left knee, neck, right elbow and the grand part its in my L1 through L4 at 22 years old i move like i'm 80. the pain is some days unbearable (hence 4f). as well as i always thought that i'd be content going out for something then my life now being unable to do anything, i'd rather be in a father or mothers place so they can get to see their family then my meaningless life. until such a time is needed and i hope it never comes to it, i'll be stuck working in a damn kitchen

My little brother went to Iraq 10 years ago, he went over a kid, came back a completely different person. He struggled for 7 years to get help through the VA and all they told him was "things like this happen to soldiers". My brother thankfully met his wife, after coming back and they now have a beautiful little boy. He turned out ok, it's just terrible that most vets don't get so lucky. 5FDP is amazing for showcasing the facts of vets in this country. Love your reaction to this video.

My boss has PTSD and has served 2 tours in Afghanistan and 1 tour in Iraq. Just going places with him I can see how much it has affected him and that has not halted but in a sense halted his emotions and ethics in being at peace. Loud noises sets him off. Something as little as a door closing to hard. Thankyou for listening to this and sharing it to the ones that need to know the sacrifices and hardships even after you arent serving.

We citizens may never even come close to knowing how you feel but just know there is always someone that will appreciate what you go through for our freedom, life is a roller coaster of emotions and moral ambiguity but its always a good thing to stand up for what you believe in, and I can say that I am proud to be an American and I'm very appreciative to our U.S. military, thank you and God bless America

Whenever I see the part at the end of the veteran saying “you saved my life brother” to the man sitting on the streets...it brings me to tears! I have friends who have risked their lives in the military for our country and I’m so grateful for their sacrifice!
As an army vet myself the “gone away” cover and music video by five finger death punch really sums up a lot that military deal with that most civilians will never understand.

I was homeless and moving constantly for years, but I was lucky to have my family and best friend also a former military to help me. Constantly fighting the past is exhausting but as long as there are people that can snap you out of it and willing to help makes life much more bearable. I'm glad you reacted to this song the way the band intended it.

My nephew came back from the war with EXTREME PTSD. This song always makes me cry because I think of him. Luckily he has family who understands and is there for him. A lot aren’t so lucky.

What I've always loved bout this song, is the sense of familial love that all vets feel for each other-captured in this song so well that even people who've never served feel it too. We feel so alone after everything is said and done, sometimes it's it's hard to remember that people love and want to help us. Why weren't you there for us? We went so that you would be safe, we wanted to save you.

First off, great vid man... but secondly, my dad served 6 tours combined in Iraq and Afghanistan for the Marine Corps, he was awarded a bronze service star, and a Purple Heart. He was wounded in action, having been shot 3 times. Not only that, but he *watched* two of his best friends die... Due to this he has severe PTSD, and he suffers from alcoholism because of it. I’ve seen what that can do to a family, and it pisses me off when I see people mistreating service members, because they deserve nothing but our love and support. Anyways during one of his tours in Afghanistan, he saw a 5FDP show when they played at his base.

I missed 5FDP in Afghanistan by a handful of hours. They were in Bagram AFB (if I remember right. It could have been Jalalabad which was considerably closer to where I was posted) in 200...8? 2009? My flight got delayed because of an insurgent attack on a nearby FOB. *edit. I was heading home on mid-tour leave. I was really bummed that I missed them. (No casualties, I also feel I should report. Except the poor SOBs that thought it was a good idea to attack our boys. ;P)

Ptsd is based on trauma. It isnt about "ppl with hurt feelings" its about being traumatized aand ptsd doeant pick or choose what is traumatic and what isn't. I have cptsd caused by long term emotional abuse but got nothing from the physical abuse. The majority of ptsd people are just regular people - usually women. Be happy you dont have it and hope you never get it. Its horrific and people like you continue to spread misinformation that actually hurts ppl with ptsd from getting help. If you dont respect all ptsd suffers you can't respect military personnel who have it - you can't pick and choose who you think should be traimatised enough smh.

Funny story. I was throwing a party and my friend hailey left her friend des at my place while she went to get other people. Des and i were listening to music and i showed her this, she actually cryed. Im not sure but i think this song got me laid later that night. Ps im a vet so i love ffdp. They do good for vets and military.

I’m an IOF OEF Veteran with PTSD. When I returned from Baghdad and Falluja in 2004 after 15 months in country, I lost everything I had. My house, family, band, dropped outta college... lost several jobs and ended up living with a friend on a cot with not much of anything else. I turned to drinking and one night stands as a solution to mask the pain. Nothin helped. Finally after nearly 10 years of dealing with my demons and almost taking my own life, I called for help. I checked myself into the VA PTSD clinic and was supposed to be gone 5 weeks, ended up staying there for the CPT(Cognitive Processing therapy) and was there for 4 months. They make you look at your War traumas in a different light and made me see the big picture. My survivors guilt went down quit a bit and I am happy to say that I lead a semi normal life now. If your a veteran with ptsd, please realize you aren’t alone. You don’t need to suck it up and drive on anymore.. there are people, other veterans, who understand and can help. I’m sick of my brothers and sisters making it back and still dying from the war by their own hands. Please reach out. Help is only a phone call away! 🇺🇸

Freddy apex same to you. He's so underrated it not often I come across someone who also knows who he is (only 2 my entire life), let alone they find me. I don't know how, but I keep coming across underrated artists and loving them more often then most people would their entire life, and I'm only in High School. First Dio, then Deep Purple, and now Dream Theater.
Not a lot of kids around my age appreciate older music, let alone the underrated guys. Most kids like whats coming out in the moment (Katy Parry, Ed Sharen, ect.) with the acception of the classics they play on the radio, like Queen and stuff.
I'm not trying to brag and say "hey, I'm cultured" or something, I'm just saying that I'm surprised at myself on how many times this has happened before, and how unfortunate it is that most kids don't appreciate the older stuff anymore..

8 Years in the Navy, deployed Westpac and Iraq. Just getting on my feet, 3 years in the making I'm off the streets of Cali now and with family. Not blood family, but a different kind, people irreplaceable to me. I've got a job now, not a good one, but it's enough. I've got an apartment now, not a big one, but it's enough. I've got food now, not steak and lobster, but it's more than I had. I'm thankful everyday for the people and organizations that reached out to me when I'd given up. They prevented me from being another statistic, and this song really touched on so much that I can't even describe to this day. Amazing song, and amazing reaction. Thanks so much for bringing this into the light for those who may not have been aware. Health is wealth, be blessed
I was there and it's a real struggle. This is one of my favorite songs, because it encompasses a lot of daily feelings.
This song is so powerful that when I 1st heard it and didn't know it was about the Soldiers in the military it already made me cry buy now that I found out it was for and about the soldiers it just breaks my heart that so many of our military Veterans r out on the streets with so many problems and only a few get to be able to get back on their own 2 feet with other ppls help. It upsets me that all of the veterans r being discarded so casually and that no one cares what's happening to them, they did risk their lives for us the ppl of the nation and as I've already said it breaks my heart.

Love the song, love the band. As a veteran and as someone who now works at a VA hospital I can tell you the biggest problem with helping a lot of these men and women is they don't want the help. They are so traumatized that they choose to live on the street and not deal with the problems. We are just now seeing a large percentage of Vietnam era vets who are finally dealing with their issues. They are getting older and retiring and they don't have their jobs to escape to anymore. That what they did too. They would blow off family events and talking to their families and just escape to work with others who were going through the same thing. No one was dealing with the issues though. Obviously the VA does have problems but at least where I work there are very dedicated people doing their very best to help those who need it.
My husband is a vet, with PTSD and a TBI. We have spent many an hour, sitting in the VA waiting rooms. I was shocked by the amount of Vietnam, Korean, and WWII vets, sitting in the mental health clinic. As you said though, for many of them, they came back, and just worked, always keeping themselves busy. Once life slowed down, and they had time on their hands, I think much of this came flooding back for them. My heart truly breaks, as so many of them are going through this alone. Especially the older vets. Many have lost so much of their families, and friends. I just want to hug them all. The best I can do, is sit and talk with them, while I am there, and thank them for their service.
There is no transition for us. It's wide open to gone. It's not about wanting help it's trust. Families learning to live together again. Function again. In 19 yrs I was gone 14. The hills and valleys are deep and hard for others to understand. These are even more extreme when you are a figher. I was an EOD. 3 of us came home. Many of us are gone so much our spouses can't cope with reintegration as well as other issues. It's a lot. Then you through injuries etc it is overwhelming. And for soldiers it's hard to trust. The military just threw you away and you get thrown into a world with zero transition time.

This song hits me in the heart. I have lived with Combat PTSD in an debilitating state for some years and unless you live with it, you don't get the hallucinations, the extreme paranoia, the delusions, the constant fear of feeling on the edge when you're in public, the guilt, the anguish, the conflict, how it physically effects your nerves and can't hold your bowls in when you want to take your wife on a date, or how it's causing my feet to rot off because I don't want to sleep and have another night terror, so I stand all day and night until I just pass out wherever I am standing...yeah that's just the summary of it, and I don't want anyone's sympathy because I made the choice to do what I did, but my friends who died, their wives and children deserve everything and more because they'll never have the chance to attain what they've lost. I do want the people of America and other countries to understand the gravity of what PTSD is, and it's not some fake disorder.
I am lucky to have a mostly supporting family, an extremely supporting wife and understanding children, but many of my brothers in arms don't have that person to keep them in check, to keep them from drinking or snorting their life away to deal with the pain, to keep them from going postal on their crooked ass boss, keep them from sticking that barrel to roof of their mouth and pull the trigger, or to keep them from calling the police and claiming a man was at their house trying to kill them only for them to run out the door as soon as the police get there so the police will kill them. Many vets wanna be left alone, and that's ok, but don't box them into a room without empathy. You never know what type of monster may step back out.
I got to meet these men backstage at a concert. It was my off day while I was in the Navy. I was still in my uniform. Ivan looked at my dog tags that I wear and legit looked like he was gonna cry. I did end up crying because the tags where my dad's... My dad's favorite band was fine finger death punch and I remember the day he passed we listened to them all day. My tags are a part of me. It keeps my dad with me no matter where I am, what I'm doing or who I'm with.
That line of "You saved my life brother" hits a little close to home. A couple years back I found out one of my brothers from service didn't have a place to go and had been homeless for 4 years.. I drove around New York looking for him for 15 hours. When I finally found him he didn't recognize me at first which I'm not surprised.I had a scar down my right eye and was pregnant with my son. I sat down on the street with him and he saw my tags... He bursted out crying saying "Thank you for not giving up on me."
I'm lucky to be in a position that I could get him a house and help him back on his feet.
2 years later he has a wife and is expecting their first child. He's my godson and I'm lucky to still have a connection to my brother in arms
Love this song! Chokes me up a bit every time I hear it and brings back memories of my nearly 20 years in the Army. Thinking about all the Soldiers I have known that have committed suicide or aren’t doing very good right now. I have had to battle my demons as well and had to push through and try to make it through day in and day out.
