Why I’m returning my Ferrofish B4000+

  • I got this an a cheap option to play ORGAN BASS. The issue is that the 16” draw bar (1st one) repeats one of the lower registers in its map-out over the midi controllers. The “doubled” octave makes it a nuisance to try and play left hand bass with this thing!

    The repeated octave is how a real B3, C3,& A100 work. It's called "octave fold". Hammond designed this feature into the organ to avoid the sound becoming "muddy".

      Weird that the OP doesn't know this.

    I think it might be accurately modeling a real Hammond. I think that trying to play the lowest octave with the lowest drawbar out on a real Hammond is asking the organ to play a tone lower than its lowest tonewheel. I believe a real Hammond substitutes with the output of the lowest octave of that note available. This explanation might suffer from an incomplete understanding on my part, though. The word foldback comes to mind, but I'm not sure at all about that.

      Interesting! I have no idea, but I have an actually Hammond organ in my house and the notes do not repeat when using the 1st draw bar. Not saying that your are wrong or right, but I found this inconvenient and other organ organ modules don’t have the same problem…. I ended up using the Yamaha reface YC for bass

      @@soilsminor4715 Sorry about getting my stories mixed up apparently. That's very cool about the reface YC, though. They sound great.

      @@soilsminor4715 It's possible you have one of the transistorized Hammonds.

    Perhaps you should read the manual. You need to set up the "bass" lower" and "upper" sections with the correct MIDI channels and note range.

      Interesting!! I ended up returning this and using the Yamaha reface YC which doesn’t have this issue/setup for bass. And I used it as a module w midi out to my keyboard

    Maybe a newer controller,that one you have is looking kinda dirty and missing knobs there.🗽📼

      The controller either works or it doesn't. The esthetics wont affect HOW it works. This issue comes form the Ferrofish.

    This is how my Hammond B3 works. The notes you're searching for are reserved for the foot pedals. It's a quirk with the old tech available at the time. It might be annoying in our digital age, but it's authentic. Out of curiosity what model organ do you have?

    • @soilsminor4715

      Actually I have an Hammond C2 in my living room. Are you saying that IF a play a chromatic scale on the B3 organ with only the first draw bar out that I will get a repeated octave? .... I don't believe you will have a repeated octave on anyone of the keyboard manuals nor do you have it on the bass pedal. But I may be completely wrong.

      Interesting. I never knew about that, I should read up on it. I don’t get the repeated octave on my actual C2 organ so I was surprised & annoyed. In the end I ended up using the Yamaha Reface yC for bass

    Just got my hands on HX3.5, can’t wait to see what it will do with my viscount and 3300, paired with a 12 inch powered sub. If you can get your hands on one I’d advise you snatch it up.👏🏽

    Thanks for this video! How would you compare the Reface YC I see sitting there to the Ferrofish for an organ sound generator (with a midi board) for live use?

      @rudolphorgans Thanks but . . . how come?

    • @soilsminor4715
      @soilsminor4715  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think the Reface YC is WAYYYY better than the Ferrofish. The ventalator / Leslie replication sounds much better!! I have a Hammond here at home and I can say the draw bars react and are balanced exactly the same. It’s also easier to use! (No screen only faders)
      - The cons are there is only one organ deck (my right hand and bass hand have to share the same draw bar settings), you can’t save presets and the mini keys are inconvenient making it bigger that it needs to be. (I play it through a controller) . The reface wins for its sound. In a live setting, you can push it a lot farther in than F.Fish the mix before it’s exposed as an organ replicate.

      @soilsminor4715  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @rudolphorgans I was only comparing the Ferrofish to the Yamaha. I owned both and returned the Ferrofish. If you are saying the FerroFish sounds better then that’s your opinion. It’s fine that we disagree.

      @@soilsminor4715 Thanks so much I appreciate that! I'd be using a controller for the Reface anyways so the small keys aren't an issue; shame you can't split it as you say; could get by with the Reface keys as a lower manual for bass if you could get 2 drawbar settings but that's ok.
      Thanks again!

      @@islandtony5009 yah. It’s take consideration. When I Use it for chords I’m playing in a band w a bass players…. But For my band that has no bass player, I use the reface for bass with only the bottom two draw bars out. 👍. And my motif for chords. I’ve been lucky the Venues I’ve performed at have offered me Nords so I use that if I need organ right hand chords which works well. But eventually I will have to come up with a solution for those rare times where I play both bass and chords and there is no Nord provided for me at the venue. I’ll have to spend money on something more expensive, but doing well at the moment
