    The clutch is just fine. The Hedgehog sonic blue focus you featured in this video has over 300k on the original stock clutch. The IMRC unit however is a common part to fail.

    I have a 2004 Focus SVT with 178,000 miles and this little thing still gets up and scoots and is a lot of fun to drive. Everytime I take it through a canyon it puts a smile on my face and yes, it pisses me off to know end that we didn't get the focus ST and RS that they were selling in the UK.

    I have an 02 SVT Focus. I bought it as a salvage for $1800.00 with 33,000 miles. Someone had had slid over something and ripped some holes in to the floor and tore tha gas and brake lines out of it. The $1800 included the brake and gas lines installed. I drove in onto the trailer. That was 10 years ago, it has 185,000 miles on it now. You're supposed to change the timing belt at 90,000 miles. Mine broke at 120,000 miles, and bent every valve. I bought the parts and did all the work myself. Other than that I've just did the routine stuff (oil, brakes, tires, serpintine, alternator, batteries), just replaced the original clutch at 184,000 miles just to be safe. This is the best little car ever. I've never dogged it. Put in a new radio w/backup camera. Now it's a modern car. Lol. This thing will last forever with the proper maintenance.

    Great lack of research. In my experience with the three SVT focuses Iv'e owned, two of which I still own. Never had a single issue with fuel injectors, head gasket or clutch. I did have the replace the OEM clutch on one of them after it finally started slipping at 250k miles. 250k miles for a clutch is not weak. So when you say that they have issues with injectors, head gaskets and clutches, I'm not sure what exactly you're talking about. However, you did get the thermostat housing right. But you also failed to mention that the one thing that kills an SVT focus 90% of the time is the timing belt because they're an interference engine and the belts break a lot. So nice try, maybe do a tiny bit of actual research before you start spewing crap you don't know anything about.

  • @Therealqtip
    @Therealqtip 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Actually the worst part about the Focus SVT is that OEM SVT parts are best in class usually. Which means if you're into modding this won't be a super fun car to work on; you'll most likely be replacing OEM with OEM. You can turbo charge these without building the engines per forums (never done personally) but that's an extreme mod. Suspension can be modded but since these cars are old you are going to have a hell of a time getting most bolts out. You will not want to lower this further than factory or you will bend the living hell out of o2 sensors as well as your catalyst. As stated the the thermostat housings are weak (leaking VC gasket will drip hot oil and eventually warp TH causing a leak). You can get upgraded thermostat housings that are aluminum but I don't know how readily available they are anymore; I believe sites sell a SVT Contour housing that's a little beefier. Parts are a little harder to find since ZX3/5 parts aren't always interchangeable - CV axles, suspension, brake parts, etc are going to be SVT Specific and a lot of sites do not understand this. Some users have a hard time finding CV axles that fit the SVT.
    It's not really a fast car on the line but where is fails in speed will make up in suspension as stated in the video. Handles incredibly well from factory.
    I've never had clutch, injector or HG issues. In fact these Zetec engines are crowning achievement of Ford bulletproof engines. They are not known for HG issues; this is not the 2016 Focus RS...
    The issues I do have with the car are poor maintenance from Previous Owners; expect your Focus SVT to have minimum 7 owners. I have been the 8th owner on both FSVTs I've owned. They are relatively easy to work on but they are built by Ford so expect some special tools every now and then. Most times you can do without but they do make jobs easier - this can probably be said about most manufacturers but I know Ford is notorious for their special tools.
    Now that I'm this far into writing this; I remembered another "fault" of the car. The Getrag 285 6MT is only used in this car and a version of this trans is in the Mini Cooper. They are not serviceable. I do not know of any shops that will service the Getrag 285 either. If your synchro fails you have to replace the trans and that could potentially kill the car as this could be a rare transmission now. I believe people have serviced their Getrags but these are skilled individuals; I do not believe this transmission is easy to work with. These transmissions are known for being stout and as long as you know how to drive this should not be a real issue. But when test driving one of these you should be almost driving it like you stole it to see if the transmission's gears are able to handle abuse every now and then.
    I really like the look of these cars, interior and out. Maybe I'm biased and have been around them for about 3 years so that helps. Some people think theyre a bit ugly but it's all in the eye of the beholder.
    So if you buy one, get up to date on maintenance that has probably been neglected and most likely use OEM parts.

      5 month update the car has been pretty reliable the whole summer but I have had problems with the soft suspension in the front cupping the tires and after about 300 laps my front right hub snapped clean off. The car has impeccable brakes and steering but the gearing kills this car. The ratios are very good but the final drive is far too long at 2.88 and it sucks a lot of the speed out of the car. Granted mine is not tuned in any way so im lacking a lot of mid range torque which I will change soon. The car overall has been good and it was a inexpensive way to turn laps. Over the winter I plan to see if I can change my final drive ratio and beef up my front left hub as well. My suspension needs to be changed so I will probably just do shocks shocks springs which will set me back maybe 500 dollars which isn't too bad.

    As a very happy SVT Focus owner, I'd like to make a few comments regarding the points you made. First of all, when Europe was driving the second generation Focus (the blue hatchback in your video, the ST version of which had the inline 5 Volvo engine with around 220 hp), the Americans had to do with the facelifted gen 1 car. However, it is irrelevant to the SVT Focus conversation because during its production here (2002-2004 model year), the Europeans were still driving that very same 1st gen Focus. The second gen started from 2004. The only difference is that in Europe it was named ST170, and I believe it was available there first, and the SVT was introduced to the US market afterwards. So, we never really had a time where the 170 hp SVT Focus had to play the role of the second gen ST (with more hp) because during those years we just didn't have a second gen Focus (unless the 2.3L sedan with slight tune up is to be considered a representation of that). Then, with the 3rd gen everything was sort of leveled out, since the car was available worldwide. Anyway, as for the reliability, you're right about the clutch needing to be replaced (although I attributed mine to grueling NYC stop and go traffic, and considering it still had some life left in it at 80k, I figured it wasn't so bad). The thermostat - now, that's a thing Ford should be ashamed of. I'm still trying to figure out what its designers and engineers were smoking when they figured you can get a plastic housing with a plug at the bottom and a sensor that doesn't get threaded in, but is held in place by a clip instead. No wonder so many SVT owners have gone the route of swapping it out with the Contour thermostat housing (older, more sensible design). At the end of the day, though, it's a budget car, and expecting high end quality parts everywhere would not be fair. Take this car to a twisty mountain road, and all the gripes disappear about the cheap interior and/or lack of noise insulation, and a smile on your face becomes the true indicator of what this car is about :)

    One problem is that these are interference motors, unlike the ZTS, the SVT ZETEC motor has increased compression which means the valves and pistons can touch if the timing belt snaps. If you have a ZETEC you know these engines are hard to kill, the only tiny issue I seen on these is the poor valve cover gasket which needs to be changed every 100k miles or so. In a regular ZETEC you don't need to watch out for destroying your engine when your timing belt snaps. In this SVT ZETEC you do.

No ones gonna leave rear drive muscle for front drive hustle and vice versa. They can be aggravating but like you sad most repairs are inexpensive and if you can follow a youtube tutorial and turn a wrench you can do a lot of the repairs yourself. I've owned a 86 5.0 and a 89 5.0 a 91 Taurus SHO (bitch to work on,but I loved it introduce me to high power front wheel drive). It's a fun car to drive and if it wasn't such a lemon I would really love it but save yourself a load of trouble and get a base model Mk1 Focus with the S3 handling package. You get the suspension from the SVT but not the motor tune which will save you tons of headaches and in 2020 the 170 hp SVT isn't really any more substantial than the 139hp the base Zetec makes anyways for what modern cars make these days. But the handling and the little gokart feel is really fun.
    TL;DR: If somebody puts gun to your head and says buy a SVT Focus or die, let them shoot you.

      @lucasignorello6512 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup, I had a 04 SVT Focus it was a maintenance whore, I've owned the escort GT and ZX2 they are all within .75 seconds of each other, the Mazda powered GT is the best by far for reliability.

    • @Loulovesspeed
      @Loulovesspeed 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@lucasignorello6512 - Well, you either beat the crap out of it, didn't perform normal maintenance or bought it used with many miles on it. I bought mine new and put just under 100,000 miles on it with the only issues being a bad front strut, the non-Ford made stereo and the catalytic converter!

    • @Loulovesspeed
      @Loulovesspeed 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @John Doe - Rule #1 - never buy an 18 year old, 139,000 mile performance car of any make unless you are prepared to spend big money on getting it to run and hold up like it did when new. Sorry, but to me, that is just common sense. Typically, young people buy these and both beat the hell out of them AND don't have them properly serviced! Also, please don't refer to the SVT as a lemon, as that is a term reserved for NEW cars only - bad from the get go due to poor engineering. The SVT Focus was one of the better thought out and engineered cars Ford has made to date! One automotive journalist even said he felt this was the best SVT product Ford has made. I bought mine new - the 73rd one built, in 2002 and put 100,000 very enjoyable miles on it, and I drove it hard on occasion. I didn't torture or abuse it, but drove as it was designed to be driven. Only issues in 100k were a strut needed replacement, the optional 6 disc CD changer crapped out and the catalytic converter went south at 90,000 miles. That's it. I would hardly call that the durability of a lemon!

    Gotta agree w/Ben Presten from 8 Months back. My 2002 SVTF is still on it's original clutch @158000 miles. Original owner of it since 9/17/2002. The major must do on these vehicles is PM (preventative maintenance) mostly in the form of it's Timing Belt replacement. This is part is only an opinion, but most successful timing belt replacement kits specifically are in regards to the timing belt tensioner pulley. Plenty of people swear by DAYCO. Dayco is great as far as the belt and idler pulley are concerned, if you do nothing else buy the ford svt made tensioner pulley.
    It's good that you are trying to enlighten people on these cars from a by gone age. So, I commend you for that. This comment is purely meant to be constructive and by no means am I right about all the things I've said. I can only say that it has been my experience with my 17 yo SVTF.
