I love this. These are the best versions of these songs you will find anywhere, and the dancing is excellent. I didn't pay much attention to the show in the 70s, but I can see now how good it was.
That is so utterly disingenuous. Just say, this is a form of media that we happily performed in the past, cause we thought it was funny, and I totally own it. That would at least be honest.
Thanks so much for uploading this nostalgic TV musical. I'm downloading your series to make a VCD to share with family & friends. Hope to see more of such. BTW ... I'm "almost real Black" but find this TV series makes me proud that "black & white" can come together to bless so MANY LIVES of various shades. Bless you for this series.
Thank you SO much for uploading this fantastic video. I have loved the B&W Minstrels since I was a boy and saw what was probably one of their last shows in Eastbournbe in 1982. Such clever choreography and fantastic musical arrangements. You are a star. I have the CD sets do you? I got them a couple of years ago.
Fantastic. Brings back happy memories. OMG if the PC brigade saw this. Ha ha. Sod them. I loved these shows when I was young. Thank you so much. I have downloaded them to enjoy.
It was produced by the BBC from 1958 to 1978. It was very popular for many years, by the 1970's it was looking dated, viewing numbers were falling and some people thought it was racist, so it was axed.
I remember seeing the black and white minstrel show on the tv as a kid. It wasn't my cuppa tea - but it was liked by my parents' generation. What puzzled me was, when I had black friends - and my dad had black friends and colleagues and we had a wealth of black talent in the UK, why there were never any genuine Afro-Caribbean artistes in this show. It occurs to me now that while there may not have been any racist intent in the performance, the exclusion of blacks was a prime example of the inherent, subconscious racism in the UK at that time. The biggest obscenities in this world are intolerance and racism and I for one do not mourn the demise of the black and white minstrel show!
I too remember the whole family viewing the show weekly... and that was in Trinidad where it was a favourite in the 60's and 70's. Great music knows no PCness. This was an artistic mode and expression. I'd love to see all the shows again... come on BBC!!!
Thank you for uploading this Atlantic1952, it was very helpful and interesting. My mother remembered it from when she was 6 as not being maliciously racist, and being mainly about the singing and dancing, and now I've watched it I can see that that is the obvious appeal of the show. However, the way the entertainment is provided IS racist, because it uses the aesthetic appeal of dark skin and light without employing actual dark skinned people. It reglagates singing and dancing to a parody of black people, I'm sure it could have been continued if they had stopped pretending to be something they weren't. The roots of black face are incredibly racist, it was used to mock and ridicule freed slaves.
I'm lucky, however, as my dad bought all the Minstrel LP records that came out. I inherited them and have them on tape... some day I'll out them on CD... and I listen to various tapes often. This is such great music, and wonderfully performed. Anyone know whether any other B&B Minstrel shows are on TH-cam? Thanks to whoever put this one up.
It's 10 years ago this month that you published this show, and the answer to your question remains the same . "No! No" No!" George Mitchell's Minstrels and The Television Toppers still work for me, though. Happy Anniversary, atlantic1952.
Thanks for the thanks! I'm afraid we will NEVER see these episodes again. I have it on good authority that the BBC have them ALL on tape locked away, too racist for todays Britain, what a pity..
It was a wonderful show for it's era - if only they made music like that now. I would love to own these shows on DVD, they would bring back some great memories. And no, it wasn't racist, it was just a reflection of it's time, and i don't see why a black person should be offended at all - it was just a musical.
THANKS ! When, o when will the shows be released on DVD? It's incredible that anyone could censor this entertaining and harmless show! "Honi soit qui mal i pense"
I've already posted comments on Parts 1 and 5, but hey, I want my moneysworth!! Fantastic entertainment; pity we can only see it now on TH-cam, but thanks to all concerned. So the BBC is worried about racism -- but what's to prevent them for screening the non-blacked series, "Music Music Music"? And that really WAS Music All the Way, with no comedians, some of whom were awful, especially Leslie Crowther who spoilt the B&W family show by his (later) vulgarity.
As a white American I have to say those carictures are deeply offensive. And they would have been to most Americans - outside of the southern US - at that time as well.
Nah. Back in the 90s, American PBS stations used to air that Christmas episode of _Are You Being Served?_ with Mr. Grainger in blackface, and... nobody cared.
Thanks for this, it is a pity that the Minstrels aren't touring any more, I have met the late Les Want, Ted Darling and Bob Hunter.
I love this. These are the best versions of these songs you will find anywhere, and the dancing is excellent. I didn't pay much attention to the show in the 70s, but I can see now how good it was.
As a member of the cast of this show I guarantee that no one in this show was in any way shape or format a racist. It was pure entertainment
I always thought that nobody connected with this fantastic programme intended any sort of offence. Its sad that some see it that way today.
Why were the men blacked up with Afro wigs? Out of interest
Thank you to you and your colleagues for giving pleasure to millions.
That is so utterly disingenuous. Just say, this is a form of media that we happily performed in the past, cause we thought it was funny, and I totally own it. That would at least be honest.
Sure buddy 👍

Thanks for posting this! Suddenly I fully understand the parodies of this show!

they are still memories tinged with racism even if that wasn't the original intent.
I'm sure it wasn't intended to be racist at the time however some see it that way today.

Well... it is a minstrel show.
When was this produced?
Thank you atlantic 1952! FANTASTIC

Offensive, its hard to believe this was shown on TV
we looked forward to this show every sat night on the bbc, pity now, the bbc is run by the far left pc brigade, not a decent show on the tv, anymore.
