First off, the games are in all one timeline. From Persona 1 to Persona 5 Royal. Even the spinoffs are canon. Some spin offs despite being marked as a spinoff to one game (mainly the Arena and Q games) are a combination of the past games characters, meaning you'd need to know both games for that game. Persona 4 Arena and Ultimax are straight up sequels to Persona 3 and Persona 4 Golden, if you're to play Arena. Get the current P4 Arena Ultimax remaster on Switch, PS4, Xbox, or PC. As that has all the games content from the past. Including P4 Arena's story. Persona Q and Q2 are crossover games. Q having P3 and P4 crossing over. While Q2 has the two mentioned before and P5. The Q games are more fanservice games as by the end. In order to keep up the canon of the main games, it was just a dream to the characters that they won't ever remember. As the Q games take place during the events of the main Persona games. In terms of playing which mainline game, Persona 3 Reload for P3. Though you'll probably need to look up "The Answer" after playing since that epilogue content isn't in Reload. For Persona 4, go for Persona 4 Golden. And P5, Go for Persona 5 Royal. Also about the dancing games. The only good one of the three is Persona 4 Dancing, though you have to buy this bundle on PS4 of P3 Dancing and P5 Dancing in order to get P4 Dancing on your PS4. P4 Dancing is canon. Same for P3 and P5 Dancing but like with Q and Q2. It was all just a dream that won't be remembered. And if interested in P1, P2 Innocent Sin, and P2 Eternal Punishment. I'd get the PSP emulator (look up how to set it up) and get those games. For P2 Eternal Punishment you'll need to get an English Text patch (again look up how to do it)
All of the persona games take place within 1 universe and timeline (With 1 alternate universe and a tiny bit of time travel) and every game is canon even the chibi and dancing spinoffs. But 3, 4 and 5 all have their own complete standalone stories and you can play them in any order.
Correction: all persona games from P2EP to P5S are all in the same time line and universe. BUT P1 and P2IS have a separate universe and timeline since in P2IS theres some events that cause the timeline to be "updated".
Eh, the horror elements mostly died out with 3. 1 and 2 especially had a bunch of horror elements since those games were made under the Shin Megami Tensei ethos. From 3 onward the games have largely abandoned their roots as SMT spinoffs in favor of the modern style we see in 3, 4, and 5. 3 is the last game in the Persona series I would even call outwardly dark. Sure 4 and 5 have some dark plot points, but I wouldn't say the games as a whole are anywhere near as dark as 1, 2, and 3.
@@bazz2k_755Compared to Persona 4 and 5 it is the most "Dark" in comparison, especially the social links, but 1 and 2 are the strongest in this regard because the SMT roots.

This is quite funny to watch as a persona fan. They definitely don't make it very easy with the numbering and naming of games. Pretty much each mainline game has a couple spinoff games or at least one remake of the main game. Sometimes a sequel to a spinoff.
I started with Persona 4 Golden personally, you can also start with Persona 5 Royal or Persona 3 Reload just as easily. Each main (numbered) game has it’s own story separate from the others, so start where you want, with which ever one seems most interesting for you. (Note: Do not start with the fighting game or the dancing games as there require prior knowledge of the series to enjoy.)
10:47 nope but the series are set in the same universe iirc Each Persona character focused on a different group of people with persona Persona 3 sees member ( basically a ghost fighter army) Persona 4 detectives Persona 5 phantom thieves
3, 4 and 5 are all stand alone stories. You can play them in any order BUT there are some easter eggs and references you will enjoy more if you play in order
The main Persona games have separate stories but the setting is shared so on rare occasion there'll be a shout out to characters of one of the other games (for example in P5 there are posters of pop idol member of the P4 cast up at the train station proving she's still got her job, and sometimes the tv will mention people that in retrospect are almost certainly characters from previous Persona games), and the Velvet Room and Igor (old man with the long nose) are in every game as support. Sooo yeah. You don't have to play the Persona games in any kind of order though playing them all is advised as well, it helps you build up a better picture of how the stuff in this world works; like for example P4 shows us the most about how the common enemy in all the games, Shadows work, while P5 shows how Shadows can effect people against their will, and P3 shows you other stuff which when viewed all together makes the series even more fascinating
"Some should be sidestories" and puts Kingdom Hearts series as an example...
