    This confirms my suspicions....I just picked up a used leaf blower and put a bit of gas in it, but didn't have any oil on hand. I let it run for two seconds just to make sure it works, and turned it off. I was paranoid that the lack of oil would wreak havoc on the machinery. I'm not used to 2-strokes. Thank you for your demonstration!

    I bought an 02 Suzuki rm250 a couple years ago. The guy sold it to me with straight gas, it wasn’t mixed. Unaware I took it out for a rip and first ride I welded the piston to the cylinder. Had to use an air chisel to get it out. Now I always drain the gas when I get new bikes haha

    Wow! I rebuilt a YZ250 and the cylinder and piston were like this. I knew it was run by previous owner without filter and thought a stone/nut had done this damage. Evidently not this is the exact damage she had. New piston and she's cracking but the cylinder is scored on one side like this. Great video!

  • @devilsoffspring5519
    @devilsoffspring5519 4 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    If you're oblivious enough to run your 2-stroke engine on gas only, with no oil, you might be able to still use it.
    As long as it isn't seized (engine will turn over) then you can use a lot more oil in the gas. If you normally use 50:1 gas/oil mixture, try 20 or 25:1. It will be smoky, but may allow you to keep using your equipment. The extra oil will help to seal the leaky piston rings. Expect fouled spark plugs more often though.
    Or better yet, put oil in the gas like you're supposed to :)

      @@adzlee8897 If "spluttery" at full throttle and no-load is what you're talking about, 2-stroke power equipment such as saws and trimmers are supposed to do that. With no load on the engine (just running the chainsaw or trimmer at full throttle in the air, not sawing wood or trimming weeds) the engine will run very fast and the fuel-air mixture will go rich, causing the engine to "4-stroke", which means it won't fire evenly on every rotation. Perfectly normal--putting a working load on it slows the engine down, and it runs the way it should, firing evenly on every rotation. Pull the saw out of the wood at full throttle, it speeds up and starts 'burbling' again, with excess fuel (rich mixture) protecting the engine from over-revving and destroying itself.
      Clean or replace spark plug, and use the recommended fuel-oil mixture (50:1) and just use the tool normally. Fiddle around with carburetor to suit personal taste :)

    • @devilsoffspring5519
      @devilsoffspring5519 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@adzlee8897 Since you used a bit of oil, then it's possible that the cylinder and piston are salvageable. Replacing the piston rings with new ones and running it in carefully with lots of oil for your first few tanks might very well get it going nearly as good as new.
      If you don't want to dismantle the engine to replace the rings, try running it with more oil, such as a 25:1 or 30:1 mixture instead of the customary 50:1. The extra oil will reduce leakage between the ring and cylinder wall.

    My neighbor came over with his brand new chainsaw, asking if I would help him understand why it stopped running. I went after the usual suspects, but when I took out the spark plug, it looked a bit rusted (it should look slightly wet from residual oil). I asked him if he was mixing oil with the gas and he said no. Apparently, he did put plenty of oil in the oiler, but wasn't aware that you also have to add oil to the gas. I also showed him in the instruction manual where it said that failing to put oil in the gas would void the warranty.
    I checked the compression and it was around 18 psi.
    Unfortunately, I had to give him the bad news that this was pretty much the end of his brand new chain saw. The good news is that he bought a cheap one. The other bad news is that he also bought the extended warranty... which also does not cover failing to mix oil in with the gas.

      The chrome-plated cylinder wall is extremely hard. Done that way for minimum friction and longevity when running with very little oil in the gas (50:1 typically).
      It will survive for a short time with no oil, largely because the engine already had been run on gas that had oil in it, so there was some oil on the cylinder wall already.

    It might work but I think we are taking a risk! My experience goes back to around 1969 with a 'Cyclemaster', a cyclemotor being one of a type that enjoyed a few years popularity in the immediate post-WW2 years.
    In those days, we might sometimes encounter a 2-stroke machine, a kind of hand-operated dispenser that was supposed to provide the correct fuel/oil ratio. Inconvenient as it was, I generally took a gallon can to the petrol(gas) station with the required amount of oil previously added. But, out of laziness I guess, this once I entrusted my motor to the aforemention dispenser. All seemed OK but a mile or two down the road the engine was obviously getting tight and I stopped before it seized. Having wheeled the bike home and added oil, all was well from then on but never trusted the right mix to 'professionals' believing that it was lack of oil on there part that caused the near-seizure!

Ran her full blast for 10 minutes before it died. Had ear protection so I didn't hear anything. wtf I thought. Saw the clear gas sloshing around the half full tank and did one of these 😨. I dumped out the gas, refilled with mixed, primed and she started blowing again like nothing happened.

    Generally speaking, a 2 stroke engine will idle for a very long time just using straight gas providing it was run previously with the correct fuel to oil ratio. It's called oil migration. The gas burns and leaves most of the oil behind which stays in the engine up to a certain RPM then it moves out the exhaust.

      My Yamaha Blaster had a partial meltdown. (Rings seized to piston and a crater in the dome that the overheating sparkplug put there. Luckily it was just a dimple and not a complete melt through of the piston, so no slag or debris in the crankcase. Got away with not having to split and clean the bottom end and only needed a new same size piston and a simple hone. Whole replacement took under an hour. Air cooled two cycles are a breeze. That piston has since resided as an ashtray.
      The meltdown was my fault. I ran my already somewhat lean summer jetting in the winter and the air cooled motor and extra stress were too much. +I put it in that state melted the piston and rendered virtually no compression. It had just enough comp for me to start it wide open throttle and limp it home that way. $50 later she was good as new.

    I had two separate scenarios happen to me about lending equipment out to my father in law whom is new to powerd lawn equipment (relevant to a old old school farmer) and after a brief instruction (assuming he understood the concept) I
    Ient a trimmer I had for about 4 years ran fine
    He brings it back says it won't start
    I try it and the clutch exploded and front seal is burnt! I didn't want to offend him so I just nipped it so thinking this was a learning curve so I got one from a pawn shop and enriched the mixture so no matter how hard he guns it would run at a lower rpm and more fuel/oil means more "cooling" (something I learned in aviation mechanics school) Thinking he gotten the concept after about a year of using powerd lawn equipment I lent him a mediocre blower I had and instructed him on the use even telling him that it uses the same fuel as the trimmer about 2 weeks later He said again it would not start so I checked it out and the starting was stiff but it did not start but the tank seemed empty so I was thinking that he put the wrong fuel by accident ok fine not knowing any better I lent him my nice blower and once again I explained fuel and use as before about 2 weeks later He said it would not start I rolled my eyes and picked it up and opened the fuel tank and there it was strait gas.
    After all offensive purposes:
    he's going electric

    ... It didn't have enough 2 stroke oil, poor thing, the warning light was broken as I found out at that moment. After filling it up though it ran just fine again, I hope I didn't damage it all too much. The engine is from 2003 and has passed 20.000 km on that very trip

    • @CopperCreekCuts
      @CopperCreekCuts  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is no fixing it. If the engine block is scored like in the video, you can replace everything else and it still won't work. It won't create compression. Just buy a new one.

    Are modern 2-stroke engines made so, that the piston is only air pump through crankshaft chamber? You know, so that the combustible fuel is direct injected and the burning process quite lean in most using conditions. Is not these quite ecological and exhaust gases also relatively clean. And maybe greasing of engine with food grade oil, then the fumes are comparable to all kitchen fumes pumped to rural and denser populated areas:)
    And people talk the future is electric. But it must be MADE first. Why not these with hydrogen gas fuel inlet? :D

    Can we mix normal engine oil for 2t oil

    • @briang4470
      @briang4470 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In a pinch you can but it is NOT recommended because regular motor oil will usually separate out of the fuel much faster and the viscosity of motor oil can cause the fuel mixture to become too thick and can alter the tune on the engine and it can cause rapid carbon build up. I have done it before with no failures but just to ensure reliability just buy proper 2 stroke oil.
