    I love the Grammostola rosea (Chilean Rose). I had a female (named Rose, I know, not very original) for 23 years. I had gone away for the weekend and when I got back she had molted in a bad position and couldn't get out all the way and she died. So sad. But she was really awesome.
    She once went 1.5 years without eating. She's always been a picky eater. We once gave her an adult female Rhinoceros beetle (Xyloryctes jamaicensis). She ended up webbing it's back end and tethered it to her burrow entrance. The line was just long enough for the beetle to reach the water. We ended up putting fruits and veggies in for it so it wouldn't die, and Rose just kept it like a dog on a chain. It wasn't until 6 months of not eating anything we gave her that she finally decided to make a meal of her pet. I still have the wing coverings of the beetle with the fang marks in it.
    Just thought I'd share. Here's a video of her at about 20 years old. She was part of a phobia study (about 2 years) that was conducted at the University of Michigan. I was very glad to have her back. th-cam.com/video/_RwoKQs28Kw/w-d-xo.html

      I love fluffy tarantulas

      I used to be like that to. And then one of Dark Dens vid popped up in my recommends and I was hooked from the start. I'm going to get my first Tarantula in the Spring/Summer.
      Side note: Tom Moran is also a wonderful tarantula keeper. And he is a teacher in real life so his vids are always fantastic

    If the fiber is cold it takes forever for it to absorb water. Also if the water is cold it has the same effect. It's best to wait for the fiber to be at room temperature and use warm to hot water for the coconut fiber to absorb it fast and correctly. If one or both are cold (fiber and or water) then you will have to constantly remove the fiber that has absorbed water from the brick as well as break the brick up.
    Also a better mixture would be fiber, peat moss, and dried sphagnum moss. 45% fiber, 45% peat moss, 10% sphagnum moss.

    I've noticed that the coconut fiber substrate can act almost like something hydrophobic when it have lost too much moisture. If this is the reason it could be due to the long storage time (and because of the gradient discoloration we see here, it could be explained by keeping it exposed to the direct sunlight for a long period of time).
    And I've found that it's a good thing to add some water and then microwave the substrate - it helps to saturate the substrate with moisture and to adjust the desired level of moisture it contains. And to kill any possible killable threats that it may include - some substrate boiling won't hurt but may be useful. :)

    I have learned to use warm water and to pour the water on the block, but not a lot at once, and then I pull the block apart a little at a time and it ends up being nice and moist, but not so moist that you can't use it right away. It works great. It's all fluffy and even a tiny bit warmer than just adding water and waiting.

    Im not 100% sure with coco fiber, but I've used sphagnum moss that comes dried up like that and if you use hot water it kind of "activates" and starts absorbing way faster. Most people use boiling water to kill anything living in there. The moss is for carnivorous plants not spiders btw.

    When they twitch after they molt I always imagine their new soft skin must hurt a little, especially if air flows through their hairs.. Like if you've ever ripped a layer of skin off it hurts when the air touches it or water or hot or cold.. Its gotta suck a lil..

    • @carriemullins8535
      @carriemullins8535 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I can't imagine it'd be comfortable, they are sensitive. They draw in a lot of air and increase their blood flow when molting. That's how they grow. The twitching is essentially a burst of blood flow. I find it fascinating.

    • @saggiteightyfour8367
      @saggiteightyfour8367 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I used to work for a company here in the US called Wonder Soil. They sell a variety of natural substrates for many purposes. MOST IMPORTANTLY they create their own dehydrated bricks of coco fiber and soil or one or the other. You can purchase on their website OR on amazon. One large brick can fill up a wheelbarrow. Just thought it was a good option🤷🏽☺. Love you P‼‼😘😍

I have a question- what happened to slow-motion feeding vids? I remember you were so happy about the new camera and lenses and could start filming in slow-mo, but then suddenly stopped. What happened? I would like to see the return of some slow motion videos. And if you ever come to Utah USA, you have a place to stay, and we can go on a tarantula hunt in the desert.

    Between this video and the last upload I have discovered the Dark Den channel and binge-watched probably 15-20 videos! I love the videos! My only problem is that Despacito needs a cameo in EVERY video! lol but seriously I love the content Petko! So glad I found this channel. I kept Uromastyx as a young guy and I'm seriously considering getting my nice sliding glass enclosure out of my parent's attic to buy a starter Tarantula!
    P.S. Don't worry everyone, I'll do my homework and prep the enclosure appropriately before I even think about buying my own Tarantula. But I've already watched the Dark Den beginner guide video, which was like 35 minutes!, so that's gotta be a good start!

    my coco fibre was like that, then i add more hot water(right after it hit boiling temperature), n less water that is in room temperatur. then just stir it with a spatula every after 1 or 2 hour and it should work out. oh yea but before stirring it i use screwdriver(anything hard and has pointy end will do just fine) to break the brick while its dehydrating

  • @one-dd8xy

    Coco fiber can go bad after time that's why it's recommended to get a new bag. But also if it's getting used it can last longer aswell. But I've read that the longest you can have the coco sitting there is 4 years.

    Can’t you use coco fibre that is already prepared. They use it for hydroponics and so is available in bricks like you get or already debricked. It also comes with ph buffer but that is optional for most brands like canna. The only problem I see is that it may cost you more in the long run as a 50litre bag costs me about £10 whereas the bricks are usually a bit cheaper and also weigh less so shipping may be cheaper too. It’s generally not treated with anything unless you get the buffered stuff and I’ve been using it for my snake for a while now with no issues. I tried the bricks once and thought never again lol.

    New entertained subscriber here with question. Growing up with my dad we used to have turantulas (Rose haired, Pink toe, and Cobalt Blue) but now that I'm married my wife doesn't entertain the thought of having one in the house. So my question is, have you raised any wolf spider species? I have been on the "prowl" for one but wondered if you had ever kept one. I'm in the moment of building it's enclosure and am looking for a female in general. Having used to owning turantulas I wasn't sure what to expect from any typical wolf spider. From my experience, they don't hide as much and are "sporty" hunters. But do they live about as long as the turantulas?

    Hey, i need some advise.
    I have an old fish tank that I didn‘t use for long.. maybe a month. I kept a Betta fish in it. It‘s not that big, it fits into a Ikea Kallax. Now I love that Tank. It looks so nice! Does anyone have an idea of what I could put in it? I am afraid to keep tarantulas. Are there any other animals I could put into that Tank? Or wait, can I even use the tank as an enclosure for something else than a fish..

    To viewers- PLEASE DON'T EVER USE "POTTING" SOIL with inverts! It is full of all kinds of things, both natural and synthetic, you don't want your inverts to be exposed to! Now TOPSOIL, which is an entirely different thing can be a safe substrate as long as it is 100% pure virgin topsoil and nothing else. No "cides" (insecticides, herbicides, pesticides, etc.), no fertilizers (neither organic nor synthetic), no perlite, and no amendments or additives of any kind. So again, DO NOT USE "POTTING" SOIL! IT COUKD KILL YOUR INVERTS!

    Put cocoa fiber in a bin to add water instead of leaving it in box and bag. Works much better
